The difference indeed is that Ubisoft seemed to push you towards the microtransactions through content bloat, level gating the main story and in-game UI decisions (like having the premium store next to the regular inventory/skill/etc. menus and even some blatantly psychological fuckery, iirc) with the Assassin's Creed games (or at least that's how I remember it being), whereas Tales has very obviously never been actually affected by the dumb DLC at all--the games have easy difficulties and don't encourage grinding in any way, the EXP boosters and whatever have never been mentioned in-game so unless you go LOOK for DLC in the platform storefront, you won't even know they exist, etc.

Like, it really should be pretty obvious to anyone what the difference here is, but I guess we're throwing all semblance of nuance and actual conversation out the window so we can be fucking mad about this. Yall do you lol.

This part. Ubisoft games feel like mobile games with all of the meters and monetization.

These responses are wild and mind-blowing.
People hand-waving this as "It's always been there" as if that makes it okay.

I was so excited to buy this day 1 on launch. Another game that does not respect my time by designing the game around having this trash in-game.
Fuck this game, I'm not touching this till it hits a STEEP discount.

This stuff was never okay when Assassin's creed starting doing it,
It was not okay when Shadow of Mordor started doing it,
It is certainly not okay now either, just because it has "been like this forever".

Ya'll sure love getting loud and bent out of shape when big bad Sony/MS/EA/Nintendo etc do something to charge you extra.
But here it is:
"it ok"
"it small jrpg"
" it niche"

Have some goddamn self-respect and stop getting nickel and dimed in a game you paid full price for.

Sorry I'm not going to get all mad about something that's been in the series since 2008 and is easily avoidable as I have never used them once and I play every tales game.

Self respect? seriously get off your high horse pal

Yeah, it's stupid. Bandai Namco is bad about this and it shouldn't be excused. I love the game, but Namco pls.

Maybe because the people who actually played the games know they're not designed around the MTX.

Like yeah it sucks, but nobody's getting nickel and dimed.

Don't care about this and will blissfully ignore it when I play the game.

Does anyone know, are there unlockable costumes/accessories in the base game too or are they all relegated to DLC?

Wrong, this is very specifically where this type of DLC belongs. Pay to win in a multiplayer game fucking sucks, pay to win in the single player game you bought is not even in the same league, it's literally a fucking cheat toggle.

Paying for a cheat toggle is something tho

Do you want this in your game?
Simple yes or no?

if no, then don't support it.
They don't change, because you give them money and encourage them to do this to you.

Oh please. This type of MTX hurts nothing.

Then again I also don't get bent out of shape when others games do it nor do I feel the need to look down on people who spend their money on this stuff.

I am honestly more fine with "too lazy to unlock this myself, so I'll pay for it DLC" than a ton of exclusive content that is not available to everyone else on day one.

No other Tales game has been designed around it so I don't know where you're getting that from

If it doesn't affect the experience in a negative way (as in you don't have to buy them to have a smooth playthrough), then I'm actually in favor of these kinds of DLCs (helps a lot with accessibility too).

It's all right. It is a series loved by hardcore gamers. If it was a game that was too popular or that younger generations like, then we would have a problem.

You can buy the game and never buy these bullshit boosts which is supporting a good game and not the bullshit paid boosts...

Doesn't bother me any. It's not like they're forcing me to buy it. I may actually acquire some of it depending on the price as I need to have the game finished before Metroid Dread next month.

Well I mean, it's still bad though. MTX doesn't belong any $60 game and still deserves to be called out.

I'm just saying that the game is still perfectly enjoyable and the degree to which they affect the gameplay in Tales games is minimal to the point of easily ignoring for many.

what kind of crusade do some people here think they're pushing lol

just don't buy them if you don't care about it. it's not your place to say whether or not the developer is allowed to have them in. as long as these are optionals and aren't hurting the progression of a normal playthrough, why should you care?

Some of the time saver DLC are just what you'd normally get from the Grade shop at the end of your first playthrough.

Only having to use one of each material for crafting/cooking has been quite a time saver especially when making a ton of noodles for the rare drop boosts.

Even if this is true, I think it shouldn't be encouraged.

This response might be a little much though... Unless they are buying the dlc, you can enjoy the game and not support that practice...

I treat them as sanctioned cheat codes / optional difficulty levels. Not great, and not something I would want to see as DLC (if you're going to include things like exp boost, bake it into a difficulty setting from the menu screen, it shouldn't be monetized), but they have been doing this for a while so it probably won't end. That doesn't mean you shouldn't speak up about it though.

Meh I kinda look at it as being able to buy grade shop bonuses ahead of actually finishing the game for the first time.
I think it's dumb to sell these kinds of things and never end up buying them, but more options for people with money I guess. But from the Tales games I played none of them felt the least bit balanced around exp bonuses, and pretty much every modern Tales game has difficulty settings you can change at any time if you're having too much of a struggle against a boss.

Edit: I will say I'm super pissed about most costumes in the games being for $$$, moreso than the exp dlc. Playing Berseria now and they give you some things like hats, glasses, other accessories free. From what I've seen of the free/nondlc costumes they're mostly silly (normin mascot costumes) or iirc look the same on everyone (the waiter/waitress costumes). Maybe they'll have something cooler late in the game.

If the game could be beaten underleveved with game knowledge and dexterity beating out level stats then I wouldn't care.

I distinctly remember this being impossible with Ubisoft games since there are actual level gating, in the sense that it didnt matter how good you were at the game, if you didn't grind to an arbitrary level, then you weren't getting ahead.

Real mature OP, You surely dont have an an agenda here don't you? Make my eyes roll right out my skull.

So these games are balanced around these MTX not being used?
I won't speak for Arise but yeah pretty much all of these games since 2008 have them and they've never been required.

Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition for example just has all of them in the standard release of the game alongside the DLC costumes.

It might be why I stopped playing Tales games thinking about it.
I certainly don't care about about Arise with some of the designs I've seen.

Pro tip. Video games still haven't money gated difficulty settings yet. Just turn down a bit in ass creed or tales or any game if you struggle or are annoyed. It's not a huge deal!

so you gotta pay up even more for easy mode. that's not okay at all

These games have selectable difficulty modes already. After beating them you get access to a grade shop where you can trade points you've earned during fights for basically the same bonuses (increased exp and money, etc) which are usable during a New Game+. So this DLC is moreso intending to give you access to that the first time you play the game.

Hey give it time.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon tried to gate New Game Plus behind DLC. I don't know if the Japanese release ever backtracked on that, but the Western release never implemented it.

This doesn't particularly bother me but I always loved the implication of extra EXP being sold as DLC.

"Pay more so you don't have to play the game you bought!"

I think every Tales of game I've played has had those boosters available. Fortunately the games are balanced around not buying the boosters, if you do the game gets way too easy.

People are literally saying "its been around forever" so I am taking them at their word.
I have never played a single Tales of game.

Yes, they have been available to buy for some time now, never once in any of the games since 2008 have they balanced the difficulty around forcing people to buy it. Not once. Maybe don't walk into a topic spouting your shit when you admit you have no idea what it is you're even talking about.

Reminds me of the Dead Space 3 microtransactions. Kinda shoddy, but it didn't break my gameplay experience, so I doubt it will for Arise.
