Afghanistan's president will abdicate in the next few hours after the Taliban entered the city on Sunday, according to Al Arabiya sources. Power will be transferred peacefully without a fight, according to the Afghan interior ministry.
Ali Ahmad Jilali, the US-based academic and former Afghan interior minister, has been tapped to head an interim Afghan administration, according to Reuters diplomatic sources. Clashes between the Afghan army and the Taliban took place in the southern and northern outskirts of the city, although a Taliban spokesperson says the group was instructed not to storm the city, which is the government's last stronghold in the country.
US diplomats were evacuated from the country's embassy by helicopter, and an official said that fewer than 50 staff will remain in the city.

More in the article but wow, some crazy scenes coming out of this situation. An Afghan delegation will meet in Qatar to negotiate with Taliban representatives and discuss a transition of power.

Crazy to think that this war/occupation has spanned my entire adult life and time on online forums, from IGN to the old place to here.

In the end there was no real political will to keep the Taliban out of power, so there was never going to be a lasting US puppet government without the US always having a military presence.

Yup, precisely. 75k Taliban vs 300k ANA with the best gear around. Almost all territory given over without a fight, what is there to fight for in the first place? Absolutely no one except Afghan warlords wanted an American backed government and as you say, it was destined to fail the moment the US began to withdraw.

It's strange. It all feels so inevitable. And people have discussed this inevitability in front of me online and offline for many years. But somehow the imagery here still feels striking.

Taliban isn't like ISIS. They are an isolationist and have zero desire to expand.

vs 300k ANA with the best gear around.

Well, the number is probably false. And the best gear....probably has been offered to the ennemy because of corruption.

"In a quarterly report from July 30, 2020, SIGAR quoted an Afghan government assessment that in Kandahar, Zabul, Helmand and Uruzgan provinces, 50% to 70% of police posts are filled by ghost personnel. The lack of accurate figures further raises questions over the strength of the Afghan forces.

Read more at: https://www.deccanherald.com/intern...-security-for-decades-corruption-1019270.html
SIGAR has expressed serious concerns about the corrosive effects of corruption within the ANDSF (including the existence of ghost soldiers and police); the questionable accuracy of data on the actual strength of the force; the inability of assessment methodologies to account for the influence on combat readiness of intangible factors such as the will to fight"..

Everything just going back to how it was. Just depressing all around. From the pointlessness of the war and occupation to the people who will now suffer under the taliban.

Also kind of eerie to see twitter comments celebrating the overpainting of the advertisements

About as good of an outcome as we could hope for at this point I suppose. There's no point in fighting, everyone knows the US-backed regime is doomed, why bother wasting more lives. Just try to have as smooth a transition as possible and be done with it.

Unfortunately, despite having been humiliated yet again, somehow I doubt the US government will learn its lesson when it comes to foreign wars.

My family was lucky enough to find refuge in neighbouring countries when Taliban was in power, and we found an escape to the west.

I became a teacher and educator here in canada because I wanted to go eventually back home to Afghanistan and start a school and help children, as my childhood was absolutely nonexistent and rife with trauma due to the constant war in my country.

This whole thing has just exhausts me so much, knowing what is going to happen to so many people there. I have zero faith as of right now that Taliban will be different this time around. My heart breaks for everyone. My moms been in tears this entire week as she hasn't been able to visit her family for years back home and now with all of this can't visit for god knows how many more years.

I'll also add, I fully blame the corrupt afghan government for this. The US for sure has a part, but the amount of people I know that basically spent the last decade just funnelling the aid money out of the country and enriching themselves is just astounding. I even have childhood friends who got jobs in the Afghan government and bought lavish homes in Dubai and Saudi Arabia and have already fled. They don't give a damn, because they are multi millionaires now and will live a luxurious life and their children will go to private boarding school, while everyone back home suffers.

Realistically, either the US, China or Russia will be back in Afghanistan in 10 years time after the Taliban commits or harbors a terrorist that commits a major terrorist attack somewhere else.

The Taliban will never move past their 7th century worldview, and as such, the cycle of attacks, bombings and war will continue. What will end this wretched cycle, none of us knows.

Let's hope it stays nonviolent. There's been enough death.

It's the Taliban. Once they're in power, once this peaceful transition is over, there will be plenty of violence. Reports already indicate they're going from house to house, stealing preteen girls and forcing them into marriages, and drawing up lists of all unmarried women in the region to do much the same.

Basically if you aren't fleeing the country now, you're going to wish you had. Especially if you're an unmarried woman, since you'll be nothing but a prize for the loyal Taliban fighters.

Im sure many will be killed - which is the real issue here.

The real question is if/when the Taliban realize running a nation is a hard task and begin to create an organized structure that is stable. That is a possibility, but I do not see this happening after the initial bloodshed and chaos.

Then again, we dont know if there is a deal that China and Russia with the Taliban to avoid such bloodshed.

Also here's the thing. 9/11 was committed by Saudi nationals.

The Taliban never "started bombings in the west".

The whole "war on terror" was about making money for military contractors disguised as a revenge mission, disguised as a "regime change" mission, disguised as a humanitarian mission.

You may want to do some research.

This is tragic, but the last 20 years have shown that military intervention isn't the way to affect change in Afghanistan. I don't have the answers.

They're basically not considered human in any meaningful way beyond the basic needs to maintain life (and even that is suspect in these sorts of power dynamics anyway).

The Taliban isn't in the business of coordinating foreign terrorist attacks. They weren't in 2001 and they aren't now.

And I'm also skeptical that the Taliban is going to be eager to provide safe haven to Bin Laden/ISIL types after doing so in 2001 got their asses overthrown by the U.S.

I think they're going to do everything they can to avoid provoking another foreign intervention so they can terrorize the Afghani population, especially women, without the West getting in their way.

The previous government was bad on women's rights, but it looks like a Scandinavian country in comparison to the Taliban:

Literally non-existent. Educating girls is banned. Women become more or less property.

They're basically not considered human in any meaningful way beyond the basic needs to maintain life (and even that is suspect in these sorts of power dynamics anyway).

the tweet of them painting over billboards of women should clear that up unfortunately

Just read that Wiki page. Fucking hell. Absolutely disgusting. I can't believe something like this can exist.

While it fell faster than I thought, sadly this has been inevitable since Bush lost interst in Afghanistan and wanted to get revenge for Daddy in Iraq.

The levels of systemic corruption that came from us dumping cash into a poor country without accountability meant they never really had a shot.

We need to be offering resettlement to every Afghani that asks for it.

I remember reading something by a soldier there about rifles always needing to be brought because they would basically empty themselves. People would steal them and sell them and according to the soldier, it wasn't even seen badly to do so over there.
