My thread was closed within like, 20 seconds. Definitely was a knee-jerk lock, not the product of someone having read it and finding it objectionable.

I'm going to get all tinfoily and muse about how one of the moderators in question was one of the most combative, pertinacious Hillary supporters back at the old place. To draw it back to the earlier discussion of how this forum is seen as "left," it's largely by design of the higher ups. They welcome being seen as the place for oppressed and exploited folks to gather and sing their praises, but the minute someone starts agitating a little too much for the liberal ownership, all bets are off. In other words, this place is the Democratic Party.

This made me laugh at least. But also sad.

How are we supposed to push it further left when even most of the people in this thread are milquetoast DemSocs? Get a real tendency!

I've been thinking for a while now of adopting the old LF tactic where they bombarded GBS with effortposts, and I think that definitely helped push SA leftward. But the problem is it requires effort. And I'm lazy!

You're absolutely right but I am choosing to ignore that rn.

Yeah I'm not sure I have the will or resilience for a sustained effortful well-intentioned 'campaign', or that's the meaning I'm drawing from this. I learned to not get in my feelings about this stuff like yesterday and even that's debatable.

Hey, comrades, if you want to show solidarity to our trans brothers and sisters, just swing on by the Trans Awareness week thread in the pinned section of the EtCetera forum! It's easy to miss, but allies would be very, very, very appreciated right now, for reasons that will become very obvious to you the second you click in on the latest couple pages.
You got it!

as shitty as the circumstances around this are, the near-total lack of transparency and accountability from the mod team was bound to blow up in their faces at some point and I'm glad people are speaking up. solidarity with the trans/ace communities here

I'm not saying anything new here, but for a certain sort of woker-than-thou liberal, it couldn't be more obvious that their "support" for marginalized groups only extends so far as said minorities can make you feel good about your own wokeness, or can be invoked as a rhetorical cudgel against opponents to your right or left. if they're agitating in a way that doesn't lend itself to either of these things, they're fair game

The owner of the forum said on NeoGAF that Bernie Bros would rat out minorities hiding, Anne Frank-style, from a fascist regime.

Me educating myself on like every nascent social issue ever:

T00:00 "I don't see what the big deal is."
T00:10 "Oh, ouch..."
T02:00 "I literally just learned about this but the more I read about it the more upset I get."

Like it's not hard to just suspend judgement and listen to people and see how it might strike or affect a change in one's own perspective. But the more the moderation staff is kept separate from us the more they will see that kind of forbearance as being elective and not their full responsibility as the stewards of this place.

Is that true? Christ. Is this why SocialismERA has no representation among mods/admins?

Isn't Brazil a socialist? Or at least a PT supporter. Honestly I think it's more likely that socialists just don't volunteer for the position. I've been told numerous times by people (informally, not staff) that I should be a mod and my answer is always the same: I have no interest in it.

I'll echo those posters- I think you'd be a good mod. But you're probably right, I'd bet you won't find much interest here in people being mods. I still would like to see more socialists represented on the staff; in the past two years we've become a significant and vocal presence on ERA. The community should have a share in the ownership and operation of the forum, including all of the community. Even us.

socialists probably aren't eager to volunteer for the position when they (correctly, IMO) perceive the mod/admin culture as being less than welcoming towards them

What happens to the mods here is endemic to any community that does not adhere to some for of radical transparency to keep mods accountable for their actions and perhaps moreso, their inactions.

Keeping true to intersectional politics the mods truly feel they are intersecting with the most oppressed groups on the site. The intersection often though seems to in relation to an identity of being pretty dedicated liberals with no interest of transforming society beyond some vague notion of meritocracy and lean-in..

Things are tough right now, but here's a meme that I laughed at while at work and maybe it will lighten things up a bit:

I'm choosing to take that as further confirmation that they and people like them critically misunderstand the left in such a way that their opinions can be safely disregarded.

For some reason people blame " Bernie bros" for why Hillary lost the election even though Bernie supporters voted for Clinton in large.

In their defense, she would have won if the 3rd party vote for lefty wasn't so high (theoretically).

Honestly, being a democrat in the U.S. is like herding cats at the best of times; angry coke-ed up hornets when we lose.
