Console manufacturers have long realized that making bank on hardware is minuscule compared to reoccurring revenues like PSN+ and cuts from game sales and whatnot.

I can see them selling it at manufacturer cost or even slightly below that. It'll become much cheaper in the near future, so market penetration is a lot more important than earning a small amount of money from the sale itself.

Canadian Dollar has taken a dive in the past month. COVID19 has wrecked havok on exchange rates. No way they've decided a Canadian price yet.

lol that source. this doesn't even count as a rumor, it's just a local retailer making up a price so they can take orders,

There's generally been around $100 price discrepancy between USD and CAD to account for currency rates and import tariffs. No way it'll be CAD 600 unless USD is closer to 500.

Lots of retailers have place-holder pricing. With that said, with both Sony and Microsoft having alternative revenue streams in their console business, they can launch these machines at $399 or cheaper if they can attach their subscription services to the machines.

It's simple business. I can charge $.99 for a burger but charge $2.00 for drinks and make my money back and then some. Game Pass Ultimate is a damn near must buy. With a 24 month subscription they could sell the Series X for $300 and still make money.

399 $/€ was always the soft spot.
They know it, 399 for a naked sku and make it so a single game and a year of ps+ are enough to cover the loss, just like they did with the ps4, win.

Remember that Switch had a lot of retailers using 250 as a placeholder

Very cheap would $300. $400 is within the expected ballpark, wouldn't call it very cheap.

News like this is pretty dangerous.

Remember when the Switch was rumoured to be 199.99 but later revealed to be 299.99 which made it sound really expensive because everyone was so used to the 'insider news price'?

They've lost the specs battle pretty hard and the series s loses them the price battle. Feels like 399 would be a hail Mary to get some momentum

Wasn't this what everybody assumed after the specs reveal? PS5 = $399 and XSX = $499? Lockhart = $299?

Not sure I believe the source but if it does end up coming in at $600 Canadian, that would actually be pretty good.

I mean it's a lot of money but could be much worse. I'm horrified what Series X is going to run Canadians. Like $800+??

Yes, the market leader using the same pricing they've used for their last two consoles would be a desperate Hail Mary in the face of *checks notes* coming 15% behind on flops.

That's not /cheap /

But affordable enough to be a mass product which is in their best interests

I still think Scarlett could undercut their price

There is no way in hell the PS5 is $399 lol, the thing is a very powerful machine. Even $450 is a stretch
