I am genuinely surprised that the best ship porn we've gotten in the new TV shows... is a cartoon. That Titan scene was dope!

Also surprised that I actually care about Shaxs. Boy, this show is great.

There was that whole thing in season two of Discovery where the Enterprise crew (and I think all Constellation-class crews?) had their own uniform designs that matched the 60s series, while everyone else got the Discovery-style jumpsuits. They specifically call out the difference on the show, which you can either take to be cheap retconning, convenient/clever fanservice, or whatever else you want it to mean really.

Maybe it's an exploration/support ship thing, who knows? The franchise hasn't been super consistent with uniform designs for a while (also see the Picard uniform timeline).
Oh!

Yes, I forgot about season 2 of Discovery where the crew of the Enterprise had TOS era uniforms, but the crew of the Discovery did not....

So I guess this lack of consistency started with ST:D

Weird...

And it shouldn't be surprising that the best starship eye candy comes from an animated series. Like alien designs, ships are easier and less expensive to do in the medium of animation

Nah, TNG continued with the old uniforms for a season and a half after DS9 introduced new uniforms. The audience just figured the difference between the two was because one was set on a ship while the other was on a station. It wasn't until Voyager started that we realized that wasn't the case. I can see why they didn't change them for S7 of TNG (it was iconic and they weren't going to change for the final season) but it just shows they didn't give a fuck about consistency.

Great finale

RIP Shaxs. He never got to eject a warp core :(

Wonder how they will fill the gaps next season.

The Discovery preview looked alright too, liking this non-stop Trek

This show started kind of meh and ended wonderfully. The last few episodes were more fun than I had with Picard or Discovery and were structured more like the classic series too. I'm very happy it's getting another season. Sad about what they did to Rutherford though.

Current headcanon with regards to uniforms is that, rather than being immediately issued fleetwide all at once, they get rolled out piecemeal, with the exact circumstances varying by time and politics. So, 'new' Starship or newly christened Station? Uses newly issued uniforms. If it launched five years prior? They can continue using the 'legacy' uniforms, at least for a while. If it's particularly important for Starfleet to show off - say, a hub on the cusp of a gateway to another end of the galaxy - then those tend to be top priority for the rollout

Yeah, that's what I think the "official" explanation will be. Since this isn't a live-action show, where it might be understandable to use the old uniforms for budget reasons, here in the series they made a conscious decision to have the Titan crew wear the mid to late 2370s uniform. It's likely that they don't require ships that were on missions before a uniform change to undergo them, not until that specific mission (like a 5 year or 1 year) ends, or until they are due back for maintenance or shore-leave. It would've been logical, for example, for Voyager to just get the design for the new uniforms once they reestablished contact with Starfleet in the later seasons and just make them in the ship. But the producers probably didn't think it was necessary and they were following a rule among the writers that uniforms are only changed after a ship goes back to Earth or something.

Anyway, I loved the season finale as well, and like everybody else, this is the first of the new shows that exceeded my expectations. I'm seeing praise for it everywhere where it's given a chance, so I hope that continues and fans spread the word. I'm certainly going to be doing my part!

The issue is that Discovery was a newer ship than Enterprise, but the Enterprise crew had the newer uniforms.

re: Uniforms.
I think it makes the most sense that there's a list of acceptable uniforms and either the Captain or the Admiral of a fleet/battle group gets to decide.

It's just like how Captains get to decide whether to do 3 shift rotations or 4 shift crew rotations.

Hence I made a note about things of importance - like say, one of their most famous ships commanded by one of their most decorated officers, doing the diplomatic work.

OK I don't care I spoiled myself on the Titan. Damn that ship looks good! Reminds me of the Akira class. Interesting torpedo launcher.

lol
It's interesting because there are people who hate that it's an Akira/Sovereign kitbash. But apparently it was designed via a contest.

Re: headcannon on uniforms, I always liked the idea that since such materials were supplied as needed by replicators, there was no manufacturing and logistical efficiency to arranging for a service-wide rollout. And in fact, rolling out new generations of equipment by ship and by group / division might be considered smarter. It allows for a practical, large scale test of gear without inconveniencing the entire population of Starfleet at the same time.

If one sub-fleet discovers a uniform design doesn't work in the field, the other divisions get the memo to delay replicating sets for their ships.

I didn't know a design already existed. They just made it canon now. Non-canon designs I ignore most of the time so it was a nice surprise for me.

Honestly, this has been one of the neat things with Lower Decks. Unstrained by effects and budget constraints the live action shows were and are, we've gotten a number of new ship designs in a comparatively short amount of time. Lower Decks might just be able to expand out the fleet onscreen in ways only the novels and games have imagined for a good while.

Yeah the show has so much potential because it's animated. Can't wait to finally be able to see it in Europe. Spoiled myself on a bunch of things already but I don't mind. Show looks like a ton of fun.

Oh and btw, this is now the second show in which Riker saves everyone's ass at the end of the season.

Leave him to somehow turn up at the end of Discovery Season 3

Anyway so I didn't expect that they'd actually get this dramatic with their finale but they pulled it off perfectly while meshing it with their humor

The show started off not all that interesting but as the episodes went on I got more and more into it, they settled into a nice stride about halfway through
Now with season 1 concluded I can conclusively say that I am a fan, this is great
And I appreciate the ongoing SoCal references

I am pumped for season 2 and if they release S1 on home media I'll pick it up

It was also super cool to finally see Riker in command of the Titan, even in animated form
I laughed out loud at "It's another Enterprise!" sounds like something my girlfriend might say to me with a mischievous smile
Gave us a bit of a cliffhanger there at the end splitting up the leads like that

That was a Saurian on the Titan's bridge right? That's neat.

They really hit a good balance with this show. Even if it's not traditional Trek, it might be one of my favorite first seasons of a Trek show. I appreciated the cameos in our finale, especially since it's the first time we've ever gotten to see some of that. The badie for the week was great and I'm honestly shocked I didn't even think of them being used.

This show is fucking fun and can have some real heart. While I like Disco and Picard, I really like how Lower Decks isn't a story about saving the entire Galaxy. It's stories are smaller and more personal and I think that's when Trek shines its brightest.

The season definitely ended up with a bang and a high note.

This is my oldest kid's first exposure to Star Trek and she really likes it a lot. She still has no interest in any of the other series or the movies though so the previous episode was super boring for her since none of it made any sense to her. We both loved the season finale though. "Shut up Jen!" got a huge laugh out of both of us too. I love a joke that has a long payoff out of nowhere.

Got caught up on this today and yesterday. Improved so much from the first couple eps, they really dialed down the cringe. I absolutely died at everything with the dog.

Mariner I think is a much better protag than Boimler, and I think they also did a solid job of making that transition as they went. That said, I do think that her character needs a Boimler to play straight man for her , so I think he'll probably come back to the Cerritos at some point next season. Maybe not immediately, we'll see how long he lasts on the Titan.

Was just watching the star trek lower decks cast interview on the comic con channel and man every single comment is about the hate of modern ST.

Very depressing coming off the high that the finale was. I need to stop reading into fan comments after finishing shows.

Great finale the show was ready fun.

I loved this season, had one or two 'meh' but the rest was fantastic.

The finale was a great mix of humour and serious, and the riker/titan/troi cameo was expected but awesome nonetheless.

the "They had a long road.. getting from there to here" line made me almost spit-take it was so good.

Also, them using the TAS versions of kirk/spock on the padd was a nice touch ;)

I've had a busy couple of weeks so watched the final two episodes back to back. What a treat. Easily the best new Trek around and if it keeps this up will be comfortably in the top tier. I hope more people watch it and we get at least a few more seasons.

Curious what they are going to do with Boimler. He looked good at the end. Would be lame to just demote him again.

he appeared at the end of the first episode during a call with Freeman, which was also the scene that revealed she was her mom

To think Generations had a third set of uniforms ready to go.

Yep. Love this story

Star Trek Generations: Why Only Some Uniforms Changed To DS9's

Star Trek Generations has the strangest mix of TNG and DS9-style uniforms.

For Star Trek Generations, the producers decided to make some changes for the big screen: the TNG cast got new Starfleet insignias and brand new uniforms were ordered for the film, which were mostly identical to the TNG TV outfits, except the raised collars were now colored and the pips were moved to the right upper chest; however, just a few days into shooting the movie, the producers suddenly decided to scrap the new uniforms altogether. Star Trek Generations' action figures are the only place the abandoned movie uniforms can be found.

The last-minute call to dump the new movie uniforms led to the decision for Star Trek Generations' cast to wear a mix of the DS9 and Voyager uniforms (the Kate Mulgrew-led spinoff was in preproduction during the TNG movie's shoot). Even though only some of the main cast would be able to wear new uniforms in Generations, this ostensibly fulfilled the producers' requirement to have "new uniforms" for the film. As a result, Stewart, Frakes, Spiner, and Burton borrowed costumes from the DS9 and Voyager wardrobe departments. However, since the uniforms on loan were fitted for DS9 stars Avery Brooks and Colm Meaney and Voyager cast members Robert Duncan McNeill and Garrett Wang — not the TNG cast — it's noticeable throughout the film that the new uniforms don't quite fit.

I'm a bit surprised we didn't find out what Mariner's previous rank was and what exactly got her demoted. I had expected that to show up in the finale.

Garrett Wang mentioned in his podcast with Robert Duncan McNeill, for the start of filming for Voyager, they took him down to wardrobe and had him fitted for some used shoes, from their pile of used shoes. Garrett was horrified and offended at the idea of "used shoes", and he noticed that his shoes had "B. Spiner" written inside of them, and got mad that he was getting Brent Spiner's hand-me-downs. He later realized that those shoes were really valuable, and he should've kept them. (RDM got used shoes that weren't attributed to anyone, which he assumed were probably worn by extras.)

After bitching up a storm, the producers hooked Garrett up with Kate Mulgrew's Italian custom shoe designer, who eyeballed Garrett's feet and said "I got this" (despite Garrett's insistence that he should probably take some measurements), and a month later a pair of absolutely gorgeous handmade custom shoes arrives for Garrett... and they didn't fit.

So then Garrett said "Can I just go to the shoe store and buy myself a pair of ordinary black shoes in my size?" and the producers said "OK."

I know I'm little late but I just want to fall into the choir and also say that gadamn that final episode was great! And also bears repeating, Lower Decks albeti being a cartoon is more Star Trek than Discovery ever tries to be in its best moments.
