That's what I'm sayin. I came in expecting 80's-90's and to hear that it's "Better than Berseria but doesn't strike the same chord as some of the classics like Vesperia, Symphonia, Abyss etc." Definitely didn't expect to see such high praise for it

Might be just the right thing to counterbalance my playthrough of Horizon: ZD. I'm going in mostly blind too. Now I just need to decide where I'm getting it.

Gamekult (FR) : 9/10

Alphen and his team are obviously not the only ones to dare a revolution. Bandai Namco seemed to be just as determined to make the great comeback of Tales of, and the result is as good as expected, if not better: Tales of Arise is one of the best 3D episodes of the saga, the one that brings out all the quintessence of a 25 years old series, and not only for its particularly clever game system. For once, the scenario maintains a very good tempo most of the time, and the way all the elements fit together, from the smallest mini-game to the interactions between the characters, gives the feeling of a perfectly mastered work. Without particularly shining on a technical level, the game finally benefits from a production resource worthy of its ambitions, which translates into an artistic consistency at all times. It's a pity that a certain form of redundancy sets in, due to a bestiary that is far too recycled to take full advantage of the system. Nevertheless, this is one of the best JRPGs of the last few years.

Yes, I have a question for whoever played it. If I didn't particularly like Tales of Vesperia because it seemed to me that the plot was excessively long, how is this one?

the main game is about 50 hours long according to estimates but honestly from that demo, I think it'll feel much more like a breeze considering how much I like the characters already something that Vesperia took a little longer for me to get behind.

Something like 80-82 would be expected but so far it is surpassed that range. I played Tales games before but never finished them, hopefully this would be my first Tales game that i finish.

Frankly I'm surprised, did not expect a Tales game to review this well. If the worst thing anything can say about it is that it's trope-y and has a weird second-half plot turn, well, welcome to Tales games.

A couple of reviews mention 40 hours, which would be a good chunk less than Vesperia took me

Gamespot has the distinction of being the one mixed review, can't wait for IGN to add to the pile lol

Whoa great reviews!

If I've never played other Tales games can I just jump right into this one?? I kind of want to based on the trailers and now these reviews.

These scores make me feel good.
Hope (and expect) sales to follow through, I think Bamco deserves it.

Tales of Arise - Review | Progress Bar

Tales of Arise is a linear RPG with a painterly art style and combat more akin to a brawler than your standard turn-based combat system.

I gave it 6/10 (not contributing to open or metacritic so don't fret lol). Honestly stunned by how much of an outlier I am with this one. It being 88 on OC is just asburd (imho of course).

The score overall is painfully generic and not at all memorable, to the point where it's a struggle to even know what to write about it. There were several instances where the tone was far too epic for what was happening on screen. I'm just exploring this cute riverside ruin there's no need for the horn section to be going all-out right now. Tales of Arise could definitely have used more chill, ambient tracks.

Sounds like a Sakuraba Tales OST. Shame that Go Shiina is only allowed to score the bad Tales games.

Are there any reviews that talk about performance? I'm wondering if I should get this for PS5 or for my PC.

The games are completely unconnected other than sharing item and ability names kind of like Final Fantasy

I never know who to trust when it comes to RPG reviews.

I'm not writing off specific reviewers, but there's been many occasions where a JRPG gets praised by professional outlets while RPG regulars bring up the flaws later.

I was wondering who people typically listen to for RPG reviews/takes.

I am not sure if i can mention him here ? but acg does. states 2080 ti gets well above 60fps at 4k maxed. 1080ti does the same at 1440p. Pop in remains an issue which was the same on console versions

If you look at the RPG focussed review sites they both gave them 9/10. I'd say that's a pretty good indicator.

PS5 is pretty much silky-smooth 95% of the time. There are a few fights, especially optional ones when the going gets rough and I can see a beefy PC helping out. But it's solid, solid, solid on PS5.
How did you like the story? How would you compare it to other games in the series if you played them?

I think People like Easy Allies and Happy Console Gamer do a good job. More on HCG because most of his reviews are RPG related (if not most). Though I would say the way he reviews games feels like overall on the fly thoughts/opinions and not reading a script. So I suppose there's some genuine feelings there.

Damiani is a pretty big Tales guy so an 8.5 from is great to hear. Will probably pick this up

God damn. So happy to see high scores for this game. It's long past time for Tales to step things up, and it sounds like they've finally done it. Can't wait for Friday.

Loved it overall. It strikes a weird balance I didn't think existed between nuanced themes and more conventional JRPG cliches. I'm not sure if that makes sense on paper. What I'm trying to say is that the folks who are foolishly convinced that Arise is some kind of anti-Tales are going to be seriously surprised, but the folks who fear it's another Tales of Grace in terms of writing (...no offense to anybody who genuinely enjoys Grace's writing...?) should rest assured it won't be.

Excellent! I have a good laptop (RTX 2060, decent SSD), but it's still a laptop so I'll probably go with the PS5 version then.

I've only ever played Phantasia which I loved, I never really liked the shift into 3D combat.

I think I'll give this one a shot though, the reviews look pretty promising.

IMO Arise has the best romance subplot since Tales of the Abyss with Luke and Tear

I guess it's going to be a difference of opinion. See what ACG says about it

Yeah I like Happy Console Gamer, but his off the cuff review style really grates on me, I don't think he's eloquent enough to pull it off. He ends up rambling and repeating himself a lot. But he's the exact target market for this game, so a great review from him is a good sign.

btw, I don't think we link to ACG here anymore.

Excited for this even though every Tales game since Graces has been disappointing in the combat part. Maybe this will be good.
