Ok here we go… long post. Sit tight and prepare for a story of horror, madness and pure pain.

Like a lot of IT professionals, I am heavily invested in the Microsoft eco-system. When it works, everything is fantastic and everything is connected, but when it fails, it is like your digital life gets nuked out of existence. One of my colleagues at work has, just like me and probably a lot of us, a Microsoft account since the OG Xbox days. This means he has been a loyal MS customer for 20 years or so. He has Office, Gamepass, Live, an EA subscription, a Visual Studio pro sub and has quite a bit of projects running on Azure (paid).

So about 4 weeks ago, suddenly his account got "locked" because of "suspicious activity". Ms declares that you can unlock this by filling in a form and they will get back to you within 24 hours.

A locked account? What does this mean for the loyal MS customer? And what does it mean for a gamer?
  • No more access to your emails
  • No more access to OneDrive (and your backups and your old pictures/files/…). This is REALLY bad since OneDrive is constantly advertising to use it as a backup system. Never lose your files. Yeah sure… NOT! Some people have 20 year old family pictures on this and not locally synced. Can you imagine?
  • No more OneNote and no more Office. If you are relying on Office for daily business or actual work, you can kiss all that goodbye.
  • No more Xbox Live. If you didn't set your Xbox as your "home console" (my colleague didn't do this since he didn't need it) it is basically bricked. That nice and expensive Xbox One X is now effectively useless.
  • Gamepass… forget it. Not on Xbox and not on PC.
  • EA access, bye!
  • Even if you have your Xbox as home console, you can play offline. That means all your grinding and building you did in online games (Fortnite, Apex, Minecraft,..) is now effectively gone. My colleague has 3 kids, try to explain to them they can't continue Fortnite or Minecraft. Seriously… try to imagine this.
  • These 1000s of Euros/Dollars of games you have…. Hahahah… you wish sucker.
  • Using that fancy new Edge Chromium browser? Lol… suddenly it doesn't work so good any more.
  • Have kid accounts linked to your main account as a family account? Oh dear… no way to manage those any more.
  • Using Azure for development or hosting websites? Gone, locked out.
  • Using Azure DevOps to develop code and deploy? Bye.
  • And all the time you are locked, MS keeps charging you for your services. Gamepass, Live, EA access, Azure…. Keep paying sucker.

All this would be a minor inconvenience *if* MS could resolve this in a few days. But here is the kicker… usually it lasts 30-90 days!!! Also they do not communicate and you have no way to see what the status of your unlock request is. To make it EVEN MORE crazy, in many cases they just lock your account permanently.

Ha I hear you say…. But he got his account locked because he is obviously a dirty criminal?

Sure… a guy with a 20 year old account is surely doing stuff wrong on purpose Microsoft. Yeah… that must be it.

We did quite a bit of research online and asked a lot of other people how they think they got locked. Turns out it isn't that hard. One of the main culprits seems to be OneDrive. Remember it is advertised as a backup solution? Well backing up "illegal stuff" from your HDD can get you locked. Nudes? Porn? Maybe some illegal MP3s, some movies? Maybe even some roms? Yes, locked you pos criminal! Syncing pictures from your iPhone to OneDrive? Oh anything suspicious (your gf/bf naked? Maybe some pictures of your kids in the bath?). LOCKED!

I was under the impression you could do whatever you wanted on OneDrive as long as you didn't share it? Seems like MS thinks differently.

Anyway… I am personally moving away from MS after all that happened before my eyes. Moving my gaming back to PC and Steam. Basically your whole digital life gets deleted because some AI script detected "illegal activities" on one of your services. It just isn't worth it. It will take time and effort but I can't see this happening to me next gen. I will keep GP on my two X1X machines, but I will not invest any more in the MS "dream". This was more or less what people rebelled against when the XB1 was announced. It seems it happened right before our noses.

I am sure it can happen on other platforms, but because MS platform is so expansive and so extensive, the impact is incredible.

Stay away from the MS ecosystem, you have been warned.

I use a different Microsoft account for my Xbox/gaming stuff to my office stuff.

But yeah all ecosystems have this risk, we see the same posts regarding Sony and Apple etc. Bigger risk if you use the same MS account for absolutely everything though - that was your biggest mistake!

so your friend got caught storing stuff he shouldn't and it's a Orwellian nightmare? I don't even like MS that much but seems like your friend got caught with his handy in the cookie jar.

Yeah I'm definitely seeing the potential nightmare scenario. Gonna have to consider multiple accounts which means more passwords to remember -_-

Hmm then you posted this and for me lost pretty much all credibility.

Just because you don't share it doesn't mean you can backup illegally obtained files. That's some very stretched thinking.

Yeah, they could do a lot better when things like this go wrong.

I am in no way defending it, but, if you think other ecosystems are immune from these issues, you're wrong.

Having the same account for personal and work stuff seems like a very bad idea no matter the ecosystem tbh

Yeah be an idiot.

Criminals create account and use them to do illegal stuff. People with 20 year old accounts do things by accident. Ignorance, not being careful or whatever.

You never got a traffic fine?

I am sorry, but you know that OneDrive (Sharepoint too) will get you locked out if you have not legal stuff on there. I guess this is what happened sadly.

Well people don't always take care of what is on their HDDs.

So NOBODY here has ever had anything "finshy" on his HDD?

No not on my Dropbox too. I don't even use OneDrive for that reason with my prviate account. Business accounts should always be separated.

Anyway, who the hell uses One drove for his phone? I can see it for PC because it's one of the cloud services i use, but for your phone? Christ

Lol? OneDrive backs up all your pictures you take and it had 1TB of storage if you have Office. A lot cheaper that iCloud.

What stops steam from doing the exact same to your steam account ?

this is a issue with account based systems in general, not with one in particular.

and if you think your MS account being locked is bad, think how the same would affect google accounts.

I am not arguing against the locked status, MS should fix it MUCH faster, that was the whole point. I am also saying that I am moving away from xBox because of nonsense like this.

Nothing. They do that if you break the rules too. Download illegal games and use the steam api with your normal account and you can get locked out.

I'm forever locked out of my original Xbox Live account that I made in 2006 because that email address was flagged for """""suspicious activity""""" back in 2014 and no matter how much I tried to get it back I couldn't. I lost tons of digital games and thousands of hours worth of game time because of that bullshit.

That's one of the reasons why I switched to the PlayStation ecosystem, and the reason why I stopped using Hotmail/Outlook.

Out of all the customer services I have had to encounter, MS has one of the best experiences I ever had. They might lack the knowledge sometimes to resolve your issues, but they always try their best. At least in my case. I did get banned twice (few days and 2 weeks) but that was my own fault and I learned from that. Been a loyal customer for 2 decades as well. The amount of years you are a customer doesn't mean you're always innocent smh.

Your post reads like one of those '' Help I got banned for suspicious activity, I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!''.

Well backup on OneDrive is just a click away, not everybody know what he is backing up.

Kinda incredible this thread is turning into "people get what they deserve, f*cking criminals".
Its more of a "actions have consequences" thing.

Must be sad your narrative of MS is bad because of issues affecting every account system thread didnt pan out as you liked.

I've constantly uploaded "illegal" Files on my Dropbox to transfer it to my Iphone since it's basically the only way. Never had any problem, so yeah it's pretty shitty that your acc gets locked.

You can fuckin Upload Music, Movies etc on Youtube and max. get a Strike and your video gets blocked. Why can't MS just remove said Data? Why do they have to lock the whole Account?

There are quite a few people with this issue indeed. Most of them have no idea what this "suspicious activity" was/is. There is no communication.

This is just counter-productive from a MS points of view. banning 1 week old accounts when they do something weird I can understand, banning 20 year olf accounts? Probably those people didn't do anythign wrong on purpose.

local backup is much more reliable anyway.

besides, having everything in one account is too risky. always have secondary accounts and stuff for important stuff. i keep all my financial stuff completely separate from the accounts i use to play online.

Okay boomer.

1. Any unencrypted files will get processed through several security and safety policies, including tools related to child pornography and other horrible things. Nobody wants that content on their service.

2. If you really don't want people to be looking at your files, you should have used the Vault storage in OneDrive that encrypts things end-to-end and keeps things encrypted.

I accidentally had my game backups on OneDrive for years, which I just deleted. So I wonder what exactly they don't like.

As an industry specialist who've worked with ALL major cloud providers (MS, Google, Amazon), Microsoft's has THE BEST support and security systems/countermeasures. They do not lock down accounts easily.

That said, you should ALWAYS disconnect your private and professional services and account

Because you broke the rules. I don't know why people try to make it better by saying "ugh there is no other way to upload my ILLEGAL files to get them on my phone/...". Like you create an account and you accept the TOS or over all the years they send you the updated ones which you automatically accept for get your account deleted by telling them.

Why is that such a problem? Why do they have to allow illegal things? The Youtube thing is also not true anymore. Try that with a fresh account and see what happens to it. Agreements are there for a reason.

Does he have 2FA/MFA activated? Might be unauthorized access from somewhere.

I don't think that's true. Having stuff like MP3s, movies and porn on your HDD isn't "illegal", what's illegal is sharing those files publicly. The only thing which they likely check for automatically is hashes for child pornography / terrorism stuff.

I'ved worked for MS support and can attest that any pornographic stuff on your account can (not always) flag your account. Suggestive (non porno) photos of your kids can also flag your account.

As an IT professional they should know to use different accounts for work/personal/gaming account. They also should know to be careful what they keep in the cloud ...
