Centrists will back anyone these days so it doesn't come as a surprise.
There it is, I don't have to read any other posts in this thread.

That's a good point -- Cuomo is not my governor so almost my entire opinion about him has been shaped by the last 3 weeks of his press conferences, where the majority of governors have failed to take positive action on this outbreak and Cuomo is generally considered to be among the best. So to me it's just so surprising to have a hate thread in Cuomo given the circumstances. But then again "I'm not trying to make andrew Cuomo happen" either, I'll likely never vote for him in any election because I don't live in New York. There just seems to be this tendency here where if any politician is doing anything admirable, unless they are a tiny handful of congress people, that they deserve to be villified. The timing of this one, when you have other governors telling people to go out to their local restaurants or suggesting coronavirus is a hoax, just seems so bizarre
All you need to do to get people's support is have a pretty face and appear on TV a whole bunch, it seems.Y'all cancelled Gillum faster than rabbits fuck for having drugs and a male escort, but Cuomo can fight against LGBT rights, Medicaid, and used "shucking and jiving" against the first black President and get away with it because he's on TV discussing a pandemic he helped exacerbate in his home state?
Forgive me for holding politicians accountable especially when their policies and actions end up costing lives in the midst of a global pandemic. I'll be a better team player.
Fair point. My point is purity tests are dumb when compared to and in context of the current Republican Party lead by the orange one.
He was last elected in 2002, that's almost 20 years now. So no, not really.
But if you were willing to engage the thread and refrain from tired meta-commentary about this community you'll see the things Cuomo is doing during this crisis that makes him worthy of scrutiny. That's a good point -- Cuomo is not my governor so almost my entire opinion about him has been shaped by the last 3 weeks of his press conferences, where the majority of governors have failed to take positive action on this outbreak and Cuomo is generally considered to be among the best. It's easy to like him when you don't have context on how he's a horrible personAs an independent, I actually kinda like him. I admit I know nothing about his past, but he has shown leadership these last few weeks. I like that he actually just seems like a normal guy. I'd probably vote for him. I'm not voting Biden.
Him acting like a leader in a time of crisis is like...bare minimum for any Governor. Meanwhile, Cuomo has literally exacerbated the problems that have made COVID-19 so dangerous in New York, not to mention all the other terrible shit he's done.No one is ever good enough for this place it seems, like make what fucking happen? Maybe worry about that when whatever "what" is actually starts happening. For now, he's actually acting like a leader during this crisis.
Fucking A'
I think the concept of "purity politics" invoked in such a way is cancerous on political discussions. I would reframe from that sorta of thinking and try to at least properly contextualize criticisms and concerns people have. When you invoke purity politics in a context like this you're basically saying "it could be worse" and that's useless to any sort of productive discourseFair point. not even a pretty face lol. dude looks like he's melting right before our faces. All you need to do to get people's support is have a pretty face and appear on TV a whole bunch, it seems.
This but unironically.I for one can't wait to tear down every member of this party until there's no one left.

The country is more polarized than ever. There's 0 chance a Republican wins a governorship in NY unless we put up a complete incompetent idiot. You just can't compare the post-9/11 landscape to this.LMAO. Time exists therefore it doesn't count? Stop it. NY can and will elect a republican governor if the conditions are right.
NOTE: NY isn't just NYC. Upstate tends to go red and so does Long Island. I'm not saying it's a 50/50 shot but let's not pretend it can't happen. It will again in your lifetime.
NYC elected two republicans as mayor back to back. One of which got 3 terms!LMAO. Time exists therefore it doesn't count? Stop it. NY can and will elect a republican governor if the conditions are right.

"Yes, Democrats, yes. Tear down your own. Saves us the trouble..."
Do you see the issue with judging someone solely on press briefings while knowing nothing else about them?I don't live in the USA but watch tune in every day for his daily press briefings. He comes across as a great leader and highly likeable. If you don't want him, I wish he could be our leader.
I lived in NYC under Cuomo. Still stand by liking him and since I was a NY resident, I guess I'm informed!Goddamn so many of you showing your asses on Cuomo holy shit. Here's a suggestion: if you don't know anything about the subject...maybe don't share your uninformed opinion on it while also ragging on the people who have direct experience with the subject in question?
Obviously wasn't talking about you; was referring specifically to people coming into this thread simultaneously proclaiming their ignorance of Cuomo's record and suggesting that criticism of said record was unwarranted based on...presumably nothing?I lived in NYC under Cuomo. Still stand by liking him and since I was a NY resident, I guess I'm informed!
I mean, he went on The Daily and was like NY doesn't need to shelter in place.Pretty much.Cuomo is responsible for the deaths of thousands of NYers because he explicitly refused the city to declare shelter in place.
Gov. Cuomo says he won't approve coronavirus 'shelter-in-place' order for New York City after mayor tells residents to prepare
Cuomo said that such drastic policies would create more fear amid the COVID-19 outbreak, which has now infected more than 6,500 people across the U.S. and killed at least 115, according to Johns Hopkins University.www.cnbc.com
He's having his limelight because he's one of the few acting like a leader but in reality he's just been bad before this all started.
Nope. But I live in IL now and am an advocate of the State undergoing bankruptcy because of the pension obligation being a shackle around our neck, so probably not the most judgmental of a governor making a hard decision to balance a deficit, lol.Obviously wasn't talking about you; was referring specifically to people coming into this thread simultaneously proclaiming their ignorance of Cuomo's record and suggesting that criticism of said record was unwarranted based on...presumably nothing?
Since you are so informed...you wanna defend his Medicaid cuts? His formation and support of IDC in the state legislature?
I guess putting people's lives in danger while others die makes him a likable guy. Your fellow citizens lives matter. He shouldn't get a pass for allowing this to reach an extreme. Demand better politicians and accountability. He's not going to be removed from office if you criticize him but at least you can try to change his ways for the better by shedding a light on his policies.I lived in NYC under Cuomo. Still stand by liking him and since I was a NY resident, I guess I'm informed!
New York's ventilator shortage also seems to be, in many ways, the governor's fault. A 2015 report from his administration predicted that when faced with a "severe" influenza or influenza-like pandemic (such as, say, the one that's upon us right now), New York would fall 15,783 ventilators short of the necessary amount. Cuomo's plan, according to documents dug up by journalist John Riley, was to "allocate" ventilators rather than just buy more to have in readiness. While the federal government has obviously done a poor job of supplying ventilators, medical supplies, and hospital beds to the most afflicted states, it doesn't help that Andrew Cuomo has been kneecapping New York hospitals and their workers during the decade he's been in charge
So you aren't going to defend it openly but are going to low-key defend by suggesting cutting Medicaid during a pandemic is necessary for balancing a deficit. Yup, about what I expected.Nope. But I live in IL now and am an advocate of the State undergoing bankruptcy because of the pension obligation being a shackle around our neck, so probably not the most judgmental of a governor making a hard decision to balance a deficit, lol.

This is a good post. For fuck's sake people "purity testing" Cuomo isn't even an issue here, he's not running in an election at the moment so nobody is "cancelling" Cuomo or whatever dumb buzz words people like to use to deflect criticism. It's very important to keep in check we shouldn't swoon over politicians for looking good on TV while completely ignoring the substance behind the presentation, you'd think we'd learn after the last NY hero, "America's Mayor" Rudy Giuliani.
Simply commending him for his presentation isn't the issue here, he very much is doing a good public job and nobody will or at least should attack you for appreciating that in a time where America's leaders are failing so hard to do the same. But at the same time it's entirely fair game to look beyond this isolated action and remind people of the man's entirety, and especially of his own failures in the early developments of this pandemic that he's now taking a spotlight in action.
