They got balance changes out of the way a few weeks ago, the new character doesn't need to come with them.

Naw, the title is still pretty spot on if Dragon Quest character didn't reveal today. People are going to get tired of Dragon Quest discussions on path of upcoming character #3 (or never).
There's evidence they were trying to fix the replays breaking, though did not quite manage it yet. More interestingly, there's the "3.1.0 is actually 4.0.0-beta-1" theory, mostly pushed because of the now denied tournament theory, but still technically possible to corporealize.
I feel pretty confident in that but i also feel confident it won't be Erdrick
To explain
Some replays from 3.0.1 work fine, even with balance changes. For example, an old Pichu vs Pichu match from 3.0.1 will still have 3.0.1's proper values and not desync or crash. But not all replays. A 3.0.1 replay with Isabelle in it will crash as soon as Isabelle uses her side special.
So it seems like not breaking replays is being worked on, but isn't quite ready to go.
