What on earth is this shit, can't I just watch anime in fucking peace rather than it being co-opted by various bullshit ideologies.
Anime influences how people think and a lot of what anime produces align with the right. You can't escape it. You can ignore it but then folks will wonder why you want to ignore it.

How did this go from discussing left vs right fandom in anime to bashing shows with controversial themes and scenes?

Let's face it. No matter how much we complain or criticize, it's not gonna change most fans' tastes in Goblin Slayer or Shield Hero. We're just better off gushing about shows that actually are progressive.

Remember Bloom into You? Or Lily from Zombieland Saga? Or how about Slime Hero is about creating a fantasy socialist state? Let's talk about that nice good shit.

On the topic of anime, I think the problem for most people is that a lot, and I mean an immense amount have problematic views or moments in them. Hell, there is Japanese media that I personally consider to be masterpieces that have titty fanservice and a whole lot of other arguably worse issues. I would say it's because anime and weeb stuff, in general, has just a completely different culture and background than other media. I could mention countless examples, Ace Attorney has pedophile jokes in it, Persona is incredibly homophobic at times... And that's just games, anime is usually way worse because of the niche appeal there is to shows that appeal to the lonely male crowd.

Maybe I'm just stating obvious stuff, but the point is: People want to defend this stuff because they enjoy 90% of it and don't want to give up on this media. You can't watch half of the seasonal anime lineup without also seein some awful stuff in them. It's frustrating but people don't want to give up on it. The entire anime industry would crash down if they removed these elements.

I think that everyone can relate to this struggle in some way or another. Did someone here drop every piece of media with sexist values on them? Really? Most people don't defend them, they just try to convince themselves they serve an important role to the elements they DO like or just straight up ignore it.

Can't I fucking ignore stuff I don't want to watch now?

Imagine having to virtue signal every time you go into a cinema to watch a completely unrelated movie.

You can definitely ignore that the reference in your avatar is from a show that celebrates nerd assholes tho.

Yeah? I never said in my post ignoring them was the worst response to them. Hell, that's what I do.

The biggest problem here is people defending these elements.

Basing your political identity around consumption is a terrible idea and this just feels like someone getting mad about people joking about anime on the internet.
"No actually anime is COOL AND PROGRESSIVE please take my weird internet culture war seriously!"

Media doesn't exist in a vacuum. Creepy pedo bait waifu animes aren't just harmless fun. Neither is the constant jokey sexual harassment (even when characters don't look like 12 year olds).

Media and its critique have their biases, which comes in the form of political sides too.
