I grew up a few towns away from Stone Mountain. I'd always wondered why the bad guys from the Civil War were being honored. Especially the tacky laser shows from my youth, where they would trace the outline, then complete it to show them racing into war with swords drawn to fucking Glory Glory Hallelujah. I for one would LOVE to see it removed. We actually got a half year season pass in January. We just went once before Covid-19. Oh well. The mountain's a fun climb. We also do the Yellow Daisy festival every year, simply to procure artisan meat rubs and pepper jellies.

I think it's a fun little place to visit now and then. I grew up going to Stone Mountain but I'd be okay with them changing the face of the mountain.

With that kind of talent, that's what you decide to carve. Where do I sign up to help fund it's destruction?

nazism isnt illegal here

overt hate speech isn't illegal either
Yup, several "LEGAL" organisations that exist, that have their base in ACTUAL CRIME! Even VIOLENT CRIME! Robberies, lynch mobs, killing, the list goes on and on.

But hey at least they are not "ANTIFA!" so they won't be claimed to be deemed a "terrorist organization".
Which they aren't, they are state sanctioned vigilantes! The state supports them! There is no denying that, either at state level, or at national level.. or BOTH in case of Donald Trump!

Kurt Saxon - Wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Socialist_Liberation_Front (YES REVIVED IN 2017! Those thatsays they weren't EMPOWERED by the Trumpaloompa, are lying to you!)

And it also shows why Wikipedia is not a good source, as they do talk about the assassination of Rockwell, but not about the crimes he comitted with his group of thugs, enabled robberies and the early computer networks he helped set up int eh 1980s (yes that early! Their message boards were already existing long before they went to the internet!). As really Wikipedia has to be "centrist" or you'll get a disputed article and the NAZIs will claim "bias".

These fuckers were all connected!

And that's just the tip of the iceberg, they take new names all the time, and there are many dedicated research groups out there that keep track of them, both in Europe and the USA. Please keep tabs on em so they cannot run free or EVER try get their Criminal psychopathic views into government again! (And yes they are in government now! VOTE!!!)

Yep, blow the shit up. I'm embarrassed to admit I've been there more than once growing up. As I got older and learned of the history surrounding it, I can safely say I never went back.

One of the biggest mistake US made was not dismantle the confederacy and its remnants after winning. They were already paying the plantation owners a shitton of money, should've just put a condition in that they'll dismantle everything in return.

Turn the area infront of it into a slavery/civil war museum which teaches of the horrors and dangers of what this kind of symbol represents - I don't think there's a need to destroy this as it's part of the history, but make it part of the museum. It's amazing it's lasted this long though given what I've just read in this thread and how crazy people have been surrounding it with rallies and things.

Parts Unknown.
Is there a way we could keep it, but turn it into a complete mockery? Maybe have them riding their horses backwards and turn their hats over their hearts into raw uncooked chickens. Add a sassy Satan in the back clapping at them. I'd like to see them humiliated a bit before it is destroyed entirely.

No, no no, no no. You want the M4 Sherman.
How about we just redo the images to Social Justice leaders, you know redo the faces? Change the Uniforms to the clothing these leaders wore at the time?:) To really piss off the NAZIs? Just claim the site, redo all the sculptures to people they hate the most and underneath a big sign "Paid for by George Soros!" even if he didn't pay for them.. just to antagonize them further :P.

OOOH! and the current owner and employees of the part will be forced to watch the process from start to finish, just to hammer it home! :). Also a web broadcast in 4K that everybody can see happen. "Yes, and here we see what used to be the traitor racist Robert E Lee slowly be sculpted into Huey P. Newton, .. Let's watch. " narrated by a commentator that usually does Golf matches :P.

And we should only hire sculptors, climbers and workers that are people of color and preferably LGBTQ+!

Sorry I would reallly wish to nail that point home to them. And no, while I use humor, I'm not joking. I want them to see it happen in a way that will really hurt their sensitive little white feelings.

My father would take us there when I was a kid (maybe 5 years old). Being that young, I had no idea of the history and the real stories behind what it was. I remember the laser show was cool, but you could have a laser show over the top of anything. So yeah, I'm all for getting rid of it.

They could do that today with the laser show. The way it worked when I was a kid is that they would outline the figures with the lasers and then slowly dim the regular lights illuminating the stone. Once the lights were out, the lasers would begin playing back an animation, and it would appear that the stone figures were really moving. Easy enough to make them start tripping over each other or make their heads fall off or whatever.

Yeah I've been to Stone Mountain and it's pretty fucked. Even the street names are all confederate leaders, and the monument itself is just.... creepy as hell.

I really don't care if it's the "largest stone relief" carving or whatever marketing they spout, it should be sand blasted.

Yeah, I went there a bunch growing up. It was fun to climb and see the glass blowing or whatever around it, but the carving's gotta go.

I had no idea what Stone Mountain was when we went to visit it last year on our Appalachian Road-Trip.
Needless to say I was rather bewildered when I actually saw it...

The entire park is a giant memorial to the Confederacy, the KKK, and everything they stand for. It was opened on the centennial of Lincoln's assassination. It's practically a racist Mecca.

From the wiki

Stone Mountain Park officially opened on April 14, 1965 – 100 years to the day after Lincoln's assassination. Four flags of the Confederacy are flown. The Stone Mountain Memorial Lawn "contains...thirteen terraces — one for each Confederate state.... Each terrace flies the flag that the state flew as member of the Confederacy."

Not to mention the KKK were given the rights to host ceremonies there in perpetuity for 50 years until the state got involved and were also heavily involved in its construction and were almost portrayed on the relief.

I would rather it turned back to nature with the bas-relief sandblasted away but its more than just the sculpture.

It's so mindboggling to me, a brazilian, how you guys havent prohibited the KKK yet?

I see them parading around, but this shit should be as illegal as nazism

They are supported by the "freedom of speech" bullshit or something?
Short history lesson: shortly after the conclusion of the Civil War and the freeing of slaves, salty, racist fucks all over the country passed a series of laws.

These laws were made so that they could 'legally' continue to express their racism freely, either by display or actions. Combine that with suppressing the fuck out of the minority vote with over 100 years of terrorism and murder.

These laws were passed over a century ago and unfortunately they are still protected by some of the very same laws today (many of the being canceled out by further constitutional amendments but unfortunately not enough).

I remember all the years that my parents took me to the lasershow at Stone Mountain as a kid, and I never knew a thing about the carvings. Then as I got older and started learning about the Confederacy, Stone Mountain was the first place I said I would never revisit until they get rid of that carving and stop hosting KKK rallies.

Real sickening stuff. And prison investors could made a killing off the Clinton's.
They did, until that doggone rascal Michelle Alexander inspired a generation of activists with The New Jim Crow. IIRC Abuela and Marco Rubio had private prison Corp donors back in their '16 runs, the former had to be shamed out of keeping that money.

Black folks are stuck between obvious and sneaky white supremacists for political leaders.

May I suggest that instead of Sherman, they replace these dipshits with a memorial to John Brown?

At the very least put an even bigger statue of black people at the very top of the rock giving the finger to the losers below.

I often go to the recreation area (hiking, kayaking, etc) but I don't go to the amusement park side that has the carving. I hate having the annual parking pass on my car. I know other people who are in similar situations.

I've just googled it

It's blowing my mind that even nazism is not illegal in the US

alright if thats what you want

What do you mean?

Thanks

I've studied about the Civil War, but only in broad strokes.

This is just insane.

One would imagine that with representations in media such as BlacKKKlansman, Mississipi Burning and etc the KKK would have been banned already, but nope

In one of the photos in the OP, you can see 3 back police officers escorting the huge group of white crowds up the mountain. Wow is all I have to say to that.

It still amazes me that it's called "Stone Mountain". For something like this, it's such a generic name. Like some mountain in a story that doesn't matter at all, there just needs to be a mountain there.

And yes, aim a big enough cannon at it and keep firing until it becomes Landslide Hill.
