Seriously, now there is a counter culture to protect the leaker over the devs themselves.Wow some people really think this is just about games not the, damage, stress, and harassment devs are getting or the constant bullshit news being made.

How?
The leaks have likely created losses in the millions range. Good luck to whomever leaked it.
So there should be no consequences for doing things to damage or deface something in anyway?
There are potential consequences beyond just harassment. Depending on if this causes losses in revenue, it could be pay or even job cuts.
That bottom line can affect jobs at the bottom. They got paid. It sucks that some people won't be able to experience the game the way they intended but at the end of the day we are talking about video games here. The only thing impacted might be the bottom line of a billion dollar company.
I'm guessing he's assuming that people that got spoiled might not buy the game, which makes no sense, and that the alt-right trolls that won't buy the game because of the apparent "SJW themes" are an actually big part of the fan base.
Where did I say bankrupt or public exposure?I'm worried that you're thinking of "bankruptcy and public exposure" is a minimum punishment. Can you really not think of anything in between that and "literally no consequences"?
It's not on Sony, they didn't leak the game. That's on Sony. I very much doubt the leak will do any damage to the sales anyways but whatever floats your boat.
Do you have a source for this information? Who exactly told you this, and what is their position or role? I just find it hard to believe Sony would leave these sorts of files completely unsecured as you're claiming.
So this user is already back to pushing fake news? Shouldn't the mods do something about this?
It's pretty easy to explain why on Monday I thought it was one thing then now I know it's another thing. I asked around someone told me what actually happened, and I see that almost everyone was incorrect because didn't this start on 4Chan? I'm pretty sure the disgruntled employee thing was literally something they made up to mask where it came from. ERA sorta likes to run with things, doesn't anyone remember the smash leaks? The Grinch/Smash Leak? ERA Loves to hang on something and really drag along and people will contribute misinformation pretty damn quickly. And who told you this exactly?
Considering all the other nonsense that has come out in the last week that have come out with no source, posting something with a "just what I was told" doesn't seem good enough to me.
I hope they identify that arsehole publicly and make him go bankrupt.
I too wish for people to suffer immense harm and potentially die over video game spoilers.
Naughty Dog devs have already been harassed, and there are bigger potential consequences from the leaks.
So there should be no consequences for doing things to damage or deface something in anyway?
The game is going to break all kinds of sales records, no one is getting a pay cut.
The reproduction right is perhaps the most important right granted by the Copyright Act. Under this right, no one other than the copyright owner may make any reproductions or copies of the work. Examples of unauthorized acts which are prohibited under this right include photocopying a book, copying a computer software program, using a cartoon character on a t-shirt, and incorporating a portion of another's song into a new song.
It is not necessary that the entire original work be copied for an infringement of the reproduction right to occur. All that is necessary is that the copying be "substantial and material."
The distribution right grants to the copyright holder the exclusive right to make a work available to the public by sale, rental, lease, or lending. This right allows the copyright holder to prevent the distribution of unauthorized copies of a work. In addition, the right allows the copyright holder to control the first distribution of a particular authorized copy. However, the distribution right is limited by the "first sale doctrine", which states that after the first sale or distribution of a copy, the copyright holder can no longer control what happens to that copy. Thus, after a book has been purchased at a book store (the first sale of a copy), the copyright holder has no say over how that copy is further distributed. Thus, the book could be rented or resold without the permission of the copyright holder.
Congress has enacted several limitations to the first sale doctrine, including a prohibition on the rental of software and phonorecords.
Oddly, I was informed of something similar as well.Basically.
Each and every ND game that gets patch updates a key from a server after it gets patched, and that server gives you and millions of other people keys to look at that server. That server did not have any authentication what so ever. As far as I was told once you gave it the key that you had gotten it literally just opened the doors, and where do you think the copy of the game that leaked was :P
Thanks!
Looks like they have a massively insecure infrastructure then, which isn't that surprising given the state of PSN I guess, but still.
Doesn't seem like they can do a trial out of this tbh.
I hate this entire situation. The fact people are gleeful about spoiling others is sick. Even if you hate the game let others experience and react for themselves.
The leaker should face some punishment but I don't know if he can be charged for theft or if ND will just take the blame.
That sucks and I'm sorry to hear you might have been spoiled.
I know people who read a spoiler get tempted to spoil everything but I recommend you don't and if you would like I can confirm(privately because I don't want anyone spoiled) some questions so you don't need to go in the spoiler thread and ruin more.
This applies to anyone else who might have been spoiled by something.
These are not normal times. In a normal situation, Sony and ND are not trying to complete projects while their entire development team is working remotely. Not only that.
Besides finding it hard to believe that sony, who has been publishing games forever, and ND who have been developing games forever, would store keys in an unsecure server, especially for one of their most important games.
The information in that post is very specific.
He would have to have close ties with a leaker to know something like that.
So I think verification to that post would be required I think.

Sony will make sure the leakers are ashamed of their words and deeds.
There's probably multiple laws, but it definitely violates the Copyright Act.
It won't. Plenty of people spoiled Avengers Endgame for others as soon as they could and it still became the highest grossing film of all time. Getting spoiled pisses people off, but it won't stop them from playing the game if they were interested.Riiiight. Because this will definitely impact sales in a material way and bankrupt ND.
Some people here, I swear...

Didn't the sword and shield leaker get in trouble? And the esrb leaker from smash 3ds.I don't actually expect a whole lot as far as 'punishment' or 'consequences'.
Has there been any precedent on the legal aftermath of similar events? I don't mean where customer personal data was leaked, or even a full on hack/breach of company materials. I mean something like "someone got code and leaked it but it was due to "sloppy" handling of said code."
Like, what happened in the Deus Ex HR leak?
What was the final punishment for the dudes that hacked Valve for HL2 code?
Its clearly not going to bankrupt ND but it could impact sales enough that bonuses are affected.
What happened to them ?Didn't the sword and shield leaker get in trouble? And the esrb leaker from smash 3ds.
Nope, not a single clue who did it.
I'll try to verify the information with a mod as soon as I can. I gotta stress this enough was not Sony's fault TLOU2 was leaked, This is on ND to blame. Even Sony has said. It's literally not an employee that they have hired. Contracted or not.
It's pretty easy to explain why on Monday I thought it was one thing then now I know it's another thing.

Exactly my point.
Yes, it is an extremely shitty thing to do to spoil the game for a huge amount of people.
Sure, some punishment is definitely in order, if only to make sure it won't happen again.
But this thread is chock full of terrible takes.
And it's not going to impact the profits, not really.
I didn't say forced, but if there is loss in revenue due to the leaks and it caused something, that is a consequence. No it couldn't. It's hilarious how this is even brought into discussion.
Firing their employees absolutely is on them. Are you saying they are forced to fire them if the game sales take a hit?

Can't wait for the mod to verify you too.
Even with the pandemic there is some things that every developer knows to do, especially AAA devs. That includes having keys in a secure server. That would be a huge huge mistake that even small indie devs know to double check .These are not normal times. In a normal situation, Sony and ND are not trying to complete projects while their entire development team is working remotely.
I'm a nurse. I know more than you ever will. Every day I go to work expecting for the day that I caught it.
Oh oops, didn't notice that that was sarcasm. Sorry about that. I've seen people legitimately try to make that point way too often.Exactly my point.

Kotaku got confirmation the folk(s) involved have never worked for Sony or ND.

This is a video game enthusiast forum.
With it's members apparently being very knowledgeable about video games.
And people think those leaks will cost the developer millions of sales.
Wow.
Y'all really doin the most huhHark Sony, hark!
Bellow, bid our father the Yoshida rise from the depths full foul in his fury! Black waves teeming with salt foam to smother this leaking mouth with pungent financial demands, to bankrupt ye, engorging your acounts til' ye turn blue and bloated with bilge and brine and can pay no more
Only when he, crowned in lawsuit shells with slitherin' payout tails and steaming litigation take up his fell be-suited arm, his legal-tine trident screeches banshee-like in the tempest and plunges right through yer gullet, bursting ye -- a leaking bladder no more, but a blasted bloody film now and nothing for the trolls and the souls of false insiders to peck and claw and feed upon only to be lapped up and swallowed by the infinite teraflops of the Playstation Emperor himself
Forgotten to any man, to any time, forgotten to any god or devil, forgotten even to the internet, for any stuff for part of the TLoU2 leaker, even any scantling of their soul is a leaker no more, but is now itself the internet!
