Seems pretty good so far. I'll agree that I hope they can optimize the pop-in/LOD by release, we'll probably be able to tweak some things on PC if necessary but at least the next gen consoles should be comfortably capable of better than what's shown.

Most interesting thing to me is that while there are some obvious Graces/Zestiria/Berseria influences and various modernized elements, in many ways the game actually seems like it's trying to pick up where Vesperia (and to some extent Xillia) left off. There's a lot of recurring tropes and trappings in the world building and overall game design I'd more closely associate with the Team Symphonia line of games, which isn't really a direction I expected them to go in because...well, it's been 10-13 years and a lot of those people haven't worked on the series in a while. I know Yoshito Higuchi is loosely involved with the game but it's going to be really interesting to see who else is working on it.

Battles look good as well as fields and overall visuals. Main issue is that the pop in is aggressive as hell. Hope that's minimized at least on next gen consoles.

Out of curiosity what similarities to the Team Symphonia games are you seeing? I guess besides the more 'back to basics' combat system.

You can just not notice it anymore, but for me as time goes on it gets more helpful. Playing Zestiria recently, it's helpful to hear "Three become one!" and know a powerful Trinity Arrow is on its way. Hearing "Don't push yourself Lailah!" alerts me that said party member just took a massive hit and needs protecting or swapping out, when I may have been too distracted with the fight in front of me to notice. It's a fast paced as hell action RPG with a camera that doesn't show all your party members at all times, so instant audio cues for what's going on with my party is incredibly useful on a first playthrough on Chaos difficulty.

"Now it's Reyn time" and "I'm really feeling it" got memed to hell in Xenoblade, but those were also useful audio cues indicating the character's special action was partially built up (I forget the exact percentage).

I do just not notice it anymore at some point. Audio cues are more distracting to me than helpful.

Lmao this is so Xenoblade.

I'm kinda hating the visual presentation is this game, bot what I expect from Tales at all. I prefer the Vespers and Graces look.

Normal attack on R1 and only 6 artes , 3 ground 3 air, not even directional input for different artes ?
Meh
Gameplay gonna flop hard

As someone who consider Tales as his one of the favorite franchise in gaming for long long years, I'm seriously happy that the series is finally doing everything right to be a mainstream.

I hope that is at worst some early-game Vesperia thing with facebutton artes. We'd be searching for the most busted artes in a loadout.

What Im saying is Bring Back Artes Ball.

Holy shit the battle theme sounds amazing!? Sakuraba actually doing great work again!?

LIMITER-OFF ACTIVATE

(no seriously his Xillia work shows hes been back in this series)

I know Yoshito Higuchi is loosely involved with the game but it's going to be really interesting to see who else is working on it.

Loosely so, he's as much involved in Scarlet Nexus and Gundam Extreme VS.
For now they made it clear early on that the game was made inhouse supposedly at 100% (Zestiria and Berseria were heavily outsourced, for a Tales that is), what remains to be seen is if some veteran we didn't see in Zestiria/Berseria came back or if it's mostly new blood that's working on it right now (and what happened to poor Yasuhiro Fukuya and if his producer stint is over and he's now back at being QA full time)

Bummer that the full swap-in of Berseria was removed in favor of just an assist attack, but having regular attacks again might make the game a little less spammy. Also interested to see how a fully functional dodge roll will work in a Tales game. Tales generally have pretty sub par enemy moveset designs, so hopefully they try to improve on that front. Healing tied to a global limit should be interesting.

From what I've seen so far:
  • Orange and Pine Gels
  • More traditional (J)RPG equipment system (Team Destiny usually focusing less on raw gear stats and more on equipment traits/skills you're supposed to mix-and-match)
  • Overlimit mechanic
  • Combat roles are less "watered down" and it's much easier to tell who the primary healer, "Black Mage", etc., is.
  • Large number of throwback attacks and spells
  • Goes back to the basic attack -> artes combo formula, though they've made some changes to make it less repetitive
  • Cooking seems to be going back to needing a set of individual ingredients for various recipes
  • Various recurring story elements (Hero gets a super special sword, Elemental energy with some suggestion that Spirits will play a role, etc.)

Mainly a lot of little things that were, or at least came to be, more closely associated with their style of world building and game design. If they show something really blatant, like weapons that get stronger based on enemy kills or maybe the "poorly-drawn wanted poster" gag, then it'll be more obvious what's up, assuming they don't confirm any other staff beforehand.

Watched Arekkz's video and yeah, I'm definitely very excited for this. Combat looks like a blast, the only thing I'm not too sure about so far is those enemy HP pools. I'd like to play on higher difficulties, but if it means that every enemy is a massive damage sponge, I guess I'll go for normal.

The font for damage numbers is giving me some Symphonia nostalgia.

Game looks so beautiful. Love the dual attacks between party members. Can't wait!

Love the look of this, gorgeous art style.

I know it's a small sample size and its a demo, but whilst the combat looks amazing, the enemies look to be mostly punching bags getting styled on. Is that a fair assessment of Tales combat generally?

I haven't played one since Symphonia on Gamecube as a kid. I remember loving it but not much else.

I don't know what is so xenoblade since the combat is completely different from Xenoblade games.....
The combat is obviously completely different, but the Gaur Plain looking area and general creature designs and "big birds flying around in packs that agro on you" encounter design do kind of give me Xenoblade vibes tbh.

And tbh it's not super surprising that they'd have looked to Xenoblade for some design cues given 2's sales and their desire to take Tales in a more "appealing to the rest of the world" direction

Got it. Yeah I don't mind going back to the basic structure of these systems over some of the overcomplicated stuff in the last games (obviously with refinements though).

The game looks so much better than I expected on all fronts, this really looks like the long needed refresh to the franchise to appeal to wider markets and modernize. I'm surprised at how polished and solid all the UI and Menu design is, they've always had good clean styles but I thought they'd fumble there. Combat seems solid and fun, but remains to be seen how it scales late game. The overworld navigation seems fantastic, I'm glad the character can move more freely and the environments blend in well. Hope they use that for interesting dungeon design this time around

Depends on the difficulty you're playing on or what enemies you're fighting. You're still going to be throwing attacks everywhere but don't expect to steamroll everything.

I sure hope you'll be able to use more than 3 skills at a time. Like a button to swap out the skills to another set, or the combo system from Berseria.

Day 1 on PC if it's a good port.
I think the recent ports have all been good, can't remember having any issues with them, so I'm sure this'll be good too.
Out of the 4 games on PC (Zestiria, Berseria, Symphonia, Vesperia DE), only Symphonia came out broken. Symphonia was only a stinker because it was ported 3rd party and said port company did a terrible job. The other ports were released day and date with their console counterparts and have been great.

Don't like how it feels like the game is almost ashamed of being anime. No more cut ins during mystic artes and the menu doesn't show any 2d art of the characters either which more and mor makes it look like the skits won't have 2d art...

Yes this Tales game with more Ufotable animation than ever before is ashamed of being anime

They are probably actually proud of the character models for once and want to show them off.

Yeah, it reminds me of the way Star Ocean 4 was handled for its Western release.

This person always sounds absolutely miserable and bored when narrating those IGN videos, regardless of the game. I wonder why are they still doing it, hearing their voice usually makes me close the video and look for content in another channel.

Things look really fluid in combat, i'm hyped.

Skits are in but the form is unknown. Only thing confirmed to be removed is post battle screens. So no more post battle character interactions, which kinda sucks but not a deal breaker for me personally in any way.
Post battle character interactions are still there, I heard one between kisara and rinwell. The only issue is they aren't like the last 3 games with had character movement, more like pre xillia how old tales games pre battle dialog is where they just talk with no body movement.
