HDMI-VRR is an HDMI standard, not "open source" or anything Sony are developing themselves.
"G-Sync Compatible" is branding which certifies that a device's implementation of HDMI-VRR passes NVIDIA's quality standards.
FreeSync-over-HDMI or "FreeSync" is its own thing and must be licensed from AMD.

blast, is no free sync over HDMI 100% from PS5? I was hoping. Hopefully my 2.0 display supports HDMI-VRR.

The XSX/XSS being 40GBPS instead of 48GBPS I can understand since it can still do 4:4:4 4K @ 120hz in HDR with that much bandwidth

The PS5 limiting to 32GBPS is very puzzling, but I suppose they're not trying to be a 4K 120hz gaming machine (They don't even let you set 120hz in the OS). I wonder if it can be firmware patched to go up to 40GBPS the same way they might add support for VRR and 1440p. For now it's a dissapointing limitation but at least will still be enough for 4:4:4 12bit 4K @ 60hz

In short:

If you ar eon the highest end (120 or 8k), you could see a difference in picture quality if you use a high quality display.
Will this be irrelevant for 95% of users? Jep.
Did they cheap out? absolutely.

I wouldn't say cheap out as they literally have the required chipsets for the full bandwidth so most likely it's a firmware thing

We don't tag people who are insiders. Only people who want to be publicly known as far as what they do and who they work for.

Is there any risk in inventing a new label for these individuals? It may facilitate discussion to be able to recognize people that aren't just bullshitting. If some of the community already recognize him some new label might help things out.

So I took screenshots, and after the explanations I received, it looks like I was mistaking the changes that were made to facilitate 120 Hz mode as symptoms of the color differences.

I don't like the way the 120 model looks and prefer the other one.

Yep I see that. I have a Sony Bravia 940E.
AppleTv outputs 4:4:4 4K/60hz/hdr just fine.
No manner of setting seems to get PS5 to play nice.

Not for 10bit content (HDR) , that's not possible ,as that would exceed the bandwidth hdmi 2.0.

You could do that at 8bit, but your HDR content will take a quality hit as that's 1/4 of the colour information of 10bit.

Also doesn't support 8K right now even though on the box it says it does right? I'm sure they will update the firmware at some point

Always hate these weird hardware quirks that we have to hope they fix while they also never acknowledge the issue.

32Gbps cap on PS5, no true blacks on XSX.

Consoles output at 60hz, and 120hz this gen as well. So the 8K support wont be at 30 or 24.
