So, we're all in agreement that Ori and the Will of the Wisps is the best looking 2D game ever right

I've been playing the review code for a while, and the amount of detail and sheer variation is just staggering. This game is something special for sure.
Agreed, it screams indie-quirk to me and I'm not that into that. I do think it looks good though, but I much prefer the 32-bit pixel look over something like this.
I agree. Cuphead is a lost art. That's what I call hand made and ridiculously good looking and unique.
Ori 2 is beautiful too of course. 😅

I've had Sundered sitting on my HDD for ages and somehow never got round to playing it. This looks fantastic, I'll have to give it a shot once I'm done with Hyper Light Drifter.Gris and Cuphead are crazy beautiful.

To the thread at hand, I'd say Gris might be the prettiest of the 2D games I've played, or Cuphead. Gris looks amazing but was really shallow, Cuphead looks amazing with both animation and artstyle, and is one of my favourite games to play as well... But Ori WotW looks amazing, so its certainly in contention for "best looking 2d game"

I just started this game, and it's fun and all. But lets be real. That water rising level/escape SUCKED. (I just got past it and I'm salty)
It looks amazing, for sure, but it's 3D. Whether the 3D graphics are displayed on an actual 3D space or in a "flat" perspective doesn't change the fact that they are still 3D. The same goes for Guilty Gear. These games have their place and they do look incredible, but for me sprite-based stuff will always be much more impressive, if only just because you have to create individual sprites for every single movement.
I'm not sure what I'd call the best looking 2D game of all time, but I'd nominate Memoria as a candidate:

As far as games with 3D characters played on the 2D plane, it's up there with the best ever.
But, as far as ANY 2D game...I'm still taking Cuphead.
And a lot of people have mentioned the new Guilty Gear (and rightfully so), but I also want to give a shout to King of Fighters XIII, which STILL stuns me occasionally when I look at it. Maybe not the best EVER anymore, but I'd put it right up there.

2d platformer sure, but 2d game includes 2d fighting games. It's not even the best looking this year in that case.
It doesn't count as 2D to me, because much like Dead Cells, everything was created in 3D. Same with Guilty Gear. They are both absolutely gorgeous though!
Gris is stunning and so Thunder Lotus' output (Spiritfarer, Jotun and Sundered). I also will always have a soft spot for Third Strike's fluid animation.

I've been playing it for a while and where I ended up yesterday (at the frog guardian, forgot his name) was so beautiful that it was a perfect ending point for the session. I don't know if it's best looking ever, in terms of artstyle Cuphead is hard to beat, but it's so incredibly pretty. You're playing a storybook, it's stunning.

What weakens Ori's style to me is the limbo (yes yes) style of using tons of black space + blurry background, and also warping type animations on textures. It's still impressive though but many games look more unique, artstyle wise and more impressive to me.
