See the speech. Modi's government (BJP) is right-wing, Hindu nationalist teetering on fascism. Muslims are being lynched by Cow Vigilantes. Just last week one was killed, another was thrown off a moving train and another one (a mosque imam) was beaten up. History books are being rewritten and propoganda is everywhere on TV.
Are we really going to listen to TMC on fascism and violence? That is how they have ruled West Bengal these years.

How did things end up this way? The absolute domination of Hindus and minority statuses of muslims is terrifying in a place as corrupt and underdeveloped as India

Every religion is treated fair and square. That being said you might come across one or two incidents, but of course just like the OP and Media will like to blow things out of proportion and make it sound like India's current PM and his administration is taking India towards doomsday shit. No one's buying it!

I'm pretty sure dozens of people have been lynched by cow vigilantes and that's not even taking the newest Jai Shri Ram attacks into account as well as the dehumanising of Muslims to the point where a 8yo girl was raped and murdered by a police officer and former judge.
I highly recommend everyone watch 'The hour of Lynching' to see the kinds of rhetoric being thrown around by Hindi nationalist extremists.
Watch Hasan Minhaj's episode on Indian Elections to get a sense of where things are. There's a lot of things. The opposition party Congress was mired in corruption and scandals, and they don't have anyone inspiring and uniting like the last PM Manmohan Singh. Rahul Gandhi is uninspiring, lackluster and generally not liked by public. Modi promised end to corruption and also played on nationalist and religious sentiments of Hindu majority. The current BJP is Modi's ruling party, and it openly declares itself a right-wing party. The situation is not too dissimilar from that of Trump and white nationalism in US, including the fascist undertones, calling media fake news/enemy of the people and treating anyone who disagrees with suspicion. Not to mention, the supporters are the same cultist types and believe India is a glowing shiny house on a hill.
What in the flying fuck? Modi's administration is defined by Hindu nationalism. It's the fundamental ideology of their party.
It'd be like saying Republicans are a pro-immigration party.

Sucks that she belongs to the TMC, a party of goons who go around hacking opponents to death and who run the country on bribes and getting paid to allow folks to run businesses.
The head of the party she belongs to calls Hindus outsiders in West Bengal, threatened to arrest and kick out doctors protesting for more security by calling them outsiders/BJP guys and has arrested and put people into jail for criticizing her government. No freedom of speech and the threat of being thrown in jail if anyone angers the chief minister.
So while all this is nice, her own party is pretty shit as well and she should probably dispense some of this advice to her own leader.
I wish the communists/left party came back to power in West Bengal.

Can you post the actual speech please? Just posting a twitter video is poor form, especially if you're going to post a whole thread about it!
A lot of us can't watch/hear video, but would still like to discuss.
I assume that this speech was for international consumption or is it normal for parliamentary debates to be given in English?
English and Hindi are official languages in India and a lot of Indians don't know Hindi especially in the south. One can give these talks in their local language, Hindi or English and it will be translated accordingly like in the UN.
What a horrible take. A small example: years before he even became a Prime Minister, he was banned from travelling to USA because of his complicity in the riots in his state where mostly muslims were killed. And this was before his whole "hindutva" policy (a policy of hindu nationalist).
With Muslims being only 1/7 of the population.
So Muslims weren't wholesale massacred in Gujarat, the Bombay riots never occurred, and Sikhs weren't massacred in 84? Gee, someone should tell the historians about this.
