That's the thing though, I don't know think it would be in a similar state. The biggest problem with the demo is it lacks polish and that will get added later. The gameplay is actually competent, the visuals could be improved but the big problem is with the characters and story they chose which I don't think will get altered at all.

This is my fear, the problem is that they have big guns at the helm, Nomura and Nomija, who's going to tell them "hey guys, according to our data people think Jack and his friend suck and the writing is shit", can you do some change?"

On the other hand they must be aware of the reception, Nomura himself said he watched people's reaction to the FFVII remake trailers, so I'm sure he knows, even JP is making fun of the characters.

I have some undoubtedly stupid questions about the demo

1) I keep hearing people talking about performance mode, but are there actually different modes on the demo? I just can't find the option to switch, optimization is greyed out for me

2) Do advanced jobs keep the passive bonuses from the base job? Is there a reason to equip the base job if I have the advanced one unlocked?

3) At some point I had magician (with black mage unlocked but not equipped) and swordsman equipped and weirdly enough I was getting job points for three jobs (magician, black mage and swordman). I can never replicate this, as far as I know only jobs equipped level up, but it was super weird that for a time I was leveling up three jobs and I don't know how I did it.

Demo was fine. As expected, all dialogue is terrible. Combat is pretty fun.

The most surprising thing to me was the music. It just didn't sound like Final Fantasy to me. It's not bad, but not really what I want for this game.

There's no difference, the resolution mode makes the hud 4K and that's all according to this:

I'm not sure about 2 & 3, but I saw the you can get MP if you try to charge it in the base mage job, anyway they'll probably change these later.

Some equipment gives growth rate to specific jobs. You may have had a piece on that granted a bonus for an unequipped job?

Classes remain relevant because of their abilities. For example, one of the main reasons to keep playing mage instead of black mage is that you regain the mp needed to cast a spell while casting but only when you are a mage. This makes the class more appealing than the job. Black mage instead forces you to get close and whack at mobs with your mace, which can be very dangerous with your weak armor.

I'm pretty bad at Souls games and it took me forever to beat the boss on normal. That Ice Sword string is ridiculous with how much damage it does, both health and stamina, and its tracking and AOE.

Not a great demo overall. The combat is overwhelming, with systems on systems that honestly don't seem to actually improve or change the core loop. Too much crappy loot. Mobs have maybe just a little bit too much health. And that's not even getting into the visuals, setting, and story.

There are so many Souls and Souls-like nowadays that I don't know what this brings to the table besides a FF skin. If I wanted to play a Souls game, I'd play any one of the 4 available or Sekiro or Ni-Oh. I'm just not sure who this is for.

I'm just not sure who this is for.
Fans of all those games you listed but want one in a Final Fantasy-ish skin instead.

I personally enjoyed it and especially enjoyed the challenge of the final boss even in the demo, but I can see a bit of fat in the current systems that need to be trimmed and the regular mobs do need to be tuned a bit.

Just tried the Demo, and got a question really…

How in the world was this greenlit!?! The game is awful, with combat being the only redeeming part of it.

Just beat Garland. Very fun demo overall, but the visuals and framerate need work. Fair enough though with it being an alpha and all. Loved the combat and job system.

Tonight I killed Chaos, and you know what? I thought it was a really good fight. If they can improve literally every other aspect of the game, they might have... something.

Edit: On weapon types from the Famitsu interview:

Inoue said:
There are eight types of weapons in all. Weapons that have not appeared in the trial version are one-handed swords, two-handed axes, melee, daggers, and dual swords.

- Is it possible to use magic only with a one-handed mace?

Inoue: No, you can use magic with a one-handed sword. It may be helpful to imagine jobs such as Knight and Red Mage.

I enjoyed the demo a lot. It's ugly as sin and I have no love for the characters. But the Soul Shield mechanic is pretty slick and feels almost as snappy as you hope, I really like the Black Magic ability and the spell wheel/channel times you have to work with, and they got the Dragoon Jump down real nice. All the Spear attacks feel pretty good too.

Warrior's a dud, though. It really wants to do the Monster Hunter Greatsword charge mechanic, but it doesn't want to commit all the way for whatever reason. Let me cancel every swing into a charge swing, damn it.

Elaborate on how the game is awful.
Don't really feel like elaborating, the way i see the game has already been shared multiple times in this thread by other users.
At the end of the day it's my opinion, so if you like it more power to you.
The game is bad except for the part where it's good? Of course it was greenlit.
IMO the game is really bad and I wasn't complimenting the combat, I meant it as it's service and not garbage like the rest of the game.

Trial extended until the 26th. Would a mod be so kind as to change the date in the thread title?

According to Nomura's comments, it seems this is an isekai. These characters were pulled into the world of Final Fantasy I.

The game literally feels like a proof of concept demo. Why would they release this?

ps3 tier texture quality with Nioh combat.

To get feedback on the game and change / improve parts, like Team Ninja has done with both Nioh games or like Square has done with pretty much every FF demo.

Played through the demo, got strong Code Vein vibes: great gameplay, ugly everything else.

Seriously, what is it with Soulsborne games that developers think, "I have to make this the most depressing thing ever, devoid color, and with the worst design."

Well, played it with a friend and it felt pretty awful. The gameplay started to click near the end, but it looks horrible for a FF title. The characters are unappealing and feel like they stepped outta DMC. I'm happy for people who liked Nioh, but this doesn't feel like it has any visual relation to FF besides Chaos. I was really underwhelmed. As someone who hasn't played Nioh, but got it recently, it made me want to put that farther down in my stack of backlogged games.

I did like Black Mage a lot, but my friends were useless in every way. The tutorial was also not great, it feels real wonky to have attacks on triggers like that. Reading the thread I see there was a controller type that fixed that, but I've already deleted the demo. I dunno, I think if I was in middle school I'd enjoy this edgy stuff, but it just didn't jive. I wish I could've liked it.

Finally had some time to sit down and beat this demo. Chaos on hard was a very fun fight and I'm very hyped to see what happens to this game. Will gather my thoughts and send in some feedback during the weekend.

Well that was fun. Managed to beat it on hard. I didn't had any issues until meeting the boss. It took me a bit to understand how MP system works in this title. Once that clicked, the boss was easy to beat.

Posted my feedback, back to SE, but wow, it is so awkward using the DS to fill out surveys

They just want feedback. Game companies have given people completely wrong expectations when they hear alpha or beta or demo and when a real early build to get feedback gets released.. complaints.

You could have done it on a computer! The survey link is in the OP

I get this game is going to be divisive, and I too was as underwhelmed as anyone by the trailer. But damn I have had a blast with this demo.

I actually just finished Final Fantasy XV and absolutely hated the combat, worst combat system I can remember in a AAA game recently. Following that up with this on the other hand is everything I could want out of an "souls" style Final Fantasy game gameplay wise. Retains that flow of combat but implements the job system that is so iconic and really varies up the moment to moment gameplay. The in the fly switching and skill tree upgrading felt really great.

I have a feeling this game could have a cult following of people who are really into the job system / character customization elements. If you don't like learning lots of mechanics I could see where this game would feel like a drag, but I found it very energizing and loved it start to finish. I really had to master the mechanics to beat Chaos on Normal, but it felt fair by the end when I realized I need to take advantage of all the systems.

That said, I have no idea what they're going for with the general art direction, tone and character design. Those elements could use a refresh for sure.

If you manage that keep him alive, the black guy AI companion actually do a shit ton of Ki/Stamina damage. Pretty big against the boss.

I won't lie, I enjoyed the combat in this one. However, everything else is genuinely awful. I hope they aren't opposed to doing rewrites. They need to get an actual writer in there to fix this trash.

Nioh first beta they actually listened and did a ton of improvements. I don't have a PS5 yet but is the game naturally that dark? Something about it looks off.

The thing is, they have their best writer working on it, Nojima who did FFVII Remake, the original one, FFX .. etc.
But it's still bad for some reason.

When I said they need to hire a real writer I said that knowing that Nojima is working on this one.

Nojima has a terrible track record. His most impressive credit is FF7, which is a game he wrote alongside someone who actually has a good track record (Kitase). So, it is a little hard for me to believe that he is the reason that game turned out as well as it did. Nojima is a nightmare.

Especially if you read the FFX-3 novel, that shit is something else. Square needs to hire better writers.

He also wrote FFX.

He's a mixed bag, most writers are.

Why do so many games have "origin" in their titles nowadays? Is it supposed to add some level of depth to the story? Final Fantasy doesn't have a timeline as each game is different So I don't get why the specialists of marketing chose that title.
