The past decade of games saw the flourishing of the Exploratory Platformer genre after years of being a handheld niche. Games where, to varying degrees, you're placed in a sprawling 2D world with the expectation that you'd explore it, become more powerful and overcome a variety of combat/platforming challenges.

With there being so many teams working in the genre I wanted to take a look and highlight some of the upcoming games in one big alphabetical list. Be they something that's soon to release or early enough in development that all we have are snippets of media to go off of. Figured it'd be fun to have them, well… as many as I'm aware of, all placed together with links so folk can find out the latest on the games regardless of when viewing the thread.

A note: I'm sticking with games that have a 2D perspective just to put some kind of limit on the thread. And yes, the titular term is a messy subject and some of the games below might not fall into your personal view of it, but I tried to at least focus on the games the developers have self-described as being a Metroidvania.

I've really never played that many Metroidvanias. My favorites so far have been Hollow Knight and Salt & Sanctuary, and there's a couple on here that scratch a similar itch for me. Here's hoping for the best!

Although not my favorite genre (I prefer straight up linear platformers), it's still great to see so many interesting looking ones. I knew about most of these but I did add a couple I've never seen before to my wishlist, thanks!

Metroidvanias and Soulslikes are the two genres that if I were going to get tired of, it would have happened by now so I'm glad indies are here to satisfy my endless appetite as I just mainline all of these.

I'm also excited about Touhou Luna Nights and La Mulana 1/2 when they come out for the Switch next year as well (and Metroid 5 of course), so I have a lot of Metroidvania-ing in my future.

man it is absolutely absurd how amazing Ori looks, and when you see how they're seemingly fleshing out combat (which was really weak in Ori 1) it's clear they wanna answer the issues people had with the first game. March can't come soon enough.

If they succeed in improving the combat along with removing the objective markers and making the game less linear and more exploration focused, it could really be something special. I'm definitely excited to check it out

Nice thread! This makes me happy, but also kinda sad... It just feels it's a bit of an oversatured genre now... I'm all for some metroidvania, but it almost feels some diamonds will get lost in the rough... Sorry, I'm trying not to be negative, but it's difficult... These all look amazing otherwise.

I'm glad to see this genre booming lately. I always felt metroidvania games were to basic platformers what stylish action games (DMC) are to scrolling-belt beat-em-ups. They present a bigger scope in which to apply a fundamentally appealing form of moment-to-moment gameplay (punching things and here, platforming).

Back in the heyday of platformers though, by the time SotN expanded Metroid into a broader form, platformers had already fallen out of favor and basically died for a decade or more. The current revival of metroidvania games feels like an evolution we would have seen in the 90s if 2D games had remained very popular.
