Dems should spearhead a federal law against this and let the Qanon dipshits argue for the right to marry children. Would be a nice counter to the "groomer" hysteria on the right while accomplishing something worthwhile and long overdue.

Absolutely disgusting.

I'm assuming those states still have age limits on marriage and most of those are teens. For example a 17 year old marring a 19 year old.

It is mostly teens, however, the age gap for teenage girls is fairly high:

Some 96% of the children wed were age 16 or 17, though a few were as young as 10

Further, when girls married, their average spousal age difference was four years, whereas when boys married, their average spousal age difference was less than half that: 1.5 years

A pretty large number would even count as a sex crime under the state's law:

Some 60,000 marriages since 2000 occurred at an age or spousal age difference that should have been considered a sex crime.

McGill University's analysis of Unchained's data found 34,943 to 40,224 marriages since 2000 occurred at an age or with a spousal age difference that should have constituted a sex crime under the relevant state's law. In some 80%, sex became legal within marriage; in the other 20%, sex within the marriage was a crime. Unchained added to the analysis the estimated 23,588 children married in California between 2000 and 2018, all of whom fit in the first category.

Most teens also don't have many rights available to married adults:

A minor who manages to run away from a forced marriage probably has nowhere to go, since Unchained has found that most domestic violence shelters do not accept unaccompanied minors.

Minors who leave home to escape from an abusive spouse or impending forced marriage are typically considered runaways under state law. Police might return them to their homes against their will; in some states, minors can be charged with a status offense for running away.

Perhaps most shockingly, children typically are not allowed to initiate a legal proceeding – such as seeking a protective order or filing for divorce – unless they act through a guardian or other representative, under state law.

I have no doubt they are genuinely trying to pass this, but a part of me thinks this is also to distract from their bill regarding Transgender athletes and school funding.

GOP is prepping for when they ban abortion. Now they can marry that child they raped that had their baby.

It felt gross typing that sentence.

If Democrats had any sense, they would be blasting this all over the place.

They always let Republicans control the narrative.

It's always projection with these clowns. Call Democrats pedophiles while the real pedos are in the mirror.

An actual child predator pictured below just gets to go about his business as if he did nothing wrong.

I did a little "research" on this and was bothered by what I was seeing. It's not necessarily red state or blue state, though red states see more actual marriages. I lost all my links when my last phone died.

I was getting into fights with right wingers about it. They were just up-in-arms about a 9 year old getting married off in Afghanistan. "How could we let this happen?" "Biden is allowing this." "WHY didn't NBC step in?" But they don't know or dont care to know that between 2000-2018 5 girls under the age of 10 were married here in the states. They don't hear about a 5th grader who had to go home from school and change diapers.

And fucking Tennessee is one the worst. 3 separate 10 year old girls married boys 24, 25, and a 31 year old.

I'm reading this

FUCKING HOW!?
Various religions are used as a factor.

This article is kinda burying the lead. The main issue here is that this is an effort to delegitimize gay marriage by creating a secondary class of marriage exclusively for heterosexual couples, which could then be used to allow discrimination or provide unique benefits that those in gay marriage wouldn't get.

The second bit is that they left out age requirements. Maybe on purpose, maybe not, but let's not lose sight here. The whole bill needs to be scrapped. GOP can pretty easily just say "ok we added age requirements, see, we're working with you!!!11!" and pass the super homophobic bill. Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist here but getting outraged over the lack of age requirements primarily may just be playing into their hands.

Doesn't that boil down to the age-old marriage vs. civil unions discussion?

No, it's a different approach.

HB 233 Summary: Removes the requirement that individuals must possess a marriage license prior to a marriage ceremony. Requires the Attorney General to defend local officials in actions brought against them for issuance or failure to issue a marriage license or if represented by private counsel, with defense costs being reimbursed by the state.

Basically allows people to refuse to issue gay marriage licenses by making marriage licenses optional. Full bill here

Unfortunately, child marriage is legal in Blue states as well. Before they say anything, they need to make the legal marriage age as 18.

*Edit* Unless you meant TN Democrats, then yeah I agree.

I don't disagree with you. The anti-LGBT+ is the point.

But the bill actually only effects common law marriage which doesn't require a state issues marriage license.

It's almost a protest law in a way. Almost like saying "We don't need no state license to say we're married. God married us and we live together that's it!"

That's why to me, even as queer person myself, am more looking at the idea of underage common law marriage suddenly being perfectly legal.

There are some really extreme examples I thought of how this could be abused and its sickening.

If I worked in the FBI, I'd want to check that sponsor's phones, tablets, computers for kiddie porn. I wouldn't be surprised if this guy runs some Jesus Camp where they try to "pray the gay away" while creeping on kids.

Fucker.
