How is it a pickup? A car's type is dictated by its design. A pickup truck is a specific thing and this ain't it.
I don't think pickup is by it's design. Rather it's by it's utility: flatbed to lug things around and horsepower to hitch wagons and other trailers.

by virtue of it not being a pickup. Trucks have has the same basic shape forever because that is what a pickup is. That Tesla is much closer to an SUV or car.
But like I posted (too slowly)

The overall back end is not that dissimilar from a Chevy avalanche style truck bed with the weird extended side frames.

I, uh, I don't know. I'd be fine with it I think if it didn't slope down from the top all the way to the end of the bed. But 500 mile range is pretty gnarly. Pretty it up and I'd spend 70k on it

US law requires a circular steering wheel at least 13 inches in diameter.

Butterfly wheels are specifically prohibited. The reason being that steering with such a wheel requires an incredibly small lock-to-lock steering diameter, which reduces overall steering resolution. These designs are desirable in things like Formula 1 cars with expert drivers, but are very unsafe for the general populace.

I get it meets the basics of what a truck is. But I still see it as closer to some kind of SUV.

As some have said this does probably better target the market the likes of Jeep currently hold.

That design doesn't look very aerodynamic. Is this design gonna be permanent or will they switch to something more traditional later?

what are you talking about https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pickup_truck

it has a cab, a bed and the capability to haul large loads. just because the sides go up high doesn't mean it isn't a pickup truck.

how is it closer to a sedan or suv?

Might want to read that article you just posted.

A pickup truck or pickup is a light-duty truck having an enclosed cab and an open cargo area with low sides and tailgate.

Japan!
I love it! Then again I've owned 3x MK1 (AW11) MR-2's over the years which is similarly designed.

At 39k if I still lived in the US I may consider it. Just not a truck person at all but like the design.

I hate it, but comments on Twitter and Reddit are all over the place. Maybe in 2 years when this is actually available it is normal.
Oh, totally - I'm sure it's incredibly polarizing. We were just talking today about how she dislikes that concept cars "never look as cool" when they make it to production. If this is the final design, she is all over it.

What a presentation.

Elon sucks as a presenter, they need a new face.

Why would you broke your windows?

The design... With some work on the front they could have had a decent futuristic looking thing. Now it just looks like a car a 4 years old would draw.

With a traditional pickup, you have a nicely accessible area that you can just reach in a grab stuff, but here the only way in is through the tailgate, isn't that a bit of an issue?

I look forward to the day when someone writes a book on the gender politics of electric vehicles, the chapter for this thing will be wild. It's like Tesla was worried that the super-masculine truck guys wouldn't take their electric truck seriously without gasoline so they overcompensated on everything else and dialed the machismo to 11. The super strong steel and glass with live demonstrations that scream "Elon, hold my beer", the Bladerunner symbolism, and then ending with an ATV for good measure.

If they weren't, nobody at Tesla understands the physical properties of Safety Glass.

Because that's how safety glass reacts when you throw a rock at it.

Apparently they didn't, at least not according to this article and the comparison image within.

Unless Tesla Armor Glass wasn't what they were using. I admittedly don't know much about this stuff.
