Ah I just remembered, this means Revan is CANON

One of the Emperor's legions in Rise of Skywalker is named after Revan, so Revan has been canon for a time already. The events of KOTOR may or may not be in their entirety, but Rebels and The Mandaorian allude to a number of events shown/referred to in the games.

Canon is stupid and you should stop caring about it.

I only think about canon in terms of what something which qualifies as such might lead to in future works. In that sense, 90% of me doesn't care either way here. The remaining 10% is a bit curious what it could feasibly connect to in terms of ongoing content.

Yea but eventually when you stop worrying about canon you get a team of game devs coming up with "kicking ass with the force" as their mantra while they create an even bigger gary stu than Revan. 👀
get this Force Unleashed slander away from me, that game was some good honest dumb fun.

Except the star destroyer section

its weird i like star wars but this game was never on my radar. i've heard about it obviously and know people love it but for some reason it doesn't interest me that much. same goes for mass effect but i kinda want to try both series now.

I'm so excited for this, I actually played through the game again on my Series X this year. While obviously parts of it are dated, the story is still fantastic and was a joy to play through. I can't wait to see what a modern version looks like.

Sam Maggs posted about being a writer in this. So they're clearly also reworking or adding to the story/dialogue. More like FF7 Remake than a copy paste?

She wrote COD Vanguard and some recent Star Wars comics.

I'm super, super nervous about what they update/change - some stuff could definitely use tweaking and updating (like restoring Juhani's cut romance for Female Revan), but also what they could theoretically change.

IDK if the changing taste in the market and better graphics, will still warrant a full turn/round-based dice-roll-under-the-hood style of combat.

Or if they change/update the story, given the 'twist' no longer being really (as) achievable given the game's accolades/renown.

edit: Or if the player character will have voiced lines?!

Or any # of other little things that I'm gonna be stuck wondering about until (likely) 2023 at the earliest.

(Also I can't help but wonder about KOTOR 2 remake if this does well, and maybe, stars aligned, KOTOR 3 proper....)

But it wouldn't though. Because Disney isn't trying to fund SW shovelware. To the point of absurdity where even Lego Star Wars has a gargantuan budget and years and years of dev time behind it.

Disney doesn't have to fund anything. And probably aren't funding this. Devs pay their licensing fee and find the money to develop themselves.

Very excited for this. Really hope this continues to fuel interest in The Old Republic MMO. It is in the best spot it has ever really been in and is going strength to strength since it launched on steam. I would still be excited to see a KOTOR 3 though

I'm glad that Jennifer Hale will be Bastila again :)

I wonder who will be the voice of the main character, and very interested to see the characters design in high detail.

I'm really curious about how it will play.

Action RPG seems obvious, and I wouldn't be surprised if there's a better chance of it being strictly turn-based instead of RTwP.

Lucasfilm Games is directly involved apparently.

Well, that's a change. Disney was pretty adamant under Iger that they would not be developing games and would purely just partner with others to license their properties out.

Though I've always been curious the terms of these partnership deals, especially for something like BF2. I expect Disney doesn't license their properties cheaply, so makes me wonder whether they take a flat rate in addition to a good chunk cut of profits. If I were EA, I'd be kinda bothered to have Disney raking in so much of my micro-transaction money when they did not help with dev costs and forced me to deal with the heat from fans all alone while silently counting stacks.

I hope this uses DnD mechanics like the original - maybe updated to match the new ruleset (or not, depending on how that was received).

I'm sure this sentiment has been shared... I'm really excited about this game. I would be really iffy if they ever decided to remake KOTOR 2, but the first game is the perfect candidate for this kind of treatment. I only worry that this won't end up being the same kind of game as the original. A sprawling, party based RPG.

Dear god, NO.

Just take Fallen Order's combat and make it even better.

This is the exact sentiment that will ruin everything good about this game.

This game needs a party based combat system. I don't care if it's turnbased or real time.

It needs lots of skills to interact with.

Needs many different quest outcomes and solutions.

Needs to be non-linear to a certain degree and all the big decisions should stay.

Fuuuuuuuuck no.

I'd take the old turn-based system 100x over what Fallen Order had, unless MASSIVE improvements were made to the latter.

Hope they do not make non-Jedi useless on the remake.

Yeah, KOTOR 2 was definitely way better about this via giving non-jedi companions buffs, either through stats or extra feats/powers they wouldn't have otherwise had that helped pad out some of their weaknesses.

Like...Mission and T3-M4 are kinda useless outside random skillcheck requirements, and in KOTOR 1 crafting wasn't as broad/varied as KOTOR 2's.

why even call it KOTOR at that point

I mean, I'm playing through Wrath of the Righteous right now, and I don't think that you'll find a more outspoken critic of direct translations of PnP systems than me on this entire forum

oh boy do i have a thread in me about that

but if you're just going to make it action with skill trees at least make it a sequel

They said they're partnering with PlayStation, for the inner circle knowledge of PS5 hardware, and LUCASFILM Games, presumably because part of the point is bringing Kotor into canon in a more in-depth way. Which probably explains the multiple references to the era in the HR material.

As a side note, it's super weird seeing people request the old combat system back. That's like, the thing that's aged the most outside of the visuals. Yea the devs are totally bringing combat design from the early 2000s into their 70 million dollar modern remake. Just like FF7 Remake…

For sure, but still the game's pretty short for an RPG.

It's only short in the way current way Open World RPGs are produced nowadays.

That would be like saying Dragon Age Origins is short. And Dragon Age Inquisition comes out with it having side quests up the bum, yet you couldn't ask me ANY side quests worth remembering. Yet with DAO, i can tell you at least 5.

The character focused questslines in Inquisition were fantastic though? The easily ignorable MMO style side quests were bland but the stuff that focused on character interactions and their arcs was A+ dragon age.

Cuz OG KOTOR's combat is bad?

I'd only accept an alternative that's close to Dragon's Dogma. But Fallen Order was a good foundation, it just needed tightening up to be more refined like Sekiro. Make combat like FO, throw in a skill-tree, allow for ranged weapon specialization, and baby you got yourself a stew going.

So... Take KOTOR and remake it into anything, but KOTOR?

No thanks.

People generally don't praise KOTOR for its combat anymore.

Completely disagree. Fallen Order is a completely different type of game (and rips off Dark Souls combat anyway).

I really liked the D&D mechanics. Especially since KOTOR is...you know...an RPG? Overhauling the RPG mechanics completely is a bad idea in my opinion. Improving the D&D mechanics interface however? Streamlining it? That's something I can get behind.

There's absolutely no way a AAA RPG in 2021 is using D&D mechanics. Not happening. And thank god.

I like FO but that game isn't an RPG at all. Might as well replace FO in your post with Bayonetta or something instead.

I agree with the post above. There can be some reasonable updates/changes but the game needs skills (with choice, not just lines of skills), abilities, meaningful narrative choices, meaningful mechanical choices, and full equipment
