Yep. Dems should not let the GOP or their cult base bully them into continuing to pretend that nothing is wrong and no one needs to be held accountable for how they act, what they say & what they allow.
I don't mean to sound like such a doomposter/negative Nancy, but how any of you have any faith left in the system to punish these people is beyond me.

So let's say someone like Ted Cruz is found guilty, prosecuted, and ejected from the senate. What happens to his seat? Does his party replace them? Is there a snap election? Something else?

Biden and the Democrats in Congress need to put away the calls for unity if the curtain is pulled back and there are several elephants standing behind it.

Station Troops at every single state capital, throw these traitors into prison and dare the white supremacy groups to start something. This is the conclusion of a decade or more of absolutely toxic vitriol from one single party, while the other remains civil.

Depends on individual state laws, but generally it's an immediate replacement by the Governor... and generally it triggers a special election.

Use their platform in Congress and conservative media to play the victim and scream about conspiracy theories against them.

This. I can hear my parents now.

"The government has too much power. Look, those socialists are targeting only Republicans! They're taking over and soon all of our rights will be stripped away!"

I know that the last 4 years have worn us all down, and begun to desensitize us in many ways as well. But the severity of what happened last week cannot ever, EVER be overstated. The fate of the country's future was literally in the balance for several hours straight. So yes, I believe that if any real evidence comes to light that any members of congress have aided the insurrectionists in any way they will face consequence. They have to. There is no healing and unity until that happens. And if Trump's army of brainwashed fools continue to piss and moan about their conspiracies and propaganda-induced manias then so be it, that's on them.

Are we as a country going to forever tiptoe around these people, scared to innaction of their irrationality?

I doubt anything more than censure (if even that) happens to anyone in the Senate. I would definitely be surprised if we don't see at least a couple of people in the House removed by the end of this though.

But it's a time for UNITY, we need to come together as ONE country and HEAL as a Nation.
(no hard feelings, right? it wasn't personal, just politics.....)
Hell with some of the shit I've seen Dems let slide under the idea that the "country needs to heal", I've often thought that they really must be fucking with people when they say that shit. But AOC said it best in one of her post-Capitol riot interviews, that healing requires consequence & accountability and not just acknowledging that something bad happened.

I don't mean to sound like such a doomposter/negative Nancy, but how any of you have any faith left in the system to punish these people is beyond me.
I mean it is running on empty but stuff like the Georgia win & the fact that at least a lot of insurrectionists are getting arrested (we'll see about convictions), has given me a few drops of optimism for the future. It's not much but it's something. Exposure may not lead to punishment but even being exposed potentially is some sort of blow to the stability of the GOP that could cascade into more.

I totally agree that all of that should happen, and should enact some change. I just don't think it will because we've seen time and time again that they get away with everything and there IS no accountability from their side.

Fingers crossed but not holding my breath.

Anyway, this place sees enough negativity so I won't belabor the point. Here's hoping though.

I have absolutely zero faith that anyone will face any consequences for this.

Your politicians are bullet proof. Laws mean fuck all at this point.

The president got impeached twice and that did (or will likely do) diddly squat. The rich and powerful never have to pay for what they did, especially with half the country under their spell.

Laws only work if everyone agrees on them, and it's clear these people live in a different reality.
Two things...

One, we have stuff filed on DoJ record that they can't indict a sitting President. This shouldn't be a thing of course, but it's there. There exists no such thing for others in the Federal government. They can be charged like anyone else.

Two, Biden is in power in less than a week. He gets to staff the DoJ. He's not going to give directions to let this stuff slide like Trump and his toadies would. These people chose a really bad time to fuck around.

No judging since I completely understand where you're coming from. The fact that we're even at the point where white supremacists nearly got the chance to kill politicians shows that we're in dire straights in this country.

It is imperative that these fucks are found out and heavily punished. This needs to send a message that our democracy can't be fucked with otherwise they'll just do it again in 2 years.

They're not protected like the president. They can be prosecuted at any time. They can be arrested and thrown in jail like any of the rioters.

The President isn't protected either. Just because chicken shit Mueller didn't indicted the President doesn't mean the President can't be indicted.

Giving the GOP no consequences since the days of Nixon has resulted in all this shit. For the love of God, give them consequences already.

This is like the exact plot of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy down to pulling a retired agent out of obscurity to carry out the investigation. Trump is basically Bill Hayden. Shit goes all the way to the top of the circus.

I'd say go all the way in.
What are they gonna do?
Storm the Capitol and try to kill senators and representatives?
That's literally why we're having this discussion.

I really hope those who are complicit with the insurrection are copped to their crimes. No stone left unturned. You've had it too crazy for too long GOP.

When some of these do go to trial they better do a deep dive on the jury's social media to make sure they aren't supporters of sedition and terrorism. This is gonna be bad if a lot of them walk because the jury buys into their nonsense.

Will it be a jury trial or get to one? I think there will be deals cut for most of them

Should they have waited till after Trump leaves? What if he does a pre-emptive pardon for the traitors when/before he leaves?
I think Trump isn't going to pardon anyone if he can't get a pardon himself. Looks like there's fuck all chance of Trump stepping down so that Pence can pardon him, and allegedly Trump has been advised that a self-pardon would be unwise. Basically, if Trump isn't getting a pardon then he's such a petulant cunt that he probably won't pardon anyone else before he goes.

Guess he might pardon his kids? Then again, maybe not. Maybe just Ivanka?

This doesn't sound like idle talk, and I assume this is to make them shit themselves because it's a good thing in and of itself, and it might push them to incriminate themselves or others.

Or they're just baiting Trump into some pardon bullshit and idk.

I think it's a good thing overall that they're adding gravitas to all of this because it counteracts that collective normative impulse to downplay and rationalize something that was beyond the pale.

There will, of course, be consequences for trying and failing to overthrow the government. I'm sure they all expected Trump to pardon them once he'd seized dictatorial power, but... they failed. Boebert would've giddily pulled the lever on Pence, and all of her fellow Representatives know it.

Come at the king, you'd best not miss.

This Honoré guy seem competent, but I won't get my hopes up just yet. Maybe some scums will get neutralized, and maybe it will be another Mueller Report.

Can't unify the country with these Republican fucks. Censure them. Remove them. Prosecute them. Make being a Republican a Scarlett letter until the party changes or dies. That's my hope at least.
