I've always wondered, do these people know that they're being deceitful or have they rationalised it somehow and honestly believe they're correct?

He has to know he's a charlatan. I believe some scammers don't think they're doing anything wrong, but this guy went to fucking prison. I don't think even he believes his own bullshit.

It's almost always the former. High profile televangelists / grifters constantly use any recent event to come up with news ways (or recycle old ideas) to increase / maintain their wealth by fleecing their followers. When they do rationalize their behaviour, it's usually to push back any feelings of guilt by convincing themselves that if their followers were going to be scammed by someone it might as well be them doing the scamming.

Some believe and others know they're grifters. Psychics are a really good example of this. Remember the Psychic Friends Network? The one with Miss Cleo (who of course wasn't Jamaican). One of the people that worked there noted that she got the job simply by answering a listing for people that wanted to earn $12 an hour doing readings. She said that she was instructed to keep people on the phone for as long as possible since it was $5 a minute. They were also told to tell people what they wanted to hear in order to make them happy. Those that kept people on the phone the longest would have more calls routed to them. Oh, and they'd call people at home to tell them that Miss Cleo had a new and important message for them, so they needed to call back. But they'd rarely ever get to speak to her. Instead those working there were instructed to tell them that she was on vacation.

This Silver Solution crap is what Bakker initially claimed to be a cure for STDs:

Televangelist Jim Bakker claims his "Silver Solution" STD cure also kills coronavirus
"Totally eliminates it. Kills it. Deactivates it." Side effects may include birth defects, cancer, and reproductive harm.

Televangelist Jim Bakker says that his famous cure for STIs – Silver Solution – will now completely cure the Wuhan coronavirus in 12 hours.

Bakker had "naturopath" Sherrill Sellman on his show on Wednesday, and he asked, "This influenza, that is now circling the globe, you're saying that Silver Solution would be effective?"

"Well, let's say it hasn't been tested on this strain of the coronavirus," Sellman replied, "but it's been testing on other strains of the coronavirus and has been able to eliminate it within 12 hours."

"Totally eliminates it. Kills it. Deactivates it. And then it boosts your immune system, so then you can support the recovery," she said.

For the uninitiated, Silver Solution is a liquid sold on Jim Bakker's website for $115 ("or more," if buyers want to simply give him more money) for 64 fluid ounces. His site claims that it uses "catalytic instead of chemical action" to heal people.

The website is also required by California state law to tell people that Silver Solution has chemicals that "cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm."

In 1987, Jessica Hahn accused Jim Bakker of drugging and raping in a hotel room in 1980 when she was working for him as a church secretary.

"He just believed that everybody should serve him because he was serving God," she told the Charlotte Observer.
Bakker claimed the encounter was consensual.

In 1989, he was convicted on 24 counts relating to fraud stemming from his business practices. He was sentenced to 45 years in prison and served less than five.

NY, Missouri attorneys general order companies to stop promoting alleged coronavirus cures

New York State AG Letitia James and Missouri State AG Eric Schmittordered televangelist Jim Bakker and other companies to stop promoting alleged coronavirus elixirs.
New York's attorney general has ordered a prominent televangelist to stop peddling an alleged coronavirus elixir on his show.
Attorney General Letitia James's office sent a cease-and-desist order to Jim Bakker Tuesday ordering him to stop promoting "Silver Solution" as a remedy for the coronavirus.
During a Feb. 12 episode of the "The Jim Bakker Show," guest Sherrill Sellman claimed that Silver Solution was able to eliminate some strains of the coronavirus.
Asked if the Silver Solution would be effective against the COVID-19 coronavirus, Sellman replied, "Let's say it hasn't been tested on this strain of the coronavirus, but it's been tested on other strains of the coronavirus and it has been able to eliminate it within 12 hours."
--------------------
"Your show's segment may mislead consumers as to the effectiveness of the Silver Solution product in protecting against the current outbreak," the cease-and-desist order said. "Any representation on the Jim Bakker Show that its Silver Solution products are effective at combating and/or treating the 2019 novel coronavirus violates New York law."
The product is available for purchase on the show's website. The attorney general ordered Bakker to stop promoting the product as a coronavirus cure or treatment and to put a disclaimer on its site that says the product hasn't been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
James' office gave Bakker ten days to show that it complied with the order, or face legal action.

Even if it does kill the virus on contact, it lives in your lungs. He should demonstrate that the proper effective way to use his Silver Solution is to literally drown in it

Good...but he should face legal action regardless, not just if he doesn't comply within 10 days.

He's suspended offering Silver Solutions. Still a lot of bullshit in it because he points out that government agencies have said that guest statements on the show give the wrong impressions about what Silver Solutions does, and he completely disagree with the statements being misleading.

this fuckin snake reading one of the most carefully worded legal statements I've ever witnessed.

found a legal wormhole to wriggle through without acknowledging agency, intent or responsibility and still somehow able to insinuate he's right.

So, it looks like this has left them in some pretty bad financial shape and now they're just straight up begging people for money
