STAR WARS™: Squadrons - Pilot Briefing: Ranks, Rewards, & Progression

Let's go over the core pillars of Squadrons' online experience.

Challenges

You'll want to regularly complete your Daily Challenges to keep getting rewarded while playing Squadrons. They're often simple objectives that provide you with Glory to unlock cosmetics for your starfighters and pilots and encourage you to try different ships and components to achieve completion. Glory is also earned based on how you perform in a match. Operation Challenges, however, are different. They can reward you with unique cosmetics and are tied to the game's ongoing Operations.

Operations and Ranks

Operations
are 8-week cycles that happen in Squadrons, and each Operation brings with it a set of unique cosmetic rewards that can only be earned by completing its Challenges. Certain Challenges also offer unique rewards, too, so once they're gone, you won't be able to get the cosmetic unless the Operation Challenges return one day. Seeing which pilots are showing off their unique flair will be a good way to tell if you're up against a dedicated ace.

Also tied into these 8-week resets is your Fleet Battles rank. With every Operation's conclusion and the start of a new one, your competitive rank tied to Fleet Battles will reset, allowing for a regular reassessment of your skills. To get your first rank, you'll need to play in ten placement matches.

The ranks are as follows from lowest to highest:

Maverick - Hotshot - Hero - Valiant - Legend - Galactic Ace

sws-rank.jpg.adapt.crop16x9.1455w.jpg

Levels

Players also have their own personal level. Your level is a linear progression path that does not reset, unlike your competitive rank. For the first forty levels, you'll unlock Requisition points that can be used to unlock ship components. If you're one of our more dedicated pilots and you hit level 40, you'll have enough points to unlock all components, allowing you to try out every potential starfighter build. Our goal with levelling isn't that you'll get more powerful as you level up, but rather that you'll have more options available to you (via components) as you play.

There's more in the link above.

Honestly the progression and stats here is looking to be more impressive than Battlefront 2's.

Meaningless numbers. Without knowing what you actually get, and how much does it cost for the new ship/character skin piece, it is all white noise.

Tell me how many hours do I need to play to unlock Darth Vader.

Cool stuff. Curious about how long it'll take to unlock some of the more dramatic skins/cosmetics (not that we even know what those are right now). The Operations sound neat enough, though they're basically just ranked seasons.

Given that I'll probably play the ever-living shit out of this game with VR + HOTAS support, I'm excited for this sort of progression.

I have until October 13 (Quest 2) to hear about how it plays and especially how the VR is.

XP/Progression system is a pretty big turn off for me. Just let me have all the loadouts from the very start please.......let people grind for cosmetics if they want.

I thought I saw there was no 3rd person view and it's cockpit only. What's the point of skins if you can't see them?

I had gotten excited and bought a nice flight stick for this then played a few space games and realized why flying Sims were never for me lol. It looks fantastic and I look forward to seeing people playing it.

The leveling not about making you more powerful is a big deal to me. I think it was completely idiotic to have level systems be about x does more damage/less cooldown like Battlefront /Battlefront 2. Rewarding killers who are already amazing at the game with thousands of hours of playtime, and I mean they would probably destroy anyway but giving them an additional leg to kill people even easier really really dumb. I've got I think about 80hours in BF2 and only unlocked I think the second weapon and maybe 1 attatchment for the first for each class.

It feels especially bad in Star Fighter Assault where I felt there was a big difference in performance with max Star Cards. Maybe because it's more head on and less chane to get the drop on someone or cover etc.

Can I not use my ÂŁ10 coupon to pre-purchase this? Saying not eligible on the Epic Game Store.

It's killing me that I will have to wait to get my Series X before I can play this.

I grew up on Xwing vs Tie fighter, Wing Commander, etc.
I still point to Wing Commander: Prophecy as one of my favorite space games in the universe. The fact that the FMVs changed depending on your decisions, the great campaign, the cool variety of ships, the moral dilemmas in certain quest lines, etc. All really great and the precursor to me for things like Mass Effect.

I mean, not really? It's a thread pertaining to the game and the second post in the thread points out that this is out next week which is pretty shocking considering the fact that there's been almost no marketing for it.
I think since its a 40 dollar game... the marketing budget must be pretty dire. I think they counting on good reviews and WOM to spread the word.

I hope its sells well enough for them to consider post launch support (more maps, starfighters etc.).

Don't care about GaaS but I'm buying if the campaign's good.

EDIT: I mean, let's be honest I'm buying regardless to fly Star Wars ships in VR. But I'll buy day 1 if the campaign's good.

Lower price and no microtransactions=next to no marketing.

The main uploads for the "Hunted" CG short from 10 days ago combine to about 3.5 million views. Maybe the Mandalorian S2 hype will bleed over to people looking up the newest Star Wars game as well. It'll probably do fine (not Battlefront numbers of course).

Yup. Flying an X-Wing in VR is worth the price of admission for me. Even if said price kind of had me buy a Rift S and a HOTAS stick, too.

There was one game, and only one game, that could make me do that. And I'm still having a hard time believing that EA is making X-Wing, but in VR.

Ranks is great and all I really care about here, although unlocks is a fine way to go for that short term progression. But that's pretty standard stuff, ranks in games are much fewer and further between. I'm really not a "skins" guy, especially if I can't see myself while playing, so that side of this game doesn't appeal much to me.

My only concern is the devs not continuing to support/balance the game soon after launch...I know GaaS combined with EA would have its own concerns, but there has to be some middle ground (which EA seems to have trouble finding).

So pumped to play this on my Rift though.

From the same article:

While almost all of the game's experiences will be built in at launch, we'll still be updating it over time. We've seen a few questions about this, but should anything need to be balanced or fixed, we'll be actively taking your feedback to make this the best possible starfighter experience! Release notes will be provided with any updates we make so you can always know what's changed.

From the same article:

Right, I've been following this game and I know this is the developers' response, but I'm still relatively skeptical as to what level and for how long. I'm sure they'll patch it up and maybe add some new skins/challenges for a few months, but what I'm mainly doubting is continuing to balance (which usually takes a long time to figure out), and whether or not they'll add actual new content like components, maps (only 6 on launch), modes and other features. I don't expect all those things, but a few would be nice.

Maybe I've been living under an RPG-shaped rock recently but I feel like apart from that admittedly rad CG short, this game isn't getting promoted very well at all. So many folks are shocked it's out so soon.

This is one of those things where I really, really wished that I had a PC VR headset instead of a PSVR. I'm sure it'll look far, far better on PC. Ah well.

What's the state of this game as it relates to Game Pass?

It sounds like the EA Play + Game Pass thing starts October 1st (I think). Does that mean there will be a 10hr preview for this game at that time?

My guess is that they are taking the architecture from Battlefront II, adding a short campaign and MP options. The BF2 community was screaming for any update to the ships for years and was met with deafening silence until this was announced and it was clear why they never added anything to the space side.

The X-Wing/Tie-Fighter series is one of my favorite games from the 90s and all time favorite star wars game, but I'm doubtful this will fill that void because of the emphasis on MP.
