Got the update on gamepass and its even worse than before - even with Raytracing off the game now stuck at around 30fps in both DX11 and DX12 modes. Game stutters awful in DX12 making it unplayable and was still around after 10 minutes too.

I just don't understand so many things about this.

First of all, why in the hell are the Gamepass and Steam versions so different? There isn't a single Gamepass game I've used where the Gamepass release was a completely different version of the game than on other storefronts.

Also, why are the shaders compiling constantly while you are actually playing the game? I've played dozens of Unreal based games and this doesn't happen. Even ones in the exact same 3/4 perspective as this one.

Because that is just the way it works unfortunately, the cost of crossplay and so on, not our descision to make. But now they should be in parity when it comes to features, except whatever differences may lurk under the surface enginewise. And the shaders shouldn't compile constantly (not at all in dx12, and only once for dx11), and it doesn't on any computer we have managed to get our hands on yet. We are trying to replicate it, but so far no luck. Could be something as arcane as The Ascent having way more shaders than your average game, and for some users the shader cache on the driver side gets full and starts to recompile constantly due to being too small. But we don't know yet.

So the Gamepass release is still running on a different engine version than the Steam version?

It seems everyone playing the Gamepass version up to and including this patch is having massive stuttering issues. Whereas from what I hear the Steam version has been fine since release.

I almost want to buy it on Steam just to see if the stuttering is an issue in that version and refund it after checking.

It's not a different "version" per se. But there are differences, which is what happened with raytracing and DLSS. Steam version also has stuttering, but it's a bit hard to sort out the noise, it's not like we have accurate data unfortunately. We also mostly see the ones with issues. But we are working hard on it.

Mine was also a stuttering mess, but it did stop after letting it sit a few minutes. Very smooth now. GP version btw.

with today's win10/xbox patch, i logged into my post game character and received the codex entry for interdimensional calamity, which then gave me the Flatliner achievement (unlock all enemy codex entries).

however, three other achievements remain broken for me:

  • Comprehensive (fill codex) - this one is broken for everyone, because no one on trueachievements has it.
  • Win (Complete all main missions) - this one is broken for me and some others. it is supposed to unlock at the same time you complete the final main mission of the game, for which there is a separate achievement - Something Out there (Complete Project MenShen #2). however, trueachievements currently has 5504 gamers tracked as completing Something Out There and only 3923 for Win. so it looks like it works as intended only about 70% of the time. there are no secret or missable main missions, so there is no explanation for this other than a bug.
  • For both our benefits (complete all side missions). I've completed all 28 side missions, including all 5 casino missions, but my progress tracker says i only have 85% progress.
i'm gonna be pretty upset if they fix the last two achievements but don't make it retroactive.

Well, thanks to you, I did look into why it even took time for the DX12 to stabilise, because it should be instant, and it was indeed an issue from trying to fix DX11 that made DX12 slow down its initial caching. So that will be fixed for the next patch atleast.

Tried running the game after the update and noticed it was running god awful on DX12 (reminded me of trying to run a demanding game on an integrated graphics cards). Went into the settings and noticed that the update turned on all the Ray Tracing settings by default on my GTX 1070 lol. Turned them all off (took a bit of time since all the button inputs for menus was lagging like hell thanks to the RT settings) and of course the performance is significantly better now.

Seems a bit smoother compared to pre-patch, but will have to play some more to see if the stutter is still there or not. I also had an issue before where sometimes when a group of enemies showed up and started attacking, the game would freeze for a couple seconds. Didn't happen every time, so not sure what triggered that and if it's gone now.

Edit: Playing for about 10 minutes walking around the main city and yeah, the stutter is MUCH better now. I do notice a small bit when it seems to be loading a new part of the map on DX12, but switching to DX11 and giving it a few minutes to load the shaders again seemed to eliminate most of the stutter for me. I may restart from the beginning again to get a better comparison to pre-patch, but so far, this seems a lot better to me.

Another 15 gig update just kicked in a few mins ago for me but it's the exact same size as the update I got on the 17th that I forced through the store. Guess I'll know by the version number when it's done.

Edit: Ok version changed. Not sure what it added or fixed though. Going to boot up and check.

Gamepass version is still stuttering like crazy in DX12, even with all the RT settings turned off. Seems worse than before the patch actually.

No DLSS

With DLSS (Quality)

So I can confirm DLSS is now working in the GamePass version.

Glad that the patch is here. Our game-breaking bug got fixed and the game itself runs a whole lot smoother. We haven't encountered any significant bugs after the patch. Xbox version.

Yeah, that is new bug, will be patched out. Stutters goes away after some minutes of waiting instead of instantly like intended.

I wish gamepass had a fps counter like steam. What's the best third party program to do this ?
I recommend you use RTSS (Riva Tuner Statistics Server I think it stands for). It comes bundled with MSI Afterburner and it's the one used in the screenshots above, I believe. It's also the GOAT for locking framerates to 60 with good frame-pacing, from what I know.

I mostly really liked this when it worked but its easily one of the most bug ridden games I've ever played. Constant crashes, disconnections, bugged quests, lost progress, missing hud, broken audio, visual glitches, the whole shebang. The last straw came when despite trying to finish the game three times, it crashed after the end credits on every occasion. Uninstalled but not unenjoyable.

Damn it. I wanted to pause the update and accidentally clicked the X button which completely uninstalled the game.

First time I open the game after the Gamepass patch (PC) the game now is running at 8fps WTF? I have a i7700 and 1080GTX the game was running maxed out at 4k before in DX11.
Checked the settings, settings haven't changed, any ideas? the only weird thing I notice is on fraps is telling me it is running in DX12, I have DX11 selected on my settings, I even made sure by changing it to DX12 and then back to DX11 but fraps still says it is running on DX12.

Did you leave the game running for a few minutes? Check this last page. Not sure if it applies to DX11, though. I had to let my game run/compile a few mins and it's been smooth since.

Welp, I reinstalled my Windows (I had too anyway, been getting a lot of problems with my m.2 SSD so I ripped it out and installed Windows on my new 870EVO) and now The Ascent is working again! Who knew I just had to uninstall my OS.

I tried every trick in the book, I even made a Win10 recovery where I kept my files and reinstalled windows, but nothing, still got hit with the 0x80004005 error. Hopefully with Windows 11 the Store will get a little better.

Will try tonight how it´s running, been playing on Steam the last two days because there it just ... works.

rebooted PC just in case, 5 minutes and counting still 8 fps... fraps still says is running on D3D12 which I don't know if it's normal as I have always had DX11 selected.

I had something like that happen after the patch, but it was because the patch turned on all 3 of the Ray Tracing settings by default (which is a no go on my 1070) so I had to turn off all those settings. If those are already off for you then I'm not sure what the issue is.

Set it to DX12, and then turn off raytracing. On Gamepass the engine doesn't support DX11, unfortunately, which was news to us and why the UI is showing you incorrect information. That should fix it.

Is this ray tracing ON or OFF? I can't click on those buttons to change it BTW

Quick question - do I need to play up to a certain point to activate co-op or can my friend and I start it from the very beginning?

I really don't know where I stand with this game. It's a lot of little things. The setting is amazing. Makes me wanna stick around. The menu text and voiceovers in a tiny box plus heavily synthesized voices mean I have NO idea what anyone is saying. Everything is a slow thousand mile walk away. I have like 5 guns and they are all "fast bullet machine gun" "shotgun" or "pistol". So far the loot and armor has all been fairly boring.
I have played maybe 3 hours worth. I can see the potential but it's just feeling… bland? (So far?)

Keep playing and keep looking out for better items. The skills will come and the game will become more fun.

Thanks. That's the hope. It's a really neat looking game that is drunk with potential but starts rather unengagingly.

has the dev said anything about a text-size patch? I'd love to be able to read stuff.

I'm not sure, I haven't been following the thread that closely but I know there are 1 or 2 of them in here somewhere. Maybe they can help you out.

Still stuttering for me on PC. 3950x and 3080 build, Windows 11. Tried playing for 30 minutes and it was still stuttering hugely no matter what settings I tried (I tried turning on and off DX 12, RT and DLSS settings to no avail). The actual frame rate is quite high for me, around 100fps so that's not the issue. Stutter (big freezes not just small stutter) definitely doesn't disappear for me after a few minutes.

I'm sure the devs can sort this out with enough data and information from players, but it is certainly frustrating. Luckily I have the Series X to play on for now, though the game seemingly has framepacing issues there.

So am I the only one having performance issues?

I'm on a 10700 and a 3080 and at 4k and medium settings (RT off), the framerate is absolutely dreadful. Like 20-30ish dreadful with the frequent drops to single digits when shit explodes.

I'm still facing performance issues with RT On with a 3080 but even then its not as bad as you are stating. Maybe its a bug and RT is actually On without DLSS. That would explain the numbers you are getting. Something is very wrong there.

First off, the game is awesome and I know once the small issues get ironed out it'll be damn near perfect.

I have one question however. I know you all have more important things on your list, but is there any plans to fix the FOV for Ultrawide resolutions? Currently it looks like its just 16:9 zoomed in. A FOV slider would likely suffice as well. Sorry if this has already been asked or addressed.

Looks like you were right. For some reason it wasn't registering when I saved my graphics settings. Apparently it was running with all the RT options ON and DLSS was off. Made a world of a difference switching ray tracing stuff off.
