I remember when people used to love CR (admittedly this was MANY years ago). What happened?

Some legitimate issue with CR:
CR got find out paying translator below industry standard. and i think at one point people find out their encoding is really bad (probably already got fixed though). App in console also kinda bad

Some segment that also hate their translation/localization style. I personally don't mind, especially since they pay their translator a low rate (hopefully they already resolve this)

the "negativity and trolls"'bit is the biggest red flag I have ever seen. No professional company talks like that. That's rando internet talk.
It comes across more as someone who follows shitty vaguely anime-related influencers struggling to maintain enough cognizance to recognize that they need to actually make a case for why other people should give them money.

but they say multiple times they're a "registered, trademarked app"

they're a registered app, y'all. I don't know what that is but it sounds offficial

i wonder if they're a member of the Better Business Bureau, if they are they can't possibly be a scam!!

Streaming quality was so bad that I started ripping the subs and use them for raws lol.

I've been using Crunchyroll every now and then for quite some time and never not had problems (for free with ads, not paying, don't even have an account).
At its best times, it was broken in a way, I benefited from: The ads tried to load, but after a short while of black screen, the anime continued.
At its worst times, the same spot would play over and over in a neverending loop, forcing me to reload the whole vid – meaning watching all commercial breaks again.
This went on for quite a while, it worked as intented rarely.

These days they cracked up the commercials quite a bit – 3 breaks, each often up to 2 min long (what is quite much for a 20 min episode if you ask me). But the real bad part is, that they often throw the videos off synch. During the ad subs would continue in the background, so when the video comes back, it would be way behind the subs. No way of fixing other than reloading the whole vid, sitting through all ads again – risking for it to happen again nevertheless.
Other times the subs would also just disappear, mostly when skipping a bit. Again, no other way to bring them back than to reload.
I understand that they want to politely urge you to pay this way, but given how broken it seems to me overall, no way in hell I'll start doing so.

So is the "Project We Love" badge on KS automated, or is someone on their staff gullible enough to fall for this obvious scam? Rewards aren't guaranteed, they cancelled the previous attempt last month and came back with a lower goal, and they aren't making any attempt to answer any doubts to try and assuage anyone.

Crunchyroll removed the original theme and switched to dark only so I'm unsubscribed until they fix things. Night blindness is rough to deal with.
As someones subbed to Funimation, their web players is pretty bad lol.
Funimation having a watermark on the bottom right corner of the screen sucks too. There's no reason for it. Anti-piracy measures? Give me a break. People can download watermark free versions of episodes easy.

We have a highly experienced executive team with a proven history of developing high quality, complex products in several industries, including military software. Our support team likewise has extensive experience in accounting, customer support, marketing, software testing, and more!
Do they though?

Everything about this has all the look and feel of a "stream stuff illegally until you're so big and made money through ads that you can become legitimate" but with the extra step of trying to look legitimate to begin with to get donations, which in turn is going to get it stopped fast

It's talk to the Kaifuku Jutsushi no Yarinaoshi crowd who think anime is too leftist and censored.

Besides this being a scam, Retrocrush is already a great free service (terrible UX, great catalog.)

Maybe it's just the years of working with uncountable delusional people who are convinced they can make a platform to rival Amazon for like $10/mo and no effort, but my immediate reaction to this sort of thing is usually that it's just some guy who has no idea how anything works assuming everything will just fall into place. Like they say they're "in talks" and that probably translates to "I sent the creator of AoT a dm on Twitter, he'll definitely say yes eventually"

I mean six of one half a dozen of another cause when it blows up they'd almost certainly try to run with the money anyway.

Ah! For most of Latin America, our only legal option is Crunchyroll. Funimation continues pretending that Latin America is only Mexico and Brazil.

Edit: guess they added Colombia, Chile and Perú. I don't understand these clowns. Why not open the fucking website to all Latin America? Pendejos.

It looks like the pledge total is going down. I could have sworn it was at $111k last night, but this morning it was at $108k, and now it's down to $107k.

So it's pirates trying to look legit. They can run away with the money or can they be stopped in time?

Crunchyroll web player is bad because it can just buffer and stay there, resume isn't great, ads are too long. I don't think most of the player issues get resolved by paying. Funimation is a bit better, I think? When I tried to watch that Honda slice of life bike one.

Unless they contract work from outside of their "LLC", it's literally just the guy and what I assume is his wife. So they probably don't have any "team", frankly.

They have a team section on their website that reads like it's all people from their pirate Xbox app days--they have community management, support, testing, etc is all for a previous version of their app. Since said app also used to sell DLC to remove ads, that'd cover the accounting.

Like these are some team member bios from the main website:
Konnie is our public relations specialist / HR rep. and is an integral part of our company as she has balanced customer and staff support for our company for the past 8 years.

She is responsible for writing press releases and other media communications to build relationships with our community base in order to promote our company.

With her BS in Psychology and minor in Sociology, she has been invaluable in supporting and maintaining relationships with our employees while actively connecting with our large community base from around the world.

Aidan has been one of our key software testers over the past 10 years, finding several issues during our test phase leading to high quality products being delivered upon release.

He is studying Pre-Med.

Fave anime: Dragon Ball Z and One Piece

(I think this means he started being a software tester for them at, like, 12?)

It all reads like an inspiring garage-based startup until you remember that they've joined forces to profit off piracy.

Yeah this seems like the kind of thing where as soon as one lawyer calls up KS this thing will get taken down, then the creator will whine about being suppressed by "big anime".

Anime streaming is such a shitty section of entertainment that it doesn't surprise me this is happening. I just want streaming services to have all seasons of the damn shows, not have something like 2 seasons here and than the last season or whatever elsewhere. Looking at you Haikyuu!

Ugh. Anyways, screw Funimation lol. I think we can all agree with that.

Encoding still trash
Web development team doesn't exist anymore
They replace the episodes uploaded with lower bitrate versions a short time after they are published

Nobody likes CR/Funi and are desperate for anyone, literally anyone, else to enter the market.

So they hate Funi/CR enough to try to fund some totally unproven app instead? That'll show 'em. ;)

Oh hey, you can connect with Aimi-Chan, that's a gamechanger.

I'm pretty sure all those bids are fake/will be withdrawn though.

I still don't understand how Crunchyroll started out just stealing fansubs and ended up being sold (probably) for 1.2 billion dollars. Just boggles my mind.
