I hope the Guardians of the Galaxy game is basically a more lighthearted Mass Effect. Flying around in the ship, custom squad, mix of action and exploration, some side quests. That structure is basically perfect for the property, imo.

Knowing Eidos Interactive/Square Enix Europe, they'll find a way to fuck it up.

Thanks mod!

New poll is up. Inspired by the recent Origin leak.

For posterity:

Only someone who hasn't played XI could be surprised at the love for Vana'diel. It's a wonderful world with rich world-building and a ton left to explore.
Or maybe I just find it strange that people wouldn't be more interested in seeing worlds from single-player games that haven't got expanded on through multiple expansions revisited or something. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ivalice isn't even a proper setting, or rather it's several extremely different settings with inconsistent lore. Really it's just a brand for Matsuno games. Plus we've had more Ivalice games than every other FF world except VII. So yeah I'm good giving it a rest.

It's had quite a rest. The last major game set in the OG Ivalice universe came out in 2008.

They mention in X that Spira has relatively small towns in fear of sin. It'd be nice to see a fully realized Spira during the eternal calm

"Inconsistent lore" is pretty much the real proper way to do lore though. The history of Ivalice spans thousands of years, it makes sense that old tales and names get distorted along the way. It makes the world feel more "lived in".

Unlike more cliche game stories where all legends are somehow 100% facts.

I'd argue that it's because of that incomplete perspective and vast unknowns that Ivalice would make a prime target for revisiting, even more so because it has two totally distinct settings in-universe separated by millennia. (Tactics' more grounded medieval setting, and XII's diverse and advanced golden age.)

Vana'diel is similar in that respect, with multiple unexplored continents with tantalizing lore. Obviously that would be more ideally suited to further expansions... but SE seems reluctant to invest that much despite XI's continued life and popularity.

Most other FF settings on the OP's poll, we've explored the entire world. That was an advantage of scope that older entries had, but it also stymied the need or desire for sequels to their settings (by design, considering FF purposefully never did direct sequels prior to X-2). That's not to say that there couldn't be cool new stories set in the World of Balance, Gaia, Spira, etc., but frankly they don't have the more extensive existing lore and unexplored areas of Ivalice or Vana'diel, so why not just go to a new setting, since we've seen everything (at least as it was)?

That's an extremely bad excuse for poor writing, which is another feature of Ivalice games.

Honestly, it's not really about the amount of time it has been since the last time we've seen that world but more about how much of that world we've already seen. Let other settings have their moment too.

That's fair. I generally agree with what Disclaimer just said about earlier worlds, but I voted FFVI for one of my picks. :P

That's where I'm at. Don't get me wrong, I like Ivalice, Tactics remains one of my favourites in the franchise and I really like the world of XII (minus everyone being white in the middle eastern inspired country), we've visited and revisited that world (and the XIV variant) many times.

Heck, we're still getting Ivalice stories; Return to Ivalice and Bozja, from Final Fantasy XIV, both not only feature elements from the Ivalice games but actually seem to be building up to a story featuring a certain character from them, as well as all being written by Matsuno.

I get why Ivalice is what people jump to, tho. It captures the imagination like little others, being one of the first FF settings to feature "lore" to "solve".

It's had quite a rest. The last major game set in the OG Ivalice universe came out in 2008.
Eh, like I said, XIV has been featuring new plots related to Ivalice for a couple of years now, and has an ongoing story in that style.

Uh, what? Good writing that captivates the imagination is an excuse for poor writing?

We must have wildly diverging ideas of what constitutes "poor writing." There's things to criticize, as with most other games, but by and large they're very thematically compelling with deeply realized characters and settings.

And Ivalice's lore is usually pretty consistent, all things considered. We can piece together a vague but non-contradictory timeline from where XII ends and Tactics begins.

Ivalice is not a world or a specific place, it is an idea. Much like the idea of an Israel. In different times it means different specific things to different people, and the consistency is what the idea itself is. There is the concrete Israel of today we understand and can see and experience and react to. There is also the historical Israel (a fallen kingdom, a scattered people, a vessel-state to empires, etc), the religious Israel (a promised land for a promised people), and a psychological Israel (the imagined homeland that bonded the Jewish diaspora through the centuries). I feel Ivalice is like that.

God I really hope we get a decent FF1-6 collection. SE you can charge me whatever the fuck you like as long as they're all FF4 PSP quality.

Now that we see they're willing to do HD-2D for other games, I wonder if we'll see them tackle old FF games with it? This seems like a perfect way to do a FFVI remake since there's no way they'll invest a VIIR budget into it.
Asano expressly doesn't want to go back to FF again (after FF3/4 DS and Gaiden). I feel like DQ is something of a special exception for his team given none of their new stuff really hits similar notes in the way Bravely (FF), Octopath (SaGa) and Triangle Strategy (FFT/Ogre) do. If Asano Team even does another HD-2D remake after DQIII it'll probably just be DQI+II.

Merging BD 6 and 11 is starting to make a lot more sense now.
Thanks, will keep that in mind!
I mean, it's sort of just returning to where they started and reforming the "Enix" production group. BD7 too. It always made sense with the BD consolidation into four CBUs.

Definitely Spira. It's more relevant than ever these days and there really has been nothing like it since its release. Give me a X remake or X-3 cowards!

I hope at their conference they finally confirm the platforms DQXII and DQIII Remake are releasing on... and don't drag this any further.

Hope they release on all Platforms and PC.

DQ is pretty firmly multiplat now. Even if not day 1 I expect everything to end up on mostly everything.

My only concern is if DQX Offline makes it overseas or not.

I didn't realise Guardians of the Galaxy on Switch was a Cloud version. I assumed with the Switch Pro coming up, then we'd be able to see PS4 gen ports on the system...but I guess the base console will continue to hold things like that back from happening.
