Out of curiosity I decided to check in on one of my favorite urban legends/conspiracies - UVB-76, AKA The Buzzer, a radio frequency that has been operating out of Russia practically non-stop since the late 70's and, as far as I know, has never been explained by the government.

So I scrolled down the wikipedia page and got literal chills seeing all of the 2020 entries (there are cited links). It makes sense, given what a year this has been, but the messages are still an enigma. Here's a sampling:

And at one point in mid-August, spectrogram images of animals, Pokémon, and Spongebob characters were sent out. It's suggested that it was a third party messing with the signal, at one point some French fisherman accidentally jumped on the same frequency, but maybe Pikachu is in on it.

And then there's this, perhaps the spookiest message of all and the last update (on this page at least) -

On September 3rd more morse code continued with increasing frequency, alongside the buzzer, which continued running. Then in the evening of September 3rd 2020, strange interference occurred which made the buzzer become slightly distorted, while still playing on the usual repeating pattern. Yet more morse code played alongside the strange interference of the buzzer. At one point the code spelt out "SOS".

Of course it could be the most mundane ciphered messages in the world, but still. Feels like a very fitting topic to revisit for October...
