Why is it after three decades JRPG developers still haven't given us a volume slider for "combat speech".

I mean, it has been complained about since the first game ever did it.

Honestly I think it's just pure sadism at this point.

Dang, finally got Law and don't even know how to play as him cause I've already gotten so used to Alphen lol

Definitely gonna need some better artes, at least, and hopefully something that'll let him dodge a bit better or even dodge cancel out of animations since he's such a squishy boy.

edit: also I'm sure it has been mentioned plenty of times already, but the OST is amazing. Really happy they finally let Sakuraba clearly just do what he wants to do.

Wish I could just turn it off.
This game is so t with it. There are times when the characters are having their banter while the combat dialogue is also playing...at the same time.

Just got Rinwell but I feel I don't quite get how her combat works. I didn't try her in the demo and never usually play casters in Tales games I've played, but her mechanics seemed really cool.

I can't seem to get the combo system with the artes to work as described. She just seems to end up casting it immediately.

Hold down the button you used to cast the arte and press r1 or rb to store it

The fog gets lit up by the light, remove the fog and it doesn't happen. That's what you're seeing there.

I don't like the fog in this game as dark edges end up banding through it and look weird.

I see, thanks for all the help... but it's still not over, haha! I gave the lines to a friend and he asked this :

"which of these settings would be for the pencil-lines shader thing? it looks kinda rough in motion with them being more pronounced"

any idea?

Does anyone know if you unlock more difficulties if you keep playing on Hard? I think most games since Graces have done that in some way. Feels like I need a step up on the difficulty already.

I'm enjoying my time quite a bit. Wish the PC port had more bells and whistles, that enemies were a bit less spongy but other than that I'm happy how this turned out. Except for Alphen's hairstyle. I don't even know what that abomination is. Can't get over it.

I bought the DLC and the game feels balanced around having it, at least on hard.

I love the game, but that's a bit gross.

Yea that's just the game. Can't do anything about it. The most you can do is supersample from a higher resolution.

For those playing on Hard mode how are you finding it so far?

I just beat the first boss and it doesn't seem too bad so far. I did notice that Shionne died A LOT though on this battle, so not sure if Hard becomes more of a pain as the game progresses, unless I am playing wrong and I'm supposed to change control of who I use on the fly, I have just been controlling the MC so far. There's also no trophy for completing it on Hard so there's less of an incentive, too.

Also, is that DLC boost to XP, CP, and Gald really worth it or you can manage completely fine playing the game normally without spending hours grinding your crew?

If it was realistic imagine how nasty his face must be after years of not washing it
Absolutely disgusting, bamco how could you not consider the implications of the iron mask
im sure its not tight as he has to breathe from somewhere.

hes probably upside down spider-man'ing the food. we never actually see him eat.
See I thought it was like a little loose but went around his whole face and those two open lines down if (for him to presumably see out of) were the only air systems. So I thought he ate by like mashing food in there and hoping it ended up near his mouth.
Upside down spiderman is a better visual though.

Dang, if these red knights are any indication how the second lord is gonna be... whoo boy

Did y'all change your button configuration? Trying to figure out what's optimal for the Xbox controller.

Switched target and dodge. Dodge being L2/LT felt... bizarre. Other than that, default bindings are fine if you're okay with R1/RB being your regular attack.

Hard feels fine. Only problem I've had is the AI not moving from some aoe attacks that cover almost the entire screen.

There's several skits where you see his mouth flapping at the bottom of the mask, particularly if the angle is from low. He can clearly manage to get food up to his mouth in the mask, but like if his nose itches no yeah he's fucked.

Ahhhhh okay I didn't see any of those skits that makes more sense

additionally, how long has he had this mask on lol. Did the mask grow with him?

That's because some flame specials need to be unlocked in that artes menu. To know if you can use a Flame special, Go to:
Artes
Select an arte
Below the Arte name you'll see something like Flaming edge Rising Phoenix
If it's greyed out it means you haven't unlocked that flaming arte, if it's golden it means you can use the flaming arte
Yeah I figured that out thank you. Now I got most of artes upgraded to use those specials

Jesus, the second lord was a bit much lol. Definitely a big difficulty jump, burned through most of my life bottles.

I thought boost strike was really spammy in the demo, but it feels a lot better here. In the demo things were dying super fast so it was just low HP finisher activations, but so far it feels like it can function like a posture bar from sekiro. If you keep a combo going long enough, you can boost strike when they are 30-40% hp left. Feels really good when it happens in those instances.

I'm not really feeling the new skit style, to be honest. I feel like Berseria was better on this front.

I'm getting some FFXIII vibes with the "dungeons" in this game. They seem different than what you would usually experience in a Tale game.

Or at least the ones I played
Tales dungeons have been like that for a while now, unfortunately. I'm hoping that further into the game we get some dungeons with actual puzzles and branching paths and exploration but.... I'm not holding my breath too much. The days of getting unique puzzle mechanics in every dungeon with the sorcerer's ring are long gone.

Man, not really sure about early Law so far. All of his artes are really long, like min. 2 hits to like frigging 5 or 6 hits long and while throwing constant lightning punches feels good in theory, the fact that you can't cancel out of an arte at all makes him a bit too frustrating to play as right now. This isn't Monster Hunter, I don't want to have to commit to 5+ second long attacks.

Probably gonna switch back to Alphen for now and give Law another try a bit later on when he's got more artes and skills.

Is it worse than the wolf boss difficulty spike vesperia?

Couldn't really say, it's been a looooooooong time since I last played Vesperia. Gut feeling is that this was a bigger spike, but yeah, take that with a grain of salt. But stock up on healing items and maybe get some accessories that resist light/lightning and you'll be a bit more prepared than I was, at least.

I'll be honest, I'm not enjoying this as much as everyone else apparently lol. It just hasn't really wowed me or anything yet, it's solid so far but nothing stands out and I'm not sure what makes this so amazing yet. The last Tales I played was Vesperia on 360 and I was more into that than I am with Arise 3 hours in.

Everything seems solid, good even…but nothing is really pushing it over the top to make me go nuts over it like I see most people gushing about it.

Still enjoying it though, is the consensus that it's still a short JRPG (30-35 hours for main story)?

Is there an owl hidden in the owl forest or is Hootle just reacting to the owls already here?

Also, 14 hours in and I can say I was 10000% right in thinking there would never be enough art slots. Dunno how far I am from getting the second set unlocked but everyone already has 10-16 ground artes and Alphen is the only one with a decent amount of air artes. If there were some over lap it might be a bit more forgivable but as it is anyone being used as a player character is gonna be lacking a shitload of their moveset.

Midgar, With Love
Yeah, head into every big boss with plenty of healing items. I played on Moderate and Hard, so I'm not sure what it's like on Story/Normal. But at least in my case, I never wiped during the main story, but there were some tense moments that would have led to a game over without a full stock.

Did miss something? The second lord dungeon has a locked door and a window with a keyhole. I searched everywhere but didn't find any other keys.

I feel like strategies are one of the few things that are a step down in this game compared to other Tales games, or perhaps I'm just remembering older Tales games wrong. Regardless, I really wish the strategies allowed you to be a little more specific in your set-ups.

I can have Rinwell cast Sharpen on any ally that drops below 75% HP, but I wish I could specify that she only casts in on Alphen (for example) when he meets those prerequisites. Or if a boss suddenly summons adds, I could have my party target the same enemy I'm targeting, or have them specifically use AOE spells. That said, it's also weird that you don't seem to be able to assign other character's artes and skills to your own shortcuts, unless I'm missing the option to do that somehow.

Maybe I haven't tinkered with the strategies enough, but so far it doesn't seem like it's capable of achieving some of the hyper specific stuff I wish my party could do without my manual input.

Wow, y'all weren't kidding about the second lord. On Moderate there was no way I was able to prevent TWO of his mystic artes. The second almost caused a party wipe, I only survived cuz Shionne had the survive on 1 HP skill (and I think it's from a costume DLC, so I would've died otherwise). But it was really fun and high octane.
