Thank you. I've been getting into RTJ lately so that video is so fucking good. And traditional animation, too, props to them.

Hey, just wanted to introduce myself. I've been getting into socialism recently after reading the essay Albert Einstein wrote and have started going through all the stuff in the OP. I think i'll try to be active in this thread. So hello to everyone!

Real midnight on Saturday hours question:

How do leftists/socialists/communists deal with the seemingly neverending grasp of capitalism in our entertainment and arts? I realize this is a no duh kind of thing, but for the last year or so I feel like it's been a lot harder to enjoy my favorite media brands and series because I start to pull at a thread a bit and the whole thing starts to unravel. Great Man theory, war apologia, glorification of the ruling class, etc. I've made this comparison before but once you go full communist it starts to feel a bit like realizing Santa Claus isn't real when you're watching superhero movies or whatever and you realize it's almost all neoliberal junk food. Again, I realize I'm not saying anything revolutionary here, but it's harder to just switch off my brain and enjoy something for what it is. While you can avoid a lot of it by staying away from the mass media stuff, even the more personal storytelling often has elements of this in some form and it becomes distracting.

The answer is probably "find other hobbies" but unfortunately I work in the entertainment industry so this is difficult to wrestle with! I do find video games a somewhat soothing escape though since they are usually less burdened by narrative and are more about the visceral experience than anything else.

Personally I've begun to become more selective with what I play and watch, and where I buy from.

In the last couple of months I've donated several times to Means.tv. They launch in less than 2 weeks and I'm hoping they become succesful and a force for change in the entertainment industry. The preview content they've been releasing for the last year has been pretty promising.

I've been having similar issues with entertainment. For movies, it has helped that there have been at least a handful of reall good movies recently that operate on socialist subtext and the fact that I've already been consuming less media in general since the rise in comic book based "junk food." I was long burnt out on comic book movies before delving into socialism.

Still, I catch the occasional flick and I groan at centrist pro-capitalist and anti-left radicalism messaging. I guess if you actually work in media, then the problem is not as simple to avoid most of the time as it is for me.

I dunno how I feel about it but overall I don't feel too guilty if it's just mainstream blockbuster stuff like Marvel movies unless there's something too egregious

Well first I'd like to say that there is tons of the media that doesn't subscribe to those ideas, maybe the mainstream stuff but I just saw 1917 yesterday which if anything show how imperialism throws countless of (working class) men into the war machine meat grinder. I don't care about Superhero movies anymore and never really liked Star Wars, so that helps for me I think. But even then, Joker was surprisingly anti-austerity and may have (probably by accident) created a materialist reading of the character by suggesting Joker's material conditions, the slashing of social program funding and a self-absorbed society (the kind of one created by American neoliberalism) was responsible for making the monster.

Also, this is the part where I plug-in for Disco Elysium. A game made my literal communists, my GOTY 2019 and in general just one of the best written games to grace this medium.

I'm waiting for the Switch release on Disco Elysium, lol. Any day now...

For sure there's stuff that isn't just "rahrah capitalism and neoliberalism," but for someone like me who basically grew up on a diet of action/adventure genre escapism, it's harder to consume that stuff without coming away with the conclusion that it's basically just junk food that rots your soul overtime. I think there is a growing appetite for that sort of storytelling that does question the norms of our society though; the Good Place is a fantastic example of a mainstream show that consistently challenges what we assume about our morals and society, while still being a lighthearted fantasy sitcom. (It had an anarchist philosopher advise the show who made a cameo in the last episode.)

A trailer for a movie from Means. A Syrian immigrant has dreams of starting his own taxi company in the US, but a lack of steady employment slowly grinds away at his hope and resolve.

The FAQ also says that currently all their content is in English, but they are aiming to start streaming content in other languages ASAP. So I'd imagine it will either be available in Latin America at launch or very soon after.

Bong Joon Ho is definitely one of us, and Parasite isn't his first movie tackling class warfare at all either.

Very happy with how strong Bernie was on workers' power tonight. Bloomberg has probably never been told to his face before that he doesn't deserve his money and that he didn't create his wealth on his own.

This feels on-brand with the subject of this OT:

molleindustria.itch.io

Democratic Socialism Simulator by molleindustria

Pave the road to a post-capitalist society

The Democratic Socialism Simulator is an attempt to prefigure the opportunities and challenges of a Sanders (or Sanders-like) presidency. It is meant to entertain, enrage, provoke socialist-curious players as well as comrades on the front lines of the political revolution.

I just bought it and played it twice, it's actually pretty fun. Heavily inspired from Reigns, the writing is snarky and the aesthetics are pretty cool.

Really captured the miserable nerd. lol

That's awesome! What's the name of their character?

edit: I just realized this is a random image and you probably wouldn't know. lol

Hah, my post was kind of in two parts. The screenshot was random, but my anecdote wasn't. In our first session, when some 'thugs' that were working for a crime lord took some hostages in the tavern we were in, he got so worked up that he (literally) caught fire and called them all class traitors. That's when I fell in love.

As an introduction, I've been getting more radical these past few years. I've been listening to breadtube, Zizek, and podcasts like Citations Needed and Chapo Trap House. I've been campaigning for Bernie for now but when that's over I'd like to do things with the local DSA. I am eager to hear more and to actual do things beyond posting.

i've pretty much in the same boat, been an active participant in the posting wars, regularly interact with leftist twitter, and listen to pods like chapo, but have (finally) started to organize and participate in local socialist groups (this part is especially important to me, given that true leftist movements don't have a ton of momentum in canada yet).

next i gotta read some fuckin theory. watched numerous docs but haven't explored fundamental things like das kapital, etc. and then i eventually want to pursue a career that somehow contributes to leftist causes
