We had a thread here where tons of people sided with someone harassing Daisy Ridley in her private life just because they didn't like TLJ. So this was bound to happen sadly.

When Disney announced the acquisition of LF and their plans for a new trilogy, this was honestly the last outcome I expected. Maybe I'll love the new movies, maybe I'll hate the new movies; now I hate all of you instead.

I'd be fine with banning discussion of Star Wars. I love the series overall even if I think its hugely flawed. But every thread even on here is garbage. When the next film comes out, I don't care if you think its good or bad, who is raping your childhoods, how Rian Johnson affected you, who Sheev or Queev really is, what couples should have gotten together, fuck it all, watch it or don't.

If you are a woman, a PoC or Queer and you have the temerity to publicly enjoy TLJ you are very likely to be harassed, abused and potentially doxxed.

Not trying to defend these fucking shit people at all, but maybe don't live tweet your reactions and just enjoy the movies. Because Twitter is a cesspool of fucking wretches. People should expect this by now and not be concerned with it, or just not use the garbage. Oh wait...Twitter doesn't give a fuck. And most likely never will. They've proven time and time again that they not only will let this stuff slide on a constant basis, but many times they even take it's side.
There's no "fixing" Twitter, and I don't even know why anyone would want to. It has very clearly demonstrated since the beginning that it is no better than any other community that fosters bigotry and hate. Don't use it. And if you do, unfortunately, expect this shit. It is what it is, and it is what it has been is for like half a decade now.

It isn't a twitter problem and dismissing it as this is dismissing the sexism, racism, and harassment issue in Star Wars fandom against those who aren't white males who like current Star Wars. It's a real problem. It's not "oh that's internet social media".
Here is the thing. People don't harass everyone who likes Endgame or Captain Marvel or whatever other Marvel movie on Twitter. But if you are a woman or POC who likes modern Star Wars it's almost a forgone conclusion you are going to get harassed, mocked, or doxxed. How is that fair?
This trashing of everything new and progressive, and I hate using the word in this context, as an SJW agenda is really bumming me out across multiple media properties. I think it's perfectly fine for creators to try and explore new things and you can still make light fun of it if you think it creators or corporations go too far somehow. But the viciousness with which people are attacked is pissing me off. It's like another aspect of life and the world where the clock is being turned back a couple of decades.
I think studios and creators need to be bolder in getting more protective and giving a big, wide ranging "f... off and don't watch" to those people.

I saw a lot of people on that Reddit thread (in the OP) also deflecting, saying this has nothing to do with Star Wars and that because they are not doing it themselves then it's not their problem.

It's fucking Twitter's problem and the people that keep encouraging the notion that it is somehow not a complete garbage bin of hatred, which leads people like this to think it's fun or even acceptable to express their likes/opinions without the aspect of being barraged by disgust and risking their personal information being violated.

If you are a woman or POC who likes current Star Wars and post it on social media you *WILL* get harassed and attacked. This isn't the case with MCU or other fandoms.
There is a strong racist and sexist tilted hate group who can't stand current Star Wars and will harass and doxx any woman or minority who they find who likes it. This is not a Twitter or social media issue. This doesn't happen to people who like current Marvel films. Or other franchises.
I'm not attempting to dismiss these issues. These issues are obvious issues with our society at large. What I'm saying is Twitter is not our ally in the fight against these issues. They are an enabler of them. Stop using it and stop acting like it's better than it is an encouraging others that as well when you're just setting them up for pain. It's not required in anyone's life. Move on. Help people find new communities.
I certainly wouldn't recommend a PoC woman (or really anyone for that matter) to post on 4chan, would you? Then why would you encourage them (or anyone for that matter) to post on Twitter? Hell at least like someone mentioned before, everything is anonymous on 4chan. It's probably LESS of a risk.

You know, hilariously, as an Asian Canadian I grew up loving Star Wars but when I heard a colleague say that Donnie Yen (who I thought was one of the best parts of the movie) "wasn't necessary," I was seriously disheartened. And then they mentioned exactly that Chinese dollar excuse, yet I honestly felt like it worked beyond the Chinese pull, because here's just awesome feel of representation.
Like what a roller coaster. Here was this part of something I grew up loving, and thinking "great, they recognize some parts of my heritage too now!", only to run into someone else who decided it wasn't needed in their idea of what Star Wars could be.
Again, the best line Simpsons has had in recent years was this one of Lisa describing Comic Book Guy and his ilk -

And yet these same people constantly argue that Lucasfilm should only pander to them (white straight cis men) because they're the ones who spend money on SW i.e. they're saying that Lucasfilm should first and foremost consider the financials.
Even in this forum you get insulted if you say you like the prequels or TLJ. "Well, it's OK to have shit taste" and stuff like that.

Same. Honestly, I thought it was TLJ and Solo that ruined a lot of my enjoyment of the series, but no... It's the fucking fandom. YT Star Wars videos are just LITTERED with controversy bait "wHy x RuInEd StAr WaRs" and people making insane generalizations about everyone who liked or disliked a thing. Twitter and Reddit is actually filled with people attacking people for having different opinions. Even on here, anytime I see someone genuinely wanting to discuss the future of the series, it's always filled with the most cynical shit takes and people getting personal with each other.
People always badmouth reddit but I browse SW topics there sometimes and honestly a lot of the discussion there is more civil than it is here lol
Aren't these people always yelling about how women do not like Star Wars and that's why Lucasfilm shouldn't "pander" to them? Tbh, I think Star Wars Reddit has calmed down a looooot since the TLJ and Solo days. I do find reading the leak and main subreddit more fun than discourse on here, so I'm kinda with you on that lol
I honestly don't mind "forced" diversity in movies/TV shows/video games/etc. even if you might call it corporate pandering, because it suggests to me that the balance of power has shifted from racists to... well, not racists. (sub in any other ism here if you want)
It's like the whole controversy over Ariel being played by a black actress in the new Little Mermaid movie. Thirty years ago Disney never would have considered putting a black actor in the leading role of one of their (extremely lucrative) princess movies. Even twenty years ago when there was that R&H Cinderella movie with Brandy, there were absolutely racist white parents who wouldn't show it to their kids because it wasn't the "real" Cinderella. Meanwhile it's 2019 and your fee-fees are hurt by a black mermaid? Good, fuck off, we don't need your money.
Luke Skywalker's character was a woman in Lucas' drafts at one point and while I can't imagine conscious sexism is what compelled him to change the character's gender, I sure as shit know that movie wouldn't have been nearly as successful with its target demographic in the 1970s if everything was the exact same except Luke is a girl. Since Disney bought the series they've made three billion dollar-plus movies with a woman in the leading role, and the only people who care are fanboy manchildren on the Internet. In fact the only SW that's bombed under their watch was a spin-off featuring a male lead.
So good. Keep it coming with them strong, female characters, or characters of all different races. It's Star Wars, everyone's an alien. Don't sit here and act like they all need to be white dudes.
