Wait, by <sexual threat> do they mean "fucked"? Huh, never actually thought of that word as a sexual threat but I guess it technically is.

Imagine what Gamer Culture would be like if this was implemented and enforced.

No longer normalizing treating anonymous children as receptacles for your shit takes.

Come play CSGO, you'll see plenty of it lol

lol it's still not quite the same. Gears of war and cod lobbies were fucking wild. Back in the day on csgo you could voice chat during half time and at the end which was close.

Gears 1 people were just trash talking between every round to the other team.

Halo 2 was rife with slurs and trash talking. MW 2 also....it usually happened when I let that nuke drop....damn I almost miss it.

Halo 3 and Gears of War trash talk in the brief moments before the match started were always a blast.

TBH I don't think it's just gamer culture. I think it's just the internet in general. Gaming got a headstart with those types of attitudes because it moved online relatively early. Now that everyone is on the internet I see similar behaviour from people in all sorts of places. On the internet there's talk like that in sports, celebrity culture, music, politics, etc . . . If fact I think pretty much the online communities that have managed to avoid it are those that have managed to stay small, focused, and dedicated enough. I don't think it's purely the anonymity either, as I see people post like that using their public profiles on social media. I think it's the disconnect that you have when you say those things over a screen verses in person, similar to how people will get agitated at other drivers and say things that they would never say to that person if something similar happened while both were walking or biking.

You should try duos with randoms in Fortnite.

Or solo queue in Apex Legends. I've been told to kill myself a few times, been called both racist and homophobic slurs and had a whole stack of abusive PMs after matches.

However, my favourite is in Call of duty warzone and how the game let's you hear your enemies mic for a few seconds after youve killed them. I've heard some really creative insults in that few seconds.

Honestly I think it's good that they have examples of what is and isn't too far. Stops hyper-political freedom warriors yapping on about free speech as a means to be hateful.

I do find it weird however, that some of the unacceptable examples are essentially just the acceptable ones with a swear word. The threats and discriminatory language I obviously understand, but swear words are naughty???

Xbox Live chat in the COD4 days was certainly something..I think I was called a 'f*gg*t' approximately 100,000 times.

Get instructed. Can't even fathom why you would knock on the door to my house!

Here is a bandage for that abrasion. 🤕

Still miss the wild west days of Cod lobbies before party chat became popular.
On the one hand, I miss the bar atmosphere of it. It was like everybody was ten drinks in and ready to brawl at a moment's notice. Made for a lot of camaraderie. On the other hand, I do NOT miss hearing some of the shit that people used to say. The most vile, hateful shit you've ever heard was tossed around.

Sometimes, people have to know that they're potatoes and that they aim accordingly, kid.

Yeah the amount of "banter" that happened in warmup, half time and end game was insanely toxic.

I understand. Definitely certain things I'm not nostalgic for. I got called the n word almost every other game.
Yeah that's the kind of stuff that has turned me off from online gaming with randoms.

I also don't know if things are much different today. I'm betting a lot of that stuff still exists.

Listening to the MW2 lobbies before the game started was pure gold sometimes. Then there was this guy on Halo: Reach who played porn down the mic.

IMO Halo 2 post-game lobbies were even worse. The game was over so there was the opportunity to vent and gloat. The game also had proximity voice to enemies so the trash talking started in-game. Also levels were goddamn meaningful back then. I know this one case they trolled the opponents so bad they stayed in that post-game lobby for an hour yelling. I guess it takes two to tango.

Halo 2 and Halo 3 were so incredibly toxic, especially playing ranked. But there was just something fun about it lol.

Just like the Warzone death mic. It's absolutely glorious killing someone and hear him scream bloody murder.

Absolutely there was something "fun" about it. Not funny haa haa, but this certain charm and entertainment. They kinda neutered that side of the franchise which is fine I guess since there were always those going too far. And the popularity of party chat did it's own dent on the whole communicating side of things.
