He was joking. There was an avatar bet last year about Detective Pikachu making $1b.
It didn't even get half of that.
I'm pretty sure that's because sonic fans go in with the lowest of low expectations after 25 years of bullshit.

I will say this, my 3 y/o already knows Sonic and his iconic theme song from genesis.
He doesn't have a clue who Pikachu is. The Sonic brand is strong.

That's because for Sonic fans a game that runs properly is already an absolute win, they don't have time to think about cut content. Poor Bastards deserve this W.
It absolutely helped Sonic. There's no competition for a few more weeks, and there hasn't been a kids film since Christmas. Families were looking for anything to see, and it helps that Sonic has been getting decent reviews and good word of mouth. If it had kept it's original release date in November it would have had no chance.
Detective Pikachu is more debatable, but probable that it's release date hurt it a bit.
I believe the Sonic dreams collection is was brought Sonic back into the spot light and deserves all the credit
Sonic fans still have to go all out on harassing the devs so I'm not sure about that one...
I hope its success goes sky-high and beyond, all the way to Saturn.
