As someone who used to walk several blocks just to play Sonic on a Genesis Kiosk at my local video rental store, and then got a Genesis for Xmas that same year, I say more power to him.
What's odd is I have not seen any new Sonic merch to go along with this. Where is the new Sonic movie plush?
I'm sure that didn't help, but I think Sonic looked more appealing to kids and families in the post-redesign trailers than Detective Pikachu ever did.Definitely, I think Detective Pikachu released a couple weeks after Endgame
The fish out of water storyline helps it a lot I think. I don't think Detective Pikachu's plot is impenetrable to any newbies, but it does seem to assume its audience has at least a basic knowledge of the Pokemon universe.I'm sure that didn't help, but I think Sonic looked more appealing to kids and families in the post-redesign trailers than Detective Pikachu ever did.

I hope its success goes sky-high and beyond, all the way to Saturn.
I haven't seen it but I believe you'd be fine doing that.
Not even half that

Rad. Ooc does your 4 year old play any games? Thinking it's time to get my kiddo gently into the hobbyI took my 4 year old to see it and she enjoyed it just fine. Theres some punching and someone gets called a jerk but nothing more extreme than that.
Merchandise takes awhile to design and manufacture, so they basically had to start from scratch with the redesign. The stuff on shelves now are mostly stuff they could repaint to still work with the new design. What's odd is I have not seen any new Sonic merch to go along with this. You mean like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings?Video Game Movie
Comic book movie
Why isn't Book Movies a genre yet? We seem to be at that point in hte idiocracy, no?
I think they mean why we don't call those films Book Movies.

I feel like Sonic fans have the unhinged edge, whereas Pokémon fans are more gatekeepey obsessivenessSonic fans would never pull off what Pokémon fans did with the Pokédex nonsense.
I think it's because comic book or video game movies tend to be genre fiction, while books run the gamut.Video Game Movie

Be patient, this SEGA Cinematic Universe is gonna write itself. Once we get to Crazy Taxi: Civil War they'll bridge the gap between all the franchises and be pumping out hit after hit Marvel style.
Let's not get hyperbolic with that "great" nowIf you had told me from three months ago that the last Star Wars movie would be a massive disappointment but that we'd get a great Sonic the Hedgehog movie, I'd have called you crazy.
Here we are.
That's because if Sega cut 50% of the cast, the fanbase would be like, "please cut more".Sonic fans would never pull off what Pokémon fans did with the Pokédex nonsense.
It's not the first time, and sadly, it won't be the last. Maybe they'll beg them to come back for the sequel.Well, I guess all those animators weren't overworked, underpaid and then fired for nothing.

get a regular sonic plushy, wash it on a spin cycle for a whole day, stick it under the seat cushion of a skid row dumpster couch for three months in August, retrieve it and enjoy your extremely limited edition "pre-movie fan reaction revamp Sonic"
I'll take this movie being rated fresh by Rotten Tomatoes as a "victory" for the brand, but I also cant call the film legitimately great. I enjoyed it and am really pulling for a sequel that is more faithful to the subject matter and/or just more whimsical in general, but at the end of the day it really wasn't anything special.
I really wonder if the release date helped out Sonic a ton and hindered Pikachu.
Inaccurate. You forgot the part where you steal your grandma's dentures (from her coffin) and pop them in the plush.
