What are some sound effects in video games that just feel so satisfying every time you hear them? The clicking confirmation noise of a successfully captured Pokemon springs to mind immediately for me. A weirder one: the dazzlingly hot crystal-shattering... something-or-other... sound effect that plays when a new game is selected on Final Fantasy VIII's menu screen.

Another classic example is the "item get" jingle in the Zelda franchise. And I can think of plenty more. But I want to hear from y'all. Sound off!

Destiny is full of extremely satisfying sounds. A weird one is the "beep" that signified a pvp kill.

Dota 2 has loads of extremely satisfying sounds. The best is probably the little jingle of coins from getting a last hit, even better if it's a deny. But there's nothing like dropping a nice Sanity's Eclipse and kill/seriously damage 4 or 5 of the other team.

The little sound when you get a headshot in Gears of War; that little pop sound is just perfect.

Happens exactly once in the first Luigi's Mansion and it only lasts like a second but the little jingle when you finish the tutorial is pretty cool with all the fireworks and everything.

Metroid tune that plays when you get an upgrade.
Same for Zelda when you get something good out of a treasure chest
Final Fantasy victory fanfare
Bloodborne stun noise
Horizon Zero Dawn noise when you knock a piece of armor off a robot

Marths sounds from ssbm ie. tipper and spike. Earthbound or Fire Emblem's critical hit sound effect.
Basically Fire Emblem has good sound effects.

Also kind of fucked up to say, but headshots in CS 1.6

For whatever reason I always really liked the sound effect of Virus/Bio in FF2/FFIV. I don't know of a way to rip specific sound effects from games though and I don't think you can cut the music out while playing, or I'd have put it on my phone ages ago.

I don't know if this makes me a sadist but I love the guardian battle theme in BOTW. Especially the opening little bit.

I tried finding a certain sound effect from Umineko but inadvertently ran into possible spoilers, so I'm not gonna dig for it. But it's the sound of a certain stake-like instrument bouncing around before reaching its target, followed by a mischievous laugh :3c

I'm a huge fan of the SID chip, so naturally biased towards C64 stuff here. One of the things that elevated the C64 conversion of Head over Heels vs Speccy is all the little ditties and effects that were added. It's surprising how much it added to the experience.

More recently I adored Link's Awakening sound effects. The plink of the shield blocking attacks and the patter of Link's tiny feet as he charges had me blocking and sprinting just for the sake of it. Currently playing Luigi's Mansion 3 and it's having a similar effect making me do silly stuff just to hear the sounds.

The little sound when you open up the save menu in Star Ocean games is one of my all time favorite noises ever, and I wish I could find a clean rip of it to use as a text tone.

The most satisfying sound after all the grinding, as well as being the source of the "ding level _" phrase people still use I believe:

Always loved this jingle/sound effect in the first Assassin's Creed. Wish they kept it:

I second the metallic stun noise in Bloodborne.

The THWACK of hitting someone with a metal pipe in Bare Knuckle/Streets of Rage 2. This is the only right answer if you are above a certain age.

Final Fantasy 7's menu sound effects. I absolutely love those bleeps.

Yup, so many of Half-life's sounds are burned into my brain.

I remember when I first played Black Mesa and I was instantly turned off bhu some of the sound effect changes they made like that alien dog enemy that charges up a sonar blast. It sounded completely different and I hated it.

Unsurpringly there was already a mod that returned the original sound effect back into the game. :D
