I'm 70 Shines into the 3D All Stars version and besides some bullshit level mechanics, I don't really feel like I've had any problems with the game.

Honestly feels way more responsive than Galaxy. Trying to side flip in Galaxy takes way way way too long and Mario is so much less snappy

Hate to tell ya, but Sunshine always felt this bad. Game has a place in my heart out of nostalgia, but it's by far my least favorite Mario.

It has its moments, but DAMN those FLUDD-less levels make me rage harder than most games ever have.

Goopy Inferno and the stupid chuckster throwing level are two of the worst levels I've ever played in a game.

Finished it for the second time over the weekend though.

EDIT: Not to say I don't still enjoy it, but at times it really does feel that bad. Maybe I'm just still too upset over Pianta Village haha

The thing that makes Goopy Inferno infuriating is that it has to take a solid three minutes to go from the death jingle to starting the section over again.

I finished it 100% when it released because the cost of the game was 1/4 of my monthly salary back then. I didn't like it at all.

Reversing the X/Y orientation on FLUDD made it unplayable for me. I don't even like inversed controls but Nintendo made me used to using FLUDD that way and I cannot retrain my brain no matter how hard I try.

Can the inverted camera be fixed in Dolphin?

From what Ive read you can achieve this with a gecko code on dolphin:

Dolphin is absolutely the way to play now, lower input latency than real hardware, 60FPS widescreen, optional HD texture packs for a real makeover of the games visuals and you can use a real GameCube controller with it so it feels like it should, since the controls in the Switch version are kind of compromised from the lack of analogue triggers

The split water spraying buttons and reversed water aiming both seriously drive me nuts but it otherwise feels exactly how I remember from who knows how many hundreds of hours on the GameCube

From the tiny bit I tried of Sunshine in the collection so far. I felt the control stick movement was a bit more sensitive and felt better on the Cube original. I played the GC one a little before this came out.

It sounds to me like the problem is you directly tried the 60fps game first and then compared them. I'd bet you feel the same if you try Mario 64 after Galaxy. A 30fps game will always feel sluggish with more latency than a 60fps game.

I do agree that this version is horrible, for one reason: they inverted the FLUDD controls, opposite from how they were in the original game. To me this makes the game unplayable.

I was a first time player and I had way more trouble controlling Mario in 64 than I did Sunshine.

Era: Super Mario Sunshine controls like shit.
Also Era: Mario has great handling in 64. Perfect game 10/10.

64 has aged like a can of your favorite soda that is a little bit past the expiration date, so it may be little flatter but it's still delicious.

Galaxy has aged like wine and has only gotten better with age.

Sunshine aged like milk left outside in mid July.

Something as simple as jumping from one platform to another a few feet away is an exercise in frustration
wow, now that you say this, yes, there is some bad input lag. I am constantly just running off ledges because the jump input lags so much. This is coming from someone that beat it 100% on GC back in the day and I don't remember anything like that happening.

don't let 'em dogpile on ya, OP, I didnt even realize it was happening until you pointed it out.

The Sunshine hate is really getting ridiculous. I'm at almost 70 Shines and it's been smooth to play. Did pachinko, lilypads, the watermelon festival, and the controls are fine.

If you want a responsive version of sunshine you gotta play on dolphin with the 60fps mod
I played it like that some years back and quite enjoyed it. The video cutscenes are stuttering for some reason though if you enable the 60fps mod. And the times I had to struggle with the camera were a bit much, but overall it was night and day and I would not have pushed through at 30fps.

I agree OP. I must have had massive nostalgia goggles for this one as I remember enjoying it a lot. Playing it again has been mixed. The camera and the responsiveness take a lot away from the charm I remember. I've hit 40 stars. Not sure I'll make it to the end.

I agree– I don't remember it feeling this terrible at the time, but yeah… it feels super rough now.

Controls are annoying, input lag, dropped frames, 30fps etc. I like actively hate playing it. lol

I found the frame drops in Delfino Plaza quite noticeable and distracting but control and movement wise I didn't really have any issue with the game, no issues with responsiveness either - if anything I found it better to play than 64 but maybe that's just me.

I don't think it's the emulation, it always felt kinda crappy like that. I don't know if it's input lag or just the physics not giving you a last second chance to jump when you're about to run off the edge of a platform.

Man, I feel like I had the opposite problem and Mario felt too twitchy. Barely move the stick and the dude's in danger of dropping off a ledge.

I beat the game and experienced no issues with unresponsiveness whatsoever. Granted I play exclusively in handheld mode, so that might be why.

No problem with the platforming, it's the the stupid objectives & levels that's rent really well platform oriented besides Noki Noki Bay.

absolutely dreadful? Can this site give up hyperbole for one day?

I literally 120-shined it in less than a week, it was WAY easier than I remembered. So many levels I was dreading I was able to do with only a few deaths. Game played REALLY well, Mario moves amazingly.

And yeah, playing them both side by side right now, Sunshine shits on 64. It feels way better

Yup. Nostalgia of blinding. 64 feels like shit today.
This is how I felt after playing 100% for both SM64 and Sunshine in the collection.

Like SM64 is still a better game, but Sunshine just controls far better. Sunshine's primary sin in controls is the lack of long jump.

Sunshine always felt to me like something was off. Worst 3D Mario to me, easily.
