Taking into account the “at the time” factor, is this the greatest most HYPE intro to any game ever?

One of them would have to be Hunter: The Reckoning. I'm big into paranormal shit and this was just so cool. Loved the game too. Bought that shit in B/C
Agreed. This is one of the best. Also Gran Turismo 1 intro is awesome.
This. The first and last time I actually restarted a game immediately to watch the intro again. Mind blowing to someone who had only had Nintendo to that point - nothing wrong with that, but this intro fundamentally changed how I saw the entire medium
I love the confused guy loudly asking "ice climbers??" when they show up.
PSO was the first thing that came to mind for me too. Love that intro.

Super Metroid's intro completely blew my mind back then.
Oh yea! It felt so cinematic and atmospheric to me. First game where I specifically noticed that I like..."atmosphere"!
This is the right answer. I still think it is one of the most hyped intros ever, and not only "For it's time". Even if it is not ageing well.
I remember working in a video game store back when this came out and I had it in the demo ps2 for weeks. That intro alone sold so many copies lol. Kids from the nearby highschool would drop by during recess to watch it.
I believe that hhahuahua. If I was a kid at the store you worked, I would have had the same behavior. I didn't know the franchise at the time and that intro on a store sold the game to me.
While I'm not a fan of Indestructible, this intro got me hyped every time I booted up the game on Xbox 360:

Not sure if this counts as the official intro; but the open cinematics for both Red Alert and Red Alert 2 had me hyped to start each game as fast as I could
Probably the only intro here with a Hollywood music composer for the OST as well. This thing is straight fire.
Also, I had no idea Jennifer Hale was doing VA work in 2001.

I remember watching this so many times in the run up to the release. Definitely up there. Hype!
I didn't properly play SoTC until the bluepoint remaster but have to agree - this intro is one of the best - the music is so damn good and fitting. I remember booting this up a few weeks ago and just leaving the intro on loop; didn't even play the game…
Yeah, that probably had the biggest impact for me.

Just having voice and graphics like that in a home game was impressive, and then that adventuring music kicking in near the end.

I was blown away by that one, too. The running animation and that jumping duel definitely built hype.
GoW3 had the most epic opening at the time. Tbh, I'm not sure there is any game that has managed to surpass it even now.
