I got a 3DS XL Christmas 2013 and I've beaten the crap out of it, played 400+ hours of at least 4 different games, and it hasn't failed me yet. However the touchscreen is pretty beat up, and the top lid very scratched.
I got a Switch at launch and yet.. over the past couple weeks I've been looking at those Black Friday $99 Super Mario New 3DSes (from a couple years ago). They came with very specific faceplates.
I finally pulled the trigger, and also got my favorite faceplates, used, from this Japanese import website I took a chance on from Google.
I got the system for $110 and it came basically untouched. It had the kid's Mii on there and they played exactly 11 minutes of Lego Avengers. Nothing else. Hoping to keep it really nice just for future compatibility. The Switch is undoubtedly the future, but emulators arent great for playing most 3DS or DS games. It's such a huge library.
It just feels better with the two physical screens, all the controls right there. Such a unique form factor. Maybe a Surface Duo with a JoyCon grip could do it better, but that's a big if.
Anyways, here's my like new New 3DS
And I ordered a mint dock 🥳
