"the weak will parish"

Did he have a "no ragrats" tattoo on his chest, too?

I'm doubly shocked he didn't refuse to resign.

Fuck you got mine is a human problem, not a US citizen problem - in this case a mayor was dumb enough to post his opinions on Twitter so it backfired.

When I lived in Japan, there was a small earthquake that split the street I was in and made it hard to drive out of my culdesac. There was a broken mains pipe and one house was slightly flooded. In sub zero tempratures. It took less than 24 hours for the local council to come in and fix the issue. There was no excuses from them about how the locals are just complaining and they want free stuff.

In my own town there was a broken powerstation relay in 40+ degree heat. People notified the local shire, the problem was resolved without resorting to tantrums about handouts or "Finding another way to stay cool".

I just find it odd that there is this instant aggression to requiring help that affects people.

No; but there is another similar, and more mainstream position that "a few days of discomfort isn't worth regulating the markets" which encapsulates so much of how American capitalism works

Profits before people. The basis of the Covid outbreak also.

Uh, expecting utility providers you pay bills to to do their job is not asking for a handout.

Can we put this fuckhead on an island like Alone but never pick him up? We'll visit him in a year and see what fortunes god has blessed him with.

I like how socialism is now receiving a service from a corporation that you have paid for. Real americans just give corporations money to help the economy with no expectations.

I don't get it.

The phrasing makes it sound like these services are down/busted. Am I reading it wrong?

How is wanting a service you pay for requesting a hand out?

Don't have water or electricity while there is a global pandemic raging on outside? Just figure something out or die, it's your own choice so stop bothering me about it.

I know it might sound harsh but don't take it out of context and stop calling me out on such inhuman opinions even tough it's literally my job to care for you as a citizen, and don't try to stop my family from supporting my opinions.

Like why the fuck would you even entertain the idea of being a civil servant if your outlook on life is some anti-government Ayn Rand fever dream? You want to know what a handout is? Collecting a sizable paycheck as a mayor who puts in zero effort towards executing the most basic duties of his job.

Trash man but let's not throw all of Texas under the bus. There's tons of poor people (many of color!) who are disenfranchised and have nothing to do with electing GOP. Not much of that happening in this thread but I remember it in an earlier one.

What an idiot. Did he think people would cheer him own because he's in a red state? How idiotic!

Trumpism lingers.

It is socialistic to expect a service--gas, water, electric--to be rendered that you pay for on a monthly basis? Do people like this even understand what socialism is or how it is applied in the real world?

But her to have to get fired from her job over things I said out of context is so horrible.

"out of context"

wait what? Is this stuff about his wife in regards to his original post? How is it out of context? He posted it himself.

This is where going too far down the MAGA hole will have you. (Really you don't even have to go that far down)

He was talking about the able bodied who can just get out a giant hamster wheel and provide their own power. Or "think outside the box"??? Like should I go murder someone for a generator? What do you want me to do, Tim?

So was I. I saw the tweet and then went to look up a story and saw the news about the resignation.
As said in his "apology", he had already turned in his resignation before he went on that awful rant. It had nothing to do with people getting mad at him; rather, he made that shitpost because he thought he was free of consequences now that he had resigned. Except if you don't make an announcement you resigned people won't know so ???

As for why he actually resigned, it was probably out of contempt for his own citizens. No reason to believe otherwise at this point.

No one owes you or your family anything

The anger and harassment you have caused my wife and family is so undeserved....my wife was laid off of her job based off the association people gave to her and the business she worked for. She's a very good person and was only defending me! But her to have to get fired from her job over things I said out of context is so horrible.

Trying my best not to be rude here about this, but I heard from an American lady that there is a "I got mine, fuck the rest" mentality that is ingrained in US culture. Specifically just like the "Sink or swim" statement the mayor mentioned. Is this true?

Edit - Thanks for the responses guys.

This is especially prominent in Republicans. There are people who think it's unfair that their taxes go to libraries and schools because they don't use those things. They think any sort of social safety net is terrible and insist people who use them are lazy. Our programs aren't even all that great when compared to other countries, but they think these people deserve to be homeless or dead because they hate taxes.

Seems like a pretty dark mentality. Peoples wellbeing and safety is necessary to keep society going. Lots of people I know who are extremely hard workers have needed to fall back on social saftey nets a few times in their lives due to their houses burning down, losing their jobs, accidents and other problems. I just find it wild that people are basically needing help and the people at the top are turning their backs on them.

I love when these fools say they were quoted out of context and then provide absolutely none of the "context" to which they've referred.

I'm sure he will politely refuse his wife's unemployment benefits since he's opposed to socialism and all

It is, due in large part to a(n over)reaction to the Cold War, as well as preexisting cultural narratives about "rugged individualism", particularly concerning the Old West (which is largely a myth, as those settlers were able to thrive specifically because of strong communal ties) and the idea of the American Dream.
