No more whitelisting for retail mode at all.

Thanks Nunxz.

As I'm already whitelisted, do you know what this change means:

a) if I delete the apps off my series X can I still reinstall them through the web page?
b) if I get a new series S for another room can I install the apps from scratch through the web page?

I believe the answers are no and no, IF microsoft patches the whitelisting method, which they probably will thanks to that jerk.

If the install gets borked, or the series s/x dies, there is no way to get it on a new console.

As long as MS doesn't patch the method t3 used, you can still use the webpage.

As for the other console, no clue.

Copy the app to an external HDD? You can move and/or copy games and apps. Probably worth copying it as a backup now.

Can anyone please explain or link to an explanation about that "white listing" stuff?
I really don't understand, but I'm planning to buy a Series S mostly for emulation stuff. Can we still emulate games through dev mode?

I'm fairly certain Dev Mode isn't effected, since it's running as a UWP.

Retroarch (and a few other apps) were released on 'retail' (ie the apps sit with your other real games) through a workaround. This was originally done by somebody on discord whitelisting people's Xbox account emails for free, and subsequently for something like $5. Then the apps could be downloaded via a web page link on your Xbox. There will be posts earlier in this thread linking to this.

Dev mode is a different thing entirely and in theory will always be available unless Microsoft get rid of dev mode completely. The downside is it takes about 4 minutes to switch into dev mode on a Series X (although still much better than about 13 minutes I think on the Xbone).

That gif kinda bothers me. Lightning predominantly hits tall pointy objects and there it's hitting the base of a tree at the base of a hill, lol.

Again, until it is patched by MS, yes.

Yes

Thanks! I was worried lol

How is the progress of Retroarch and Cores for UWP? Since the Series S/X came out do we feel it's on the forefront of development?

I'm curious about this, too. I'm so tempted to pick up a Series S as an emulation box for the living room, then probably a Series X for the game room since it will cost so much more to upgrade my PC.

See:

We have made some significant improvements to the UWP (Universal Windows Platform) port that will definitely benefit Xbox users. Reading and writing to files used to be very slow in previous versions. It should be much faster now thanks to some generous improvements by contributor driver1998. We also intend to fix some of the display issues that might be going with certain hardware rendered cores like PCSX2 later on, there are some unfortunate menu rendering bugs right now when that core is running which shouldn't be happening.

We are only providing RetroArch UWP as a stock version on our website that will run on both PC (Windows) and Xbox. We are not affiliated with the distribution of it anywhere else.

Edit: whoops responding to ancieny post

Oh shit pcsx2 retroarch is out? I gotta take a look. Really hoping this gives ps2 emulation the jump it needs to fine tune things.

Been playing Ace Combat 3 translated jp version and everything runs smooth except loading save states crashes retroarch. Anybody has this issue?

Has anyone tried moving the emulation apps over to a series S/X now that the whitelisting is gone? Curious if that is possible with a USB storage transfer.

Is whitelisting and dev mode different? I am thinking of grabbing a series s and curious about maybe eventually messing with the emulation part of it.

Whitelisting is the ability to have access to Retroarch in retail mode but unfortunately it's no longer available to new users. Dev mode is still available and likely will always be available.

Does anyone know of a fix for "Close Content" causing RetroArch to crash back to the Dev Mode screen? I set up some Dreamcast games and it's really nice having them run at 1080 (seems like higher resolutions introduce stretching) with all these filtering options but I basically have to restart the program anytime I want to switch games.

Is this useful to anyone else (maybe an OT)? I prepped it for a pal to understand how to get Retroarch (Retail Mode) working on his Xbox. Considering how overwhelmed I was at first, thought it might be helpful to just break it down step by step. I believe this is correct, but feel free to let me...

Is there a place to get info on the best settings for games? (If not against the rules that is)

Some games don't run too well

I would just join the Discord and ask there, as they seem pretty on the ball and quick to respond? https://discord.gg/ekygrBVy

I know there are a couple of games that are notoriously hard to get running smoothly in places, but I also bet if anyone knows the workarounds, it's them.

Will all the programs/files this needs run off an External HDD.

I have a Series X, and it's pretty much filled with games, but I wouldn't mind experimenting with this provided I could play around with it from an External HDD.

If I was whitelisted before, will I need a new version of retro arch to get any updates? Or just continue to update(assets, etc) within the app itself?

I believe it just updates like any other app. They won't be super frequent, but I've definitely had updates over the past few months.

Once you're in, you're in, no need to get whitelisted again.

On that note, I gave PSP games a try using the PPSSPP app, and holy cow do they look super nice at max res and upscale settings. 3D games like Mega Man Powered Up scale super well.

Only thing I've been trying to find are shaders or settings to help sharpen games with a lot of sprites and text. namely Tactics Ogre and the 2D Final Fantasy ports.
