Let's get nerdy here for a second.

The TIE Interceptor is more of an even fight. The TIE Fighter itself only has maneuverability versus a X-Wing on its side, which is why it had an upper edge on the tight corridors of the Death Star trenches.
True, but I'd balance the Interceptor against an A-Wing for game purposes. Make them speed demons. The only thing that can outrun an A-Wing in a straight line is a TIE Interceptor.

Honestly, the A-Wing needs a bit of a boost. Something to call its own. Y-Wings have better armor and Ion Cannons. X-Wings have decent speed and maneuverability, and a solid offensive output. A-Wings are just slightly faster X-Wings with worse guns and missiles.

I am curious what the two new ships will be balanced for. I honestly expected the fourth ship to be a B-Wing and a TIE Advanced.

It's a $40 Star Wars space combat game with full crossplay, full VR support, cosmetics earned through gameplay and heavy simulation elements like pre-planning strategies before battles and diverting power between subsystems in your ships and some of you are upset? Fucking hell. This is incredible shit. Smile for a change, you miserable lot!

Oh, I'm smiling!

I men, I still don't quite get why it's not a full Rogue Squadron game with a campaign that I'd be slobbering over for the next few months, but I guess I'm still cautiously interested?

Curious how they handle deployments. Something like a Ratio system so you can go with supped up fighters vs literal disposable buckets like the Gundam Vs Series for balance purposes. I don't know I see a lot of potental. I also see a lot of possible canon fodder just flying around to populate the fleet maps which im crossing my fingers for.

Could we really be getting something that does honor to the X-Wing and Tie Fighter franchises?

Fuck yea.

Can't wait for more info. Have to imagine interiors are far better than what we saw in battlefront2

Who I am kidding, I will preorder it the moment it comes up in Steam.

Or even before that. I have been praying for a successor to X-Wing vs TIE Fighter for ages.

I distinctly remember X-Wings managing to take a hit or two and TIEs exploding as soon as anything breaths on them, but I can't say I've specifically paid attention to that aspect when rewatching the films.
Generally it's even kill trades - X-Wings and TIEs alike generally blow up with a good solid hit, with only glancing blows really being blocked by an X-Wing's shields generally either for convenient protagonist/Wedge purposes, or so someone can give out information before they actually die.

Like the films basically treat it as a standard WW2-style dogfighting setup, without any implication that a particular fighter is better/stronger than the other.

A-wings are also more manoeuvrable and have a smaller hit box.

The fourth ships, as per the screenshots we've seen, are the U-Wing and the TIE Reaper.
But what do they do? I know the relative balance between the main three. X, Y, and A. Fighter, Interceptor, and Bomber. But U-Wings I've only seen in Rogue One and they didn't seem all that impressive. Never saw a TIE Reaper before.

Honestly, I'd rather have a B-Wing. Even if they're just halfway between X and Y, with more firepower.

Whether the game is good or not, I still legit get chills whenever I hear Empire's Astroid Chase music, which is still my favorite piece of John Williams work :)

Will this be as good as Ace Combat?
Are you expecting someone here to be able to answer that question off of an engine reveal trailer?

Will purchase for VR support
+1

X-Wing piloting in VR has actually be my dream since getting VR. I wasn't sure I'd see the day.

I hope one day we'll see a full campaign-based next-gen X-Wing or Tie Fighter, assuming this is more arcadey and shorter in story. X-Wing and Tie Fighter were like 30+ hour experiences. With VR support.

This looks nuts! But in-engine can be a trap. Definitely interested in seeing gameplay though!

I agree, I'd love me some more OT-established fighters (I have excellent memories of the B-Wing on that crappy Star Wars Rebel Assault 2 game, the thing is the one man army of assault craft). The thing with those bigger "transport ships" is they might just play differently, what with them having broadside guns and whatnot, making them truly a different class altogether for gameplay purposes.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the Advanced was Vader's? I don't recall it getting used afterwards, if it was a prototype or some such.

I imagine we'll see B-Wings and possibly Defenders eventually. B-Wings would feel weird without.

I imagine the U-Wing is like a tank: lots of fire power but slow maneuverability. If we were getting Rogue Squadron-esque planet battles it would be an anti-infantry ship like the Clone Gunship.

Can I get the Naboo Starfighter as an unlockable/DLC?
If so I'll buy one copy.
If not I'll buy one copy.

Where is the info that there are "heavy simulation" elements. X-Wing and TIE are "light" sim, fyi. But anyways, where are people getting that information besides that screenshot showing the energy levels?

Also even Y-Wings can take on TIE Interceptors, they show it in RoTJ, a Y-wing ace takes out two interceptors in one pass. Keyan Farlander, the dude you play as in X-Wing, and also the Y-Wing that originally survived the Death Star run, also flew in RoTJ in a B-Wing taking on ties.

My guesses on some of the skins/ship stuff:

Pilots are seen during loading screens and multi lobbies, similar to Modern Warfare 2019 (that has soldiers [your team] walking around with guns up in lobbies, then during the opening cinematics before games start as they come out of vans or helicopters), translating to a lineup similar to what is in the trailer of 5 pilots standing together, then loading up into ships as they leave for a loading screen, some sort of camera pan of everyone before the game starts. You still dont see your pilot for like 95% of actual gameplay, but it's still there for others to see if they get close or in those non-flying moments.

They're going to go the season pass (free + premium) route, with rank-ups for skins and decals for ships and pilots. "Completing" a pass would result in a new ship. We've got TIE Phantom, TIE Striker, two classes of TIE Advanced, then on the rebel side you've got the B-Wing, ARC-170s reused from the Clone Wars, E-Wing, Z95 Headhunter, captured version of TIE Fighter, etc. Drip feeding new ships gives them time to balance and gives players time to get used to everything. If they make seasons roughly 4-6 weeks and have one republuc and one Imperial ship per season, you're looking for at least four seasons/six months of content right there with previously established ships.

Hell, they could even go for some sort of paid expansion for a 3rd faction of Scum and Villainy (bounty hunters) or Thrawn's Ascendency.

Basically, for ship choice and ability, I'm looking at the X-Wing miniatures tabletop game for inspiration. Tons and tons of options out there.

Don't care about PvP, but if the campaign is at least "ok" - I'm in. Why is this just $40? (not that I'm complaining, but perhaps the campaign is very short or something?)

I'm in for VR support. Hope they have support for the Index controllers. Its fun playing something like VTOL in VR using your hands in VR to flip switches and buttons and control the flightstick.

Wish the battles were bigger than just 5 v 5... was kind of hoping for more Battlefield style huge battles but in space.

Depends on the lore followed really, there was mass produced advanced for ace pilots in the old video games, table top, and old EU lore. Also the early x1 Advanced prototypes used by the inquisition and high ranking imperials

It was nothing special but it's not as bad as people say it is.

I legit enjoyed Battlefront 2's campaign. Iden Versio was a great addition to the franchise and I only wish the campaign could have been longer to better let the narrative breath.
I am happy Squadrons is taking place during the same timeframe.

I'm going to nerd out here a little, sorry lol.

Vader's craft is called the TIE Advanced/X1 Prototype

That prototype was developed into the "Avenger" (or simply "Advanced") which is much more elongated than Vader's with an improved, smaller hyperdrive than the bulky hyperdrive used on the X1, and the cockpit positioning is in the middle-back. The Avenger was the preferred TIE type used by Imperial Ace Maarek Stele (from TIE Fighter) and preferred it over the Defender (from "The Stele Chronicles").

I was interested in this, but like others in this thread, the VR support made this a must own for me. Now I have to figure out which flightstick is the one to buy.

This is typical EA bull shot trailers. Remember Battlefield 2 "in-engine" trailers? They never looked that good in gameplay.

The only company I trust with "In-Engine" trailers matching gameplay is Playground Games.

Haha

As for this, I love me some Star Wars. Looking forward to this, although I'm probably only interested in the Campaign.....and if the game has bots for local multiplayer.

NGL, as much as i love that this comes to PSVR, it also kinda dampens my hope for larger, mission-based MP-Modes that go beyond PVP/TDM-style Gameplay and incorporate large-Scale PvE-Battles on a appropriately sized Map.

You know what would make this really interesting vs most competitive shooters and such,

M.A.G style you pick your faction and you never play as the other faction unless you change to the other.

PSVR+PS5 and this is going to be tasty. The spatial awareness you get from VR makes flying and racing games worlds better.
