Touch screen support: yes

Release Date: 26 NOV 2020

(Steam description)
"The year is 2030. Business is as usual in the isolated research city of Rokumei–that is until several explosions suddenly go off in the nuclear research facility known as "LABO." The city sends in "Sirius," an elite rescue squad, to deal with the situation. But the situation only gets worse when LABO's nuclear reactor melts down, sending the facility into lockdown–with members of Sirius and survivors still trapped inside. With lethal radiation leaking everywhere and not enough anti-radiation medication to last until lockdown lifts, the survivors make more and more grim discoveries. In their struggle for survival, in a deathtrap full of fire and radiation, they learn that doubt is their greatest enemy, and trust their greatest asset.

The story of Root Double features two different protagonists: Watase Kasasagi, a rescue squad captain who has lost his memories in the hours after the incident, and Natsuhiko Tenkawa, a student piecing together the clues in the six days before. The only key to survival lies in the player's hands with the Senses Sympathy System (SSS). Unlike traditional visual novels, Root Double does not have clear cut "choices," but rather, the game uses SSS to allow the player to manipulate the story based purely upon emotion. Your emotions projected upon the characters, particularly your trust in them, shape the progression of the story. Only with effective use of this system and completion of both protagonists' stories can the player piece together the truth and hope to discover a way out of the facility."

Those are some of the most notable releases on the system, in addition to those some titles in Japan haven't been released in the west yet (like Higurashi, Summer Pockets and Dies Irae), and some cool titles are confirmed for the system like The House in Fata Morgana, Anonymos;Code, and Little Busters!

Being a Nintendo system, it is exceeding my expectations in having so many quality visual novels in less than 3 years. I'm playing AI The Somnium Files and after that I'll start reading Raging Loop.

So, what do you think of the visual novels situation on the platform so far? what is your favorite visual novel on Switch? share your memories and experiences!

I love that things have turned out this way for the Switch. Having a new home for VNs (and one that is infinitely more popular than the Vita) is great!

No Danganronpa or Zero Escape is a shame. That would basically make it the premiere VN machine on the planet

Also, 2064: Read Only Memories should be listed. I enjoyed that game a lot and it's always cool to see Western VN's since the large majority of the notable ones are Japanese

zero escape is weird. they could make a faithful port of the actual 999.

danganronpa is even more weird. it's literally money on the table. it makes no sense.

Although not purely a VN, I'm really looking forward to Murder by Numbers, which should be coming out soon.

I was hoping this would be the case -- I discovered VNs on the DS, and am glad Switch is carrying on that particular Nintendo handheld tradition.

The minute you start the game it recommends you fix yourself a drink and get comfy, and it fully delivers on that mood. And the music is incredible, especially heard through headphones. It's the perfect blend of low-stress "gameplay" and intriguing storytelling.

Yep, once the lightbulb went off that the Switch Lite was effectively Vita 2, I dove right in. It's been fantastic.

Planetarian is amazing btw, and only a 4 hour read, very much worth jumping into for an evening or two at the price. I can't think of another game that ever hit me this hard.

Spirit Hunter: Death Mark is also very cool and on sale for like 60% off IIRC. It's closer to an old school adventure game, than a pure VN, in that you have a lot of freedom to move around, explore and solve puzzles.

This may sound a bit odd, but I'm always a little uncomfortable with Phoenix Wright being pegged as a Visual Novel, because from my viewpoint it's got explicit puzzles that are integrated significantly with a linear storyline; in my mind a VN is a branching storyline in a CYOA nature. Even something like 999 - another with extensive puzzling - has the storyline being a branching one (generally hinging on who goes through which door, IIRC, but it's been quite some time since I played it), with the puzzle sequences being self-contained and somewhat removed from the plot.

But then, this may simply be lack of knowledge of the broader scope of the genre.

Whenever Spike Chunsoft finally decides to put out a Danganronpa reboot, it'll be on Vita before it ever gets on Switch.

You should, I definitely recommend.
Music is excellent and the VO (which was patched in for the console release as original was text only iirc) is actually pretty good.

Are those Grisaia games good? Never heard of that.

The first game has a very strong common route (a bit too long though) with strong characterization and fun comedy, the routes are... like usual, some are better than the others. overall I think it is very well worth it if you like slice of life, but I've yet to read the second and third parts.

No Danganronpa or Zero Escape is a shame. That would basically make it the premiere VN machine on the planet

Yeah, I agree. I wish Spike come to their senses and release both series on the system.

Although not purely a VN, I'm really looking forward to Murder by Numbers, which should be coming out soon.

I'm also looking forward to it, it reminds me of those experimental, story-driven DS adventure games, I hope it turns out to be as good!

I really liked it! it may seem slow but the conclusion was very satisfying.

It actually is an adventure game, but for simplifying things lets just consider them visual novels.

I didn't knew Little Buster got a Switch port, and it´s look like it's going to have a English release? Neat.

It seems to me like all Key stuff is transforming to Switch, Summer Pockets was also released in Japan and now I want Rewrite so badly &__& one of my top 3 VNs of all time.

Please remove "Our World is Ended", that game is offensively bad and badly offensive.

I suggest adding some of these instead to showcase the variety of stuff available for people with a knack for story-driven adventure games:

To The Moon
Wheels of Aurelia
The World Next Door
The Shapeshifting Detective (FMV)
NAIRI: Tower of Shirin
Dream Daddy
One-Way Ticket
The Midnight Sanctuary (game is meh, but looks cool at least, and not a shitfest like OWIE)
The Red Strings Club
80 Days
Eliza
Monster Loves You
Lost Phone Stories / A Normal Lost Phone
Neo Cab
Detention
1979 Revolution: Black Friday
2064: Read Only Memories
The Low Road
A Case of Distrust
WILL: A Wonderful World
gone home ("walking simulator")

I bookmarked this post, thank you. =)

Just finished Raging Loop, it was pretty decent. Has some elements I didn't like w/r/t female characters and their treatment but overall it was a nice read. Haven't had a VN I've loved in a good while though, really looking forward to Murder by Numbers and Aviary Attorney

I'm always so thankful when there's no touch screen support. I hate when there's a piece of dust on the screen or something and I can't wipe it off without either making something happen in the game I might now want to, or having to shut it off while I do it.

Oh god, don't get me started. The stuff currently available is hot ass and barely(!) passes as "translated" if at all.
And then I see the UtaPri Re-Releases on the JP shop. And basically the full Otomate back catalog.
And then I try not to cry.......

... there's literally better Otome available on my phone right now than on the Switch US or EU eShop.

Heads up regarding Spirit Hunters: NG on Switch. The game was patched that resolved a significant performance issue with the game. I actually picked it up yesterday after seeing it on sale for $25 (half off) on the eShop. I almost didn't buy it because of the initial performance issues and Nintendo Life's 5/10 review on Metacritic, but when I clicked the Nintendo Life article, it scored a 7/10, with a disclaimer that states they revised the score as the patch addressed the issues.

I had an article about score revisions in the past and this is an example where many would have missed the fact that performance issues were addressed.

Whoa Clannad is getting a physical release? I'll have to keep an eye out for that one.

Also, I'm glad you didn't mention Kotodama. I bought it cheap and it's kinda not worth the effort.

Just a heads up in case you miss out (I didn't know LR was doing Clannad either!), but I believe the JP release is in English..? I'm sure someone can confirm or deny that, but I'm sure I remember reading that was the case - I've been meaning to import a copy for a while.

You shouldn't get If My Heart Had Wings on Switch. The MoeNovel translation is awful. The PC version got a fan retranslation that's much better.

It's slowly replacing my Vita for them. They're perfect for bedtime. Currently playing (reading?) Raging Loop and my next one is gonna be Yu-No.

Are those Grisaia games good? Never heard of that.

They're sone of my favorite VNs. All three are pretty different though. The first is mostly slice of life about a 17 year old guy that was and kind of still is in the military going to high school. It's mostly slice of life comedy that's great due to how much of a wise ass juicy Yuuji is, though it gets pretty intense during the climax of routes with some really good payoffs. The second's main part is mainly a flashback of the protagonists time in the military so it's quite a bit more serious and story oriented though it also has a lot of lighthearted moments. The main part of the third is somewhere between the two in terms of tone and atmosphere, though chronologically last.

Basically with vita not getting anymore, they are just moving to switch even getting ports to it. Which works for me, since everyone loves switch they are more likely to put even more VN on it.
