A "game" I'm sure a lot of us fans have entertained at least once. Describe as much as you want, really -- setting, combat style, linear or open world, top-downish retro or more modern 3rd person camera, etc. A who's who of series veterans and the role(s) you fancy giving them, too (along with examples if you're down). It's your (imaginary) game! If thread gets traction maybe we can do a follow-up of the thread highlights with a poll and let people vote for the "best" entry. That'd be fun imo

Note: yeah I know entire teams make these things... let's just look over that for now :)

Naoki Yoshida producing.
Soken composing.
Yoko Taro writing and directing.
The game has a real-time-with-pause or fully real-time battle system.

I don't need to detail more. Taro would do his thing.

Bring back Sakaguchi as the director. Kitase and Ito are on the squad but they don't have the most major roles. Bring in a lot of the Chrono Trigger team, including Toriyama. As much of the SNES staff as they can get. Bring in Toby Fox to help with music and writing.

Octopath Traveler-style visuals. ATB battle system from 4-6. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance's job system. Mostly linear with some diverging paths like 4-9. Set in an alternate reality where it takes place in 2021 but we have magic and swords and shit. Main cast consists of college students, 20somethings, and 30somethings.

Not sure the specifics but I'd love Monolith to contribute to world design. I don't think pure open world supports the linear narrative of FF well, it's all about the story and setpieces taking you places, however I would not like it to be AS corridory as FFXIII (or more broadly VII R) so I think the separate large zones of Xenoblade would work

Flag on the play. Toriyama and Toby Fox are one too many series outsiders!

Unless there's something I don't know about...

I don't really have a preference for designers, I think VII Remake was quite good. Maybe Hiroyuki Ito in a godfather role, and go for a more traditional Final Fantasy with a light hearted and comical tone. I think you really need a palate cleanser after how serious XIII, XV, and XVI look. Story is more character based, rather than lore based. (e.g arbiters of fate, fal'cie) Non human party members.

Caught you before the edit... That'd be interesting as hell, honestly. Super different vibe than what we expect out of FF music.

Sakaguchi produces. Matsuno directs. Ito designs the gameplay. Yoshi P. designs the world and lore. Uematsu composes the OST.

They do whatever the hell they want.

As much as I love Nomura's art, I'd freaking kill to have FF carry half the style and swagger as P5.

I don't know if Soejima is responsible for the menu design, but if he is get him to give FF menus some flavor... They're always so dry...

It's true.

Functional, but only just so. Even using the menu's in P5 feel like they are something fun and special, keeps the mood flowing.

This is my DREAM TEAM. Give me a dark and strange vibe/setting, with the combat of VII Remake and would be my dream game.

Well, I can tell you through grapevine sources galore that Mediking is the director. As for the producer, we're exploring options.

Shotgun being writer if nobody has claimed it yet.

I don't know names, but the BD and Octopath people. Give some retro, turn based charm. MFFGA.

  • Yasumi Matsuno as writer. FF12 and Tactics are just too good in that department.
  • Yasunori Nishiki (from Octopath Traveler) as composer. I mean Uematsu is great but I want to hear more of Nishiki.
  • Tomomi Kobayashi (SaGa) as character designer. Because have you seen her work on SaGa character designs? They're fantastical, colorful, mature, and just overall amazing.
Producer/Director/Gameplay designer is a bit hard for me to recommend someone, they're too complex and abstract of roles for me to have a good idea about.

Producer: Naoki Yoshida. I haven't played any of his games, but he seems to ensure shit gets done

Director: Hidetaka Miyazaki. He's the outsider I'm bringing onto the project. He'll ensure the game has refinement, elegance and dignity

Writer: Yasumi Matsuno. He is the best writer that has ever worked on the series. I'm hoping that the more limited role of writer ensures he doesn't get frustrated and burn out like he did as director on 12

Combat Designer: Ryota Suzuki. The action combat in 16 will have been hugely successful. I'm bringing him on to further refine the action focus in combat

Character Designer. The man, the legend, Tetsuya Nomura

Music: Hitoshi Sakimoto. The 12 soundtrack is SO underappreciated. I'm bringing Sakimoto on to deliver a soundtrack of similar caliber

Setting is post-apocalyptic. 40 years ago, capitalism pushed the crystals powering a cyberpunk world too far, leading to ecological collapse, followed by societal collapse. The decades after the crystals were pushed to their limit, the world was embroiled in a war for resources. But at this point, most people are too exhausted and have given up the will to fight, though some conflicts using remnants of robot weapons technology still continue. The economic elite left for Mars which still has functional crystals. Most people can't afford the trip there, but some desperate people enter indentured servitude to pay for the ticket. You begin the game as one such indentured servant but you get exiled to Earth as punishment for joining a failed general strike

te only project he worked on to completion(if you can ever call a mmo complete) is ff14, but yeah he seems amazing at project planning.

suprised how little Natsuko Ishikawa has come up given she has written one of the best ff stories ever, than again ff14 (shadowbringers) is a mmo and most people here likely havent played it.

I'd love to see what Metal Gear Solid artist Yoji Skinkawa would do with the series.

Kitwe, Zambia.
Keiichi Okabe/Monaca on Music
Tetsuya Nomura/Roberto Ferrari doing characters and art
Whoever the hell did KH3 Re:minds combat system doing combat here
External person: Shinji Yamamoto leading the writing
Producer and director: Whoever SE's most efficient leaders are, so I guess Naoki Yoshida

Urban fantasy setting, less number of enemies(KH game level) but all well designed around your main character's set of tools. One fixed character with highly programmable support party members. Main Character has 3 very different weapons each based on an FF job, swap between them using the Dpad. Gameplay focussed on a combination of exploiting enemy elemental weaknesses and finding unique openings in whiffed attacks.

I will bravely come into this thread to represent the fans of the other side of the FF staff.

Director: Kitase
Co-Director: Toriyama
Writer: Watanabe
Composer: Uematsu
Battle System: Ito

Basically I wanna try to capture that X/X-2 magic again. When FF was easily at its narrative boldest and most exciting. I'd love Kitase to come back and take more of an active role directing, but I don't just wanna kick Toriyama to the curb like a bunch of people, that's why I didn't say producer/director even though that's very similar.

But yeah I want a character driven FF with an emotional story that takes big risks with its themes. If they want to just make X-3 instead they can feel free that's basically the team I'm getting together, just kicking down Nomura and Nojima as the Top Guys.

Battle System wise I'd love something like XIII's level of active turn based but you know what Ito I defer to you you're the king so go nuts do what you want. I'd like it party based and not real time action but otherwise you got free reign again buddy.

I know this will never happen and I'm sad the bulk of this staff is funnelled into 7R for the foreseeable future, they deserve to really stretch their wings again outside of the limits of a pre-existing story.

Okabe Composing
Amano on Cover Art and Main Menu Art
Yoshi P Producing
Nomura on Character Design and Game Direction
Taro on Writing and Co-Director
Nojima on Scenario

All I would say is that it should be like FF X with a darker/more adult story. Like FFX if Taro wrote it, essentially.

Mostly I just really want to see a Final Fantasy with a Sanderson script. xD They would definitely have the budget to bring his ideas to life.

Producer & Director: Naoki Yoshida
Composer: Nobuo Uematsu (guest track by Soken)
Writers: Kazutoyo Maehiro & Natsuko Ishikawa (Heavensward & Shadowbringers)
Lead Game Designer: Kazuhiro Hamatani (FROM / Bloodborne)
Character Designs: Yoshitaka Amano

Setting:
  • High Fantasy
  • focus on magic and crystals
  • very little Magitek technology

Story:
  • Three kingdoms
  • can start the game in any kingdom
  • first half of story will be different for every kingdom
  • second half follows a shared storyline (think FFXI)
  • Full CG cutscenes (ignore that this kind of goes against my "create a character" point...)

World:
  • Semi-open world with a huge variety of biomes (jungle, plains, desert, snow, beach, swamp, caves, etc.)
  • enemy bastions (good and evil)
  • rare monsters
  • Goblin design from FFXI (this is a must!)

Gameplay:
  • Create a character (optional, no strong feelings here)
  • job system with branching skill trees
  • jobs have their own story chain to unlock special abilities or job specific gear
  • real time action gameplay
  • party members can be recruited
  • can set jobs of party members
  • party can be controlled via gambits or manually
  • interesting loot system (think PSO but less grindy)
  • optional online coop
  • randomized world events (big threats, city attacks, enemy bastion raids)
  • big DLC expansions
