Yeah, Jonathan seems like he isn't really fit for the job he's currently in, he's interesting for commenting trailers and news (even though he's always the less prepared of the crew and tend to give very uninformed takes) but doesn't seem to be fit for reviewing. I normally just ignore his reviews altogether

Yeah, even the KH community was excited because we thought he was a good KH player. After his ReMind review a lot of people changed their minds. We thought he was the last decent one from IGN but lol

I love Spongebob but I have no nostalgia for this game, and I've only played a little bit of the Gamecube version via Dolphin prior to playing the Steam version. Some thoughts:
  • Lack of configuration options is disappointing. Not sure what the situation is like if you're playing on KBM but no controller remapping as far as I can tell, and having no real graphical options outside of resolution is laughable. PCGamingWiki apparently says you can tweak stuff like anti-aliasing in the game files but not sure why it wasn't possible to at least add some basic settings like alter texture quality and the like, hard to gauge how resource intensive this game actually is.
  • Framerate seems to stick to a steady 60fps on my end (i5 8300H, 1050 Ti, 8GB RAM). A little chunky at first during the pineapple cutscene and then the cut to gameplay but haven't encountered any problems since. Anyone with a decent rig should be able to run this no problem.
  • Weird to see Spongebob in HD graphics, considering how I haven't paid attention to any recent Spongebob game releases. Not sure if it really does anything for me relative to the OG graphics but it looks pretty much like how I'd expect a Spongebob game to look today, and I guess the environments look nice, even if I'm not sure the characters really work out in 3D. Enough technical stuff on show to look impressive by the standards of a licensed video game. Some pop-in and texture streaming but that's just a quirk of the Unreal Engine, and more of an observation than a complaint.
  • Loading times are fairly snappy considering I'm running this game off a 5400 RPM HDD (sorry Spongebob, RDR2 took up most of my SSD space). Some weird instances where the whole "hand grabbing player out of bounds" animation doesn't quite align with the player. Doesn't really affect playability but looks janky.
  • Music is decent, remastered well and sounds like it comes out of Spongebob. A little repetitive though.
  • Encountered some weird glitch with Sandy in Downtown Bikini Bottom where I was hovering indefinitely (and when I jumped I flew to the top of the skybox). Teleporting fixed this.
  • Story is fairlly lightweight, I can live with Clancy Brown not voicing Mr Krabs, but as a fan of the older seasons it doesn't really give me any nostalgia for them. If I wanted old Spongebob I'd watch old Spongebob. I was amused though by hearing Patrick and Sandy comment on wearing Spongebob's underwear.
  • Game itself actually holds up pretty well. Controls well, and the game's mechanics and level design are engaging enough for me to keep going. A little heavy on the textboxes and signposts to explain the mechanics for my taste, but given the target demographic I understand the "tell, not show," approach used here. It's not the greatest game in the world and it's not necessarily as tightly designed as I would like, but it certainly leaves a much better taste in my mouth than playing through Banjo Kazooie or A Hat in Time.
So far, 7/10. It's a decent enough PS2 era platformer that won't blow your socks off but fundamentally the ingredients for a solid collectahon are all here. 3D platformers aren't as big as a genre on PC as I'd like, and there is a novelty to having an Spongebob game on Steam, and a remake of a game that never technically hit PC (the original BFBB on PC was completely different to the console ones). I can't speak for if it's as good as the original or if it'll hold up against a person with a much deeper understanding the original, but it's worth checking out if you enjoy 3D platformers and at the very least, the game's held up enough to adequately entertain younger kids in 2020, just as well as it did in 2003.

Really enjoying the game while simultaneously shaking my head at what a buggy mess it is. I have experienced:
1. Did a slide challenge for a golden spatula in Rock Bottom. I succeeded and went to grab the spatula, but it had no hitbox and I walked right through it. Restarted the challenge and it now fails to appear, and when I talk to Mr Krabs, he congratulates me for finishing the challenge even though I didn;t.
2. Died and the game respawned me under the floor.
3. Grabbed a golden spatula and after the celebratory animation, I could not move Spongebob, he was stuck dancing in place.

I am not the only one with that Rock Bottom glitch, youtube comments on a walkthrough show multiple people saying "I thought it was just me".

Damn, I am really liking the game itself but the Switch version is a mess the further you get in. The framerate in some levels like the Goo Lagoon carnival and the one with the sand slopes goes into single digits once you turn the camera, and the image quality itself looks really ugly most of the time with jaggies on everything you see on screen. The controls themselves are messed up too, with the issue some people mentioned already about SpongeBob tip-toeing all the time instead of going at his normal speed for no reason.

I assume I'm more than halfway through the game and really want to keep playing until the end, but I might just wait a few weeks for a patch or something.

Since the egs had a pretty good deal and the switch version i brought is kind of a mess, i decided to take the pc version with a double dip. The game looks and plays much better, it's almost night and day.

I'm really enjoying the game on Xbox One X. Looks beautiful and is pure fun <3

I'm a huge platformer & collectathon fan and so far I don't have much to complain. Wish the game had PT-BR voices, but other than that, it's exactly what I expected haha

No word on if it's going to fix any Switch-specific issues but they are already working on another patch.

Done platinuming it on PS4. Didn't have much if any technical problems on the last half of the game. Still enjoyed it a lot minus the small grind for Mr. Krabs.

Yeah, I played more today because TLOU2 is for when the kids go to bed, and it's a solid game. It looks and runs well on XB1X. It's not broken in any major way that I can see, so the 2/10 seems unjustified to me.
What I felt was that at times its timeframe hurt it more than other remakes, + its genre type, and you could also throw its just general level structure in there as well. What you have is a game that, I feel technically looks pretty damned awesome, but on many fronts feels ancient. I get that a lot of people say well "its a remaster" sure. But many times the reviewer isn't the same person who reviewed the original or wasn't even gaming at that time(depending on age) or so many other reasons. For me it feels a bit basic and just overall slow and that does get out into the gameplay and makes it feel a particular way. Is that worth a 2. Fuck no

Completely agree. It's definitely a product of its time with a new coat of paint, but I consider a 2 to be a game which is fundamentally broken and damn near unplayable in all regards.

Your last podcast was awesome, btw.

I got to start the game last night and enjoyed it, but the character movement speed seems a bit too slow.

Game's been a blast so far. It's also on Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam. User scores on Metacritic are also very high. What a differnce between critics vs users reviews.

Bought the PS4 version today. Can't wait to try it out, played the original on the Xbox as a kid but never finished it.

color palette is too saturated, just like the reignited trilogy

I don't get that IGN or Gamespot review, maybe find someone to review the game who is competent at platformers or who doesn't expect modern AAA gameplay mechanics from a faithful remake?

Incredibly frustrating to see good games get panned just because they "feel old"

And that reviewer is here:

Playing through Jellyfish Fields and I still think the controls are pretty damn solid. Blows my mind how you can give this 2/10.

Not something I would buy at launch, but i know the original had a cult following, so it's definitely something I'll grab down the road.

I picked it up for my son and we've been playing together, I do a lot of the more difficult parts. It's pretty good and a lot of fun! Not sure what's with some of the negative reviews.

Only part I hated so far was the Sea Needle part, where you hang off a fish hook and try to smash boxes while you bounce up and down. Was not fun.

Finished the game today with around 84 spatulas and I enjoyed my time with it. I never played the game back when it was new nor did I ever watch spongebob so I have no nostalgia for the game or property; I am however a fan of 3d platformers and always heard good things about this game so I gave it a shot. Did the game blow me away? no but I never expected it to either. I expected something along the line of a solid 7/10 3d platformer that someone who enjoys the genre can have some fun with and that seems to be what I got.

I picked it up on PS4 Pro as something I can play when the kiddos are around. I'm a huge platformer fan and I had no idea this game was beloved. I always assumed it was licensed trash back in 2003. So I grabbed this version to see what I've been missing.

I am very much enjoying it. Aside from the crappy load times when you get out-of-bounds or die, it's a really enjoyable 3D platformer. The modern touch-ups make it look and feel pretty good to play. The mechanics do not feel too dated to me, which is nice seeing as the game is quite faithful from what I hear and it's 17 years old.

THQ Nordic holds AMA on imageboard known for child porn

Is there something you'd like to get off your chest? A few days ago, you went out of your way to quote me, and only me, in the Dell monitor thread, and now you've done the very same thing in this thread.

Perhaps I'm being ignorantly naive or myopic, but I think there's some degree of nuance between buying a general consumer product and wholly supporting slave labour or the signal-boosting of ought-to-be-illegal, right-wing hellholes, and while I don't at all begrudge those who feel differently, the fact you're using my posts as a springboard makes your stance feel particularly personal.

The good thing is, Spongebob has a meme ready for everything. Like the Gamespot reviewer trying to solve the ball puzzle:
