Prices for ventilators are rising dramatically as states in need of these life-saving medical devices bid up the prices, Governor Andrew Cuomo said in his daily news conference on Saturday.

"We are literally bidding up the prices ourselves," he said, noting that ventilator prices have gone from $25,000 to $40,000.

With no coordinating committee, all 50 states, plus the federal government, are trying to acquire ventilators to treat critically ill coronavirus patients, he said. With supply of ventilators limited, the bidding is pushing up prices drastically.

"We are all shopping the same distributors, the same groups," Cuomo said. "It's not even legally price-gouging...This is just private-market competition."

In the news conference, Cuomo suggested that either the federal government set up a nationwide purchasing agent that could distribute ventilators based on states' needs or that states come together to set up a voluntary buying consortium. Either could help stop governors who are trying to protect their residents from working at cross purposes. "You can see prices going up literally during the course of the day," Cuomo said.

But socialism is evil and Medicare for all is not reasonable
while other countries with NHS are working on containing the pandemic, US is still focused on how I can make a buck.

This is late stage capitalism

"Fuck You, Got Mine" is somehow still not at it's peak, IMO.

If anything, having a single payer healthcare system, where the federal government is the primary "buyer" and the local administrations handle the distribution and maintenance would make so much fucking sense right about now.

Instead you get this morbid battle royale type environment.

Nobody could ever imagine that the federal government telling all 50 states to get their own ventilators and then scrambling to acquire their own ventilators to look less inept would lead to a bidding war. Nobody!

I forgot the name but before the United States became what it is, IIRC the founders setup a government that had a much weaker federal government and stronger individual state governments. It was scrapped after some time because if I recall trade between states became a hassle.

Somehow this is reminding of that bit of history.

Why even have the federalists beat the anti-federalist, union beat the confederates, if 150+ later the states have to do the federal government's job because somehow the anti-federalists and confederates survived and wound up running the government.

The feds not stepping in means that the states should form compacts to buy/appropriate the supplies they collectively need.

Yup. Been thinking about this for a while. Suppose Fed could try to stop it because it affects interstate commerce, but try arguing that in the middle of a pandemic and get blown the eff out come November.

So blue states, which by and large are far wealthier, are gonna scoop everything while Red States are on their own. Way to kill your own base, you dumb orange fuck.

No fucking kidding. You'd think a pandemic costing the lives of tens of thousands would be a trigger for reason, but nah everything devolves back to money, and our government is doing jack all to help. This is disgusting.

The problem with the govt taking charge is that means Trump taking charge and distributing them as he sees fit. Not sure that's a better option.

The Government has turned everything into a game of profits. There was an interview the other day with an Official from a state and he was talking about the surgical masks. Typically they buy them for about 5 cents a mask. Since Trump turned it into a free for all market they are being forced to pay as much as $5 a mask outbidding other cities and states.

Very few Americans in history have ever known a President who has straight up abandoned them in their hour of need.

Interesting territory we're in now.

Meanwhile the President and the Democratic front runner have no interest in fundamental changes to how we purchase and distribute healthcare in this country.

This has nothing to do with what healthcare system we have. We could have Universal Healthcare and if the Government refuses to purchase supplies etc. we are no better off then the current system.

This is a Deliberate Crisis created by a mans ego not the healthcare system

I just made a post about this in the main thread. To quote myself:

Some late night observations:

-Trump orders states to buy their own resources and then strategically outbids them at the last minute when they do manage to secure orders for critical medical supplies.

-Trump has vendors cut off states like Michigan due to personal grudges with governors.

-Trump sends Florida 200% of its requests from the national emergency stockpile (with more en route) while starving MA, ME, CO, CA, NJ, NY and NM. CO got a single day's worth of supplies while CA received 170 broken ventilators; Maine received barely 5 percent of its requests and we all know how poorly NY is being treated at the moment.

-Arizona is now also receiving its full requests from the Feds.

-South Carolina, like Florida, has also already received two full shipments of supplies as of yesterday.

I'm sensing a pattern here...

So, not an American here: what is stopping Trump to support the states he needs for an EC win in November, at the detriment of all other states?

Because that's definitively seomething he'd do.

But they told us the market would just make more ventilators to account for demand. They wouldn't just strive for profits...

The ventilator market is already running at full capacity and the US order of 100k alone is more than the whole industry produces per year according to the largest manufacturer in the world.

It was a bad idea just leaving such a critical component of saving people's lives in this pandemic up to private market reaction anyway. Leaders could have reacted faster and nationalized the manufacturing or demanded more production of this critical equipment earlier with appropriate incentives.

How long until the official statement is "you don't get official support until your state votes for me"?

People actually thought a drastic event threatening the entire country was gonna force people to work together to solve it instead of turning everyone against each other?

he is going to take care of the states that he wants votes from ... minus Michigan now, but Florida is getting all they want and need.

He has the country by the balls and will make life hell for those that oppose him. These next 8 months.....
