Even abortion related 'extremists'. Interesting how they mention anarchists, animal, pro-choice and BLM activists almost by name, but white supremacists are only implied in the 'Militia Violent Extremists'.

It's nice to have some good news for electoralism for once. It seems she was endorsed by Buffalo DSA as well.

Well, I'll wait for the election. I've been burned by having faith in electoralism before.

But that'd be great.

EDIT: Oh wait, the election has already taken place? Hahaha, oh I thought we were a couple of months away. Very cool that she's won.

Yeah I try not to get my hopes up over stuff like this anymore.

That said, seeing that plus watching Yang lose on the same night does make me feel a little bit of joy so I'll take what I can get.

Very cool! I'm from Rochester but lived in Buffalo when I was young. Hope to see more momentum in these parts for more of this.

Quick update: two local DSA members running here won spots for city council. Another is virtually tied at the moment for county legislature so he might end up winning too (he's up by literally 20 votes last I checked).

Something to note is one of them has been an outspoken advocate for defunding and abolishing the police (there was even an NPR article about her a few months ago on that subject). It's pretty great to see her win after championing that message without watering it down or anything.

I know it doesn't always seem like much, and it's dangerous to put too much faith into electoralism, but it still feels nice to see some wins come across every now and then, big or small.

Never explored hangouts until tonight. Glad I did though.

I'm a Democratic Socialist. Well, actually I'm an Anarchist at heart, but I know that wouldn't work in a society... or at least I think it wouldn't the way I would want it too (honor human rights and respect boundaries, but otherwise no laws--yes, I'm aware that is contradictory). With that said I prefer a democratic process that elects representatives that oversee vital institutions and infrastructure for society to thrive.

Someday, I'd like it to switch to a direct socialist democracy where there are no representatives, but I think that requires a better society for starters as well as more involvement from a society's people.

I'm from the US. I think we've experienced enough. I'm hoping with a little more time (4-8 years), we can start making a big jump to a democratic socialist form of government.

Oh, and I strongly dislike capitalism. I believe money is the chief reason for class divides in our modern society. Just walking through the streets of New Orleans downtown yesterday reinforced that for me. Between Los Angeles' tent cities and the used needle I found outside the hotel I'm staying tonight in Montgomery, I think it's time to divorce ourselves from money before it spreads to space and creates a nightmare dystopia of rich aristocrats funding their business' and slaves on the moon.

We've tried capitalism for almost 250 years. I think it's time to try something new for the sake of everybody, but especially those who are trampled over in our society. I never again want to see what I saw yesterday. Nobody should have to try to find money, food, or something as simple as a shower to wash themselves of their own piss while trying to take care of and feed anyone else.

Sorry, not sorry. /rant

Proud socialist here.

What's funny, I listening to podcast with the founder of the athletic apparel Lululemon and he was praising China's recent economic dynamism. They were also lamented Europe's and America's regulations.

Many of these business types love China and forgot to mention CCP's craziness.

Oh they don't forget, they just don't care so long as they're raking in the dough.

On another note:

I guess I just didn't want to shitpost in the 1 million net worth thread but the posts there are a bit insane lol I see people on the gaming side buying consoles on a whim and I already think "rich". All the caveats described there through all the pages mostly make me think "rich too".

Middle class hates that you point out that they have comfort.

Yeah that thread is really something. Every single petit bourgeoisie coming out to say that they're basically poor, actually.

Interesting thought.

It's a hell of a long and sometimes challenging read (300+ pages in the unabridged edition), but Max Weber wrote a a series of essays compiled into (IMO) a very important book on this very subject of Protestantism being incorporated into the modern secular social framework back in the 1900s, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. I refer to it quite often, it's incredibly insightful on how one facet of human oppression directly informed another.

EDIT: It is still interesting how capitalism's aggressiveness in the modern world is making people unfamiliar with Weber's work come to the same conclusions independently.

I think big part of the problem is that "middle class" and "rich" are not all that well defined or even useful terms. Don't get me wrong, I think arguing that millionaires aren't rich is hilarious, they most certainly are unless you use really silly definitions of rich, but I think a better framing would have avoided most of those problems.

But sadly, the alternatives are well beyond my spelling abilities.

I can't avoid saying this is just lack of empathy to at least a certain extent. People taking things too personal and not understanding why anyone would feel like that.

I agree but the terms being wonky only explains so much, people there just telling on themselves.

I feel blessed that in portuguese it's pretty easy lol

Those threads I just hit "ignore thread" and move on. Don't have the energy for semantics debates with people who clearly don't share my values. There's plenty of things on ERA I just find pointless to talk about from a socialist POV.

Going to be a bit of a contrarian here and suggest that regardless of whether you consider having $1M in net worth (which to be clear, I definitely do not) to be "rich" or just "well off" it's not impossible for someone to be in that ballpark whilst having limited ownership of capital outside of something like a pension fund. And in terms of class analysis, using petit-bourgeoisie to mean "someone who isn't ultra wealthy but still has money" is a pretty empty descriptor; for Marx (and others) it describes the self-employed small business owner, who despite working, imitates/strives towards the bourgeoisie proper.

Absolutely hammer home the reality of wealth and income inequality, but I feel there's a risk of getting bogged down in vague, moralistic arguments.

Curious, what do you guys think about landlords/real estate investors?

Can't hate the player but hate the game? lol.

Yea. Id loathe the idea of being a landlord because I am actively exploiting someone. Maybe at cost without making a dime. But that seems rather pointless too.
I have no qualms with investing and saving for retirement. That's playing the game under the given circumstances. But I would not want to be an active landlord.

Bad. On a gradient where Meemaw and Pop pop Airbnbing their guest room is largely excusable and slumlording is straight up exploitation. I allow for wiggle room for people who inherit property with little desire to maintain them but cannot immediately divest for social reasons (such as familial expectations and pressure)

There are investment opportunities that don't involve monopolizing essential commodities; monopolizing those commodities incurs an ethical cost proportional to the degree of monopoly and the essentialness of that commodity (see also, Nestle). WRT that scalping thread, I consider most real estate investors to be far more objectionable than most scalpers, though obviously a consumer hobbyist community (like ERA) would feel the opposite because hobbyist consumption is the greatest good in their life.
