For those too young to remember, back in the 90's, they discovered a protein and named it after Sonic the Hedgehog:

Sonic hedgehog is a key protein in developmental biology, so it's not terribly surprising that it pops up from time to time in the news.

Fly geneticists named a class of proteins "hedgehog" because when they mutated the genes responsible for their production in flies, the insects adopted a spiky appearance. As the wiki article references, there are other hedgehog proteins such as indian and desert.

Also, people who complain can shove it. I bet if you guys discovered anything you'd name it after some boring-ass Greek or Latin shit so it sounds like you're LARPing a magical incantation every time you describe a biochemical pathway.

Hedgehog proteins are actually quite important in development as mutations in them can cause major limb malformations and whatnot. I think someone mentioned it earlier.
