Question for long-time Tales fans. Is this the sort of game I'm going to want to play in Japanese? Just going off the English voices from the trailers I've watched, I'd much rather go Japanese, but if it's one of those JRPGs where there's a ton of dialogue in combat and elsewhere that doesn't get subtitled, I might reconsider and just go with the English dub.

Previous games had move shouting in combat but no conversation. There were one-liners here and there but nothing of importance. Arise has small conversations at times, and in the demo there is subtitle to the bottom left, so i'd assume it's there in the full game as well.

I think for Tales is a series with dialogue written in a way where Japanese VO sound a bit more natural.

Now I haven't played a Tales of since Xillia but if I remember there has always been a bit of combat dialogue but mostly them just voicing Artes/attacks nothing ever story related.

Mid-combat conversations are subbed in the bottom left corner of the screen regardless of what language you choose, so just pick what you prefer.

Man, I'm really impressed by the performance. I haven't dipped below 100fps yet, even in towns or combat.

Combat feels real good too, can't wait to open it up more. I think this game is gonna be real special.

Yeah the lowest I've seen is 130 fps at 4k (on a 3080 Ti). I wish the resolution slider was more granular. I could easily do 6k60 if not higher.

I really don't like this trend of games using Steam's buggy and undercooked controller backend with no option to not use it.

It has created nothing but problems in every game that has used it.

Just put in native controller support. Every game can already override native support if people want to use Steam's awful input crap.

The VAs for the two leads are both great.
Yep they are great. I think i have read that Alphen's VA also voiced Noctis in FF15 but so far they don't sound too similar, which is a shame since i loved Noctis. But his performamce here is not bad, just different.

Gotta say the PC version ain't it.

I have only two resolution choices and neither of them is 3840x2160. Something about the game doesn't seem 4K. The reason I say this is when I pick that option, and check FPS, it was saying 120FPS, but the TV settings I have set up for my 4k TV should only allow 60FPS once it is using the 4k mode. If it uses 1440P or lower, it can do 120hz/FPS.

I capped it off to 60 for vertical sync issues.

I have a hard time believing the game is actually running 4k visuals. If it is, then the trailers did a great job making this game look better than it really is at least in the first hour and a half...

Thanks everyone! Japanese it is. :)

Since it's a UE4 game, is there a way on PC to increase the draw distance of shadows as well as objects? The pop in is jarring, as are the shadows basically disappearing further away and drawing as you close in to objects.

There's also this weird thing going on that makes objects in the background look like they were passed through a sharpness filter as high contrast edges will stick out through effects like dust and smoke, I suppose this is more of a renderer issue and can't be fixed with in files.

But would be good to increase the shadow draw distance at the very least.

I'm enjoying all the English voice overs so far. Nothing that is annoying. Maybe because there's no kids or annoying cheerful person so far.

Also I love that it shows Icons for people you already talked to or haven't.

Probably being dumb but right at the start there's two different icons for people when you talk to them. Speech bubble (blue - spoken to) but one with a green exclamation mark in the corner and one with a tick. Originally thought this was that there was more dialogue there a la Dark Souls but they repeat the same lines. What's the distinction? Don't seem to be able to interact with them any more beyond that, but don't want to mise anything.

Green dot is to tell you they have those multi question dialogue you can ask them. That's about it. I thought it was something special when I saw it on the map lol

Huh, weird. I was just getting single lines and no dialogue choice. Then again it was a quick play before heading to bed so I probably missed something. Thanks for the info 👍

A few hours since launch and members of the community already have fixes for the capped frame rate during cutscenes, lack of FOV slider and lack of UltraWide Support:

Haven't tried it myself but seems like it's possible yes

2 hours in and having a blast! This feels like the proper future for Tales but I can't help wondering how it would look with everyone as the chibi Symphonia models haha

This game is freaking good: 5 hours in, one lord down, gameplay starting to click. Loving it.

Looks like once you can opt back into the Steam client beta after you've launched the game with a working controller profile.

Game is so much better when they slowly introduce you to the game mechanics. Also. I see there is air Dodge.

So, PC versions all right?

Edit:
Just read the last couple of posts'. So it's true, controller support is... weird with this game?

I'm running it at 4k/144 on my 5900x/6900xt, with plenty of CPU and GPU utilization to spare. Pop-in or not, that's some great optimization!

I saw a Graces comparison thrown out there for this in terms of combat, how true is that because I really liked Graces F.

it is my second Tales of (Berseria first but didn't finished it, it is pending after I finished this one) and I am loving it.

Like one thing I didn't like back then in Berseria is that I didn't quite understand the combat system but this one is easy enough to understand yet complex enough to be interesting.

I have 3 hours in story (after first "big" event( and the story seems simple but characters are likeable and not so cliche. The game is good visually and music is awesome, I think this is (in my honest opinion) the jump that the franchise need to take to maybe sells more? I don't know.

What I know is this game makes me ibe nterested in others tales of game so that is a victory

The comparisons are not entirely unwarranted. They are certainly different battle systems, but Arise is feeling a lot more free in battle than anything that's come out since Graces, so I'm having a lot of fun.

Only complement right now is that enemy variety seems really limited

Which version to get PS5, XSX or Highend PC?

Playing it currently on the PS5. When I played the demo on XSX it looked noticeably better in terms of resolution. I think Xbox has an upper hand there, but that was from the demo.

Curious to see the comparison video from DF (if they make one).

I just finished up writing an owl guide for RPG Site, so folks who want some aid and haven't already chosen someplace to get it are welcome to check that out. My colleague, Scott, took the screenshots. They're good.

By the way since you've played the game how are the towns? Akin to Dragon Quest XI if you played that or a notch down and less prominent?

Gonna spoiler tag because I'm sure plenty of folks don't want detailed impressions!

They're fine. There's a good number of settlements and they're visually diverse. They reflect the various biomes nicely. Don't expect many open buildings, unfortunately. DQXI is the modern king of bigger-budget JRPG townz.

I've seen people saying that some Arts are locked behind dlc costumes. Does each one have an art? Or is there a list of which ones do and don't?
