I've never had any creepy experiences while camping out, except hearing awful renditions of campfire songs. I did have a friend who was walking the woods near his home and came upon a pasture. A bull in the field spotted him and chased him up a tree. He said he had to wait up there over an hour until the bull got tired of waiting on him and left. By the way, he tells me this while we're walking through the same area and freaks me out.
So what outdoor experiences have you had that were scary?

I'm from a small town so a big part of high school entertainment was just driving around on dirt roads out in the country. One night we were cruising around in this dude's truck in the absolute middle of nowhere, probably 10-20 miles away from any type of civilization. As a joke, the guy that was driving turned off his lights and engine to see how dark/quiet it could get so far out in the country. After just a minute or two he flipped the ignition over and turned the lights back on and there were suddenly HUNDREDS of rabbits all around the truck. Shit was spooky.

I was once walking in the woods late at night when I must have accidentally got up close to a coyote or something cause I heard the bark and the sound of bushes rustling as something ran away. Damn near shit myself.

One time I heard a deer sneeze in the dark. Not what I was expecting

I buried some porn in a hole in the woods once. A neighbor stole some of his dad's vintage Playboys. Had to keep the tradition of finding porn in the woods alive. No joke.

Was collecting some chestnuts with some friends in fall couple of years ago, we have a shitload of those trees in the woods near my hometown and they're pretty tasty.

After a while, we noticed squirrels following us, though didn't think further of that and continued collecting.

Then, couple of hours later, the squirrels were not only still there, but also more of them, like ... more than 20 ... and they followed us for the rest of the way out of the woods.

Not really scary ... it's just that this wasn't happening in the many years before when we did the chestnut collecting.

My cousin's back yard, outside of Boston had this massive woods, and HUGE rocks everywhere... we used to find small caves and such all the time.

We went out, into a very small cave, and found what was obviously a camp for a homeless person - but there was all sorts of animals hung up on the walls - killed and drying... and a fire that had been extinguished maybe a few hours before.

We have never run faster in our entire lives.

I used to live next to a huge forest preserve and would often hang out with my friends in the wood where we had put a little bench and table and just kind of chilled out during summer days. Well, one time we decided to go at night and have a little bonfire and just chill.

So we start making our usual journey the woods but about halfway through our path we start hearing voices and see what appears to be a bonfire. Now, this was a pretty fair bit into the woods and we had never seen anyone else out there so we started to get a little bit nervous and decided to try and get a little closer to see what was going on. As we start approaching the fire, we see a group of about 5-6 people all dancing around the fire wearing weird masks with their shirts off and stuff painted on their chest. This made us freak out and we all decided to get the hell out of there and head home for the night.

About a week later we decided to go back but during the day and went to check out where we had seen the group and we found a dead chicken on the ground and after that, we decided to never go back to there again lol

Went on a camp once with school in the woods and I heard a terrifying sound at night. Sounded like the Devil screaming at me.

Turns out it was a Barn Owl:

Me and some friends found a sleeping bag and a high-powered flashlight next to a small forest near our high school.

I was scared for a while that the owner watched us and would follow us from school and knock us off as payback. Kept looking over my shoulder.

Years later I felt bad we may have taken a homeless person's few possessions, we assumed it was some junkie at the time.

I was alone on a frozen lake in the middle of the woods ice fishing. That in and of itself is sort of creepy. The ice "pops" as it buckles and the silence can be sort of eerie. The actual creepiness is the feeling of being watched, as I would sometimes see wolves standing at the edge of the lake staring at me, probably wondering what was going on.

Porn being in the woods is (was) super common. Probably not as common as it used to be with internet porn being so accessible. Usually a boy friend or husband of someone who wants their stash gone, but they can't just toss it in the trash, so it gets dumped in the woods. I remember back in the 90s my sister made her boy friend get rid of his collection and he dumped it in the woods.

Never had anything creepy happen to me in the woods, just peace and sounds of nature.

I did that once. Up near the old Cree burial ground. Nagassackett. When I put those books in the ground, they was Playboys mostly. A little do-eared, but intact. Tasteful photography. Intelligent articles by folks like Chomsky, Gore Vidal, even poems by Emerson.

But the ground is sour up there. Dark things alight between those trees. One day that sour earth spat those books back up. When they was found, whatever good was in them, was stripped out and replaced with somethin' - somethin' darker. They was Hustlers, Fiesta, Family Heat, Truckstop Bathroom Glory Hole Monthly, pages stuck together like ancient plaster. But the pictures. They'd changed the worst. When they went into the ground, they was beauties, silhouetted like race cars, or draped in silks in soft light. But now - now they looked like the last chicken at Safeway, the meat puckered and gray, they eyes as dead as fish. And what they was doing.. no articles, nothing to peruse, nothing to learn except the brutality of human flesh splayed out like a shrimp buffet at a prison riot....Sometimes,,,, sometimes, read is bettah.

We used to make movies with a friend of mine who was a studying movies at the time. We were scouting locations in the woods, and came across an old abandoned building, probably an old clinic or something. This was not in the middle of the woods, we were still close to the main road, so it was not a Blair Witch scenario or anything like that but still, this was a great place to shoot some stuff. The whole place was literally in ruins. But we found that one room which was entirely covered in pictures of women knees. Just that, close up of women knees. Home made pictures. Black and white photocopies from magazines. Collages. Women posing, other clearly not aware their photo was being taken. Just everywhere, four walls covered, floor to ceiling. And painted on one wall across those pictures, the words "I love women knees" in black paint.

This is still to this day the creepiest shit I ever witnessed.

I don't really have any creepy forest stories myself, except for all that porn I found the one time, but I always find this story of 404's Justin Yu getting lost in the woods to be both scary and funny:

Remember the time Justin Yu got lost in the woods? Relive the madness.

Also, Dan Bell's YouTube channel has a lot of great nighttime creepiness.

Not exactly the woods, but I grew up close to this park that was adjacent to woods. The park is also close to a convenience store, so people would walk through it occasionally to get to the store.

Anyway, I was elementary school aged and was out there by myself hitting a baseball around when I saw these two guys walking through the park like they were coming back from the store. At first they walked past me and I thought I was good, but then when they were half way through the park, I saw them talk to each other and turn around. I instantly sprinted back home.

I never looked back, so I had no idea if they were actually after me or not, but I figured it was better to be safe than sorry. I probably would've been dragged off into the woods if they really were after me.

Was about to write this.
Cities are scarier.

Believe me, wild boar "infested" woods can be *pretty* scary, especially during their mating season and when they're having offspring.

Local hunters block the most dangerous areas normally around where i live ... but you know the pigs are not known to stay within their areas. ;D

I had luck so far, but the brother of my oldest friend was chased by a wild board mother when he was in the woods early morning jogging.

Back in the late 1980's, I had just graduated from cub scouts into Boy Scouts and the entire troop was going to a merit badge camp in Mississippi.
A good friend of mine and I were the two youngest scouts in the troop and we were too young to go on an overnight excursion within the camp down a river and were forced to stay back at the main camp on that day.

At this particular camp, there was one air conditioned building called "The Trading Post" where you could get ice cream and listen to the radio, which we did as often as they let us in the middle of Mississippi in July.

On the radio this particular day a local news report came on and announced a panther had escaped from the local zoo and people should be on the lookout for it.

Well later that night, there's only 3 people in our entire camp site since the older boys were on their river excursion. Myself and my friend in one tent, and the scout master in a tent at the front of the circular formation of tents, 7 tents away.

At approximately 2am it was eerily quiet except for a low growling at the front of our tent. I woke my buddy up "Dude! The fucking escaped panther! It's right outside our tent!"

"Oh shit!"
And so we pulled out our pocket knives and cut ourselves out the back of the tent and snuck through the forest in the middle of the night far enough away so the panther didn't eat us. Except we forgot the scout master back at the camp site.

So we carefully creep through the forest at the perimeter of the campsite, closer and closer to the front of the circular formation of tents where the scout master's tent was.

closer and closer and the growling was getting louder and LOUDER! The panther was IN the scout master's tent!

So we were going to have to stab this panther to death to save the scout master. We opened the tent ready to become heroes and... ... ... holy shit Mr. Foster snores loud!

We didn't become heroes and our parents were pissed that they had to pay for the campsite's property tents we cut our way out of... 😑

neither of us were allowed to have a pocket knife for the next year.

I've had large animals go through my camp while camping or backpacking. Had a bear meander through camp once while backpacking in Montana. We had tied all our food between trees though so he left us alone. Pretty damn scary though.

Me an my pa used to go kite flying on a hill at the edge of thick woodland.
Part of the fun would be shouting into the woods to hear our voices echo back.

On one occasion a third voice screamed back at us following our echoing voices. It didn't sound like any human or deer I know of.
Often we've wondered if it was an example of a British Big Cat.

Then who was phone?

A crowd of coyotes once came out of the woods and circled my tent while I was camping with friends. They just kinda sat down in a circle around the tent and watched us for about half an hour before they got scared off and all ran away.

It was kinda scary but also just kinda awesome too.

back when I was a kid there was a wooded area with a pond behind the subdivision I lived in. One day when I was exploring the area with a friend around night we found a coyote or something with a wooden stake stabbed through it's chest on the bank.

No such experience but I once wanted to cut through the woods to save ten minutes walk (at 3pm). I didn't because no sunlight could come through the trees. It was scary like a portal to the underworld.

Ah, that actually reminds me of some creepy shit I saw. I was at a park and went to an out of the way bench to read. There was also a rudimentary grill nearby and as I got closer, I saw the scorched carcass of a snake on the grill. Its head had been cut off and placed on one of the posts holding up the grill. There are some sick fucks out there.

I was going home from a friend sometime past midnight and decided to play ingress on the way home. I was bombing a portal and suddenly a dude pops out of some bushes and says "what are you doing?!" He apparently left his home because he lived nearby just to confront me.

Used to hang in the woods a lot in middle and high school. Scariest memory happened in the middle of winter around midnight. There was this retention pond back in the middle of the woods behind the neighborhood that had a staircase and a platform about 30 feet long going to the middle of it.

One night we were out there having a fire on top of a hill by the pond and heard a very loud metallic screeching noise coming from the woods back by the road (about 1/4 mile). There was an old car, probably from the 1940s, back there so we knew it had to be something scratching that. We kept an eye on the path but never saw something so kept hanging out.

About 45 minutes later we put the fire out and went down to the pond. There were about 6 of us down on the platform, just throwing rocks at the water. We threw about a dozen rocks in when something big splashed out of the water across from us and scurried up the other side of the pond. Keep in mind it was a full moon and in the dead of winter so there was plenty of light. We turned and booked it up the stairs, back through the woods, and back into the neighborhood so damn fast, checking over our shoulders every 10 feet. We eventually ran out of steam about a mile and a half down the road and figured we were safe.

We never came to a conclusion as to what it was. Someone suggested a raccoon but this was big and very fast. Plus, what was it doing in the cold water? I used to have a ton of pictures to better illustrate the story, especially the car and how the pond was situated, but they're long gone. The pond was developed about 10 years ago into a new subdivision so hopefully it's all good now.

Right now I'm working on housebreaking a new puppy, so frequent trips are taken outside to let her go bathroom, sometimes at all hours of night on occasion when she wakes up and cries (tell tale sign she is going to piss/crap her dog crate she sleeps in unless she is taken out).

So one such night I'm taking her out at like 2am, deciding to go out through my garage to get to my front yard. I open my garage door via my automatic garage opener which slowly lifts my door to a very loud rustling and some very large and fast moving things are moving outside my door as it slowly lifts which freaked me the fuck out (since at first I can't see exactly what it was.

It turns out it was 4 very large deer just that must have been hanging out right outside my door, and they bolted across the street when I opened the door. I proceed to very slowly and quietly let m dog piss in the yard, while the 4 deer just stand there motionless on the other side of the street staring at us (surprisingly enough my doggie did not freak out at all at our "visitors"). So, yeah, in the end just harmless deer, but in the dark while tired at 2am and that close up (very unexpectedly, its not like I live in the woods or anything, just regular suburb), it did give me a jump.

Went to take a piss in the dark while camping. Friend was like "take a flashlight", but I was like "nah I'll be fine", and I was. However when I woke up, I saw that the spot where I randomly stopped to piss was like two feet away from a 15 foot drop into a creek.

Another time I was walking in the woods taking pictures, and crazy ass wind started blowing. Dead branches started cracking and thudding to the ground all around me. Like, big, thick branches. The path back was through the same woods, so I just cut through a private bird sanctuary back to the road, because fuck getting clobbered to death by a falling branch lol.

Once I was backpacking in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, in the Porcupine Mountains. You're supposed to hang a bag with your food in it in a tree so that bears can't get it. Mine was hung about 15 feet up, but was the lowest one.

I woke up in the middle of the night to hear the other guy in his tent yelling, "HEY BEAR!" to try and scare off two black bears who had gotten my food. They were making really loud noises and were super close to my tent.

The next morning we got out of our tents to find my food and the bag completely demolished. They put a tooth mark in my peanut butter lid that I could fit a whole finger through. Luckily this path curved near a road, because we didn't have nearly enough food for the rest of the trip. We spent the last night in a hotel.

My friends and I would run/hike at the local park late at night/early mornings when it was closed. A huge park that was easy to get lost in if you didn't follow a trail. One full moon night a few of us were sitting on a hillside overlooking the main road.

Someone else had entered the park after us (from where we parked) and was walking at a steady pace following the road until they stopped directly under a light. They looked around, looked in our direction and then sprinted straight into the forest. A half hour later we were coming down the opposite side of the hill towards a gully when we stopped and saw a group of people with high powered flashlights scanning the forest, looking in the river and under the bridge.

A friend of mine who was the furthest down the hill slowly made his way back up after overhearing something someone with a flashlight had said. As we were going back up the hill, someone shouted "Over here!". We all stopped again to turn around and notice a dozen flashlights (more than we originally saw) focus in on a specific area of the forest on the other side of the gully. Whatever they heard had started hauling ass because you could hear it tearing through the brush even before they set off after it.

We waited for them to leave and then hauled ass ourselves down and around back to the entrance where we parked. My friend has never said what he overheard that night.

As a city-slicking homebody, the simple act of going camping is already a horror story for me.

I can't wait until I'm back home where my couch and shower are

As for a serious camping horror story, I had to use the washrooms at a campground this one time. Sat down on the toilet, and began my business.

That was when I looked down at the ground and saw the myriad of spiders scuttling on the ground. Some started getting curious about my shoes and tried hopping on

These weren't normal ass looking spiders. These were woods spiders. And I wasn't in a position to get up and walk out. Fear Factor ain't shit compared to an experience like that

Went on the forest trails near my neighborhood with my friend, it's full of green swamps. We trekked to a secluded area and saw a football helmet that belongs to the nearby highschool floating in one of the ponds. It made us wonder... Has there been a missing football player / student reported in our town recently? Creepy to think about, kids go missing every day

in college me and my buddies got stoned and one of our sober friends was driving us back to our place. we turned down this somewhat empty gravel road as a short cut. driver was going slow as the road was a bit rough, then all of a sudden 20+ horses came down the road and slowly surrounded the car, no damage or anything, but it scared the hell out of us. keep in mind this road was in a pretty good sized college town. we were very close to the campus. if our sober friend wasnt driving, we'd assume we were all having some group paranoia or something.

also getting followed by coyotes on dog walks is always unsettling.

these topics are always fun to read about. i like finding subreddits where people post this stuff on the reg
