Edit:

I feel compelled to say this as well because I believe it's responsible of me to do so.

For anybody considering buying crates to make money, don't do it, it wasn't until I won this that I understood how rare it was for this to happen, like Javier23 said, it's like hitting the lotto.

So please, don't do it, or if you do just bear that in mind.

I never gamble, the only reason I opened the crate was because I had £2 spare in my wallet and wanted a particular skin, I just made this thread out of excitement because this never happens to me.

I have never opened a crate before and I had enough to buy one left over in my steam wallet, normally I wouldn't even consider it but I love the new p90 skin (it has the classic CS design from 1.6 on it, I am weak, what can I say lol.)

Well, I ended up getting a yellow, which turns out to be the rarest thing you can get from a crate, so I went to the market to see how much this boreal forest knife was selling for and to cut a long story short, I now have £124 sitting in my steam account lol!

I can't believe people pay this much for cosmetics in games but honestly I can't say I am complaining because nothing like this ever happens to me.

I will never open another CS GO crate again though because I know that's what gaben wants lol, just going to buy the skin I want (it's only £3.00 on the market) and then enjoy my new found wealth from the Russian person who brought the knife from me.

The reason I made this thread was because I am curious has this has ever happened to anybody else? Nothing ever happens to me like this so I am honestly still in shock.

Made an absolute fortune on TF2 hats. Got out while the getting was good. Paid for all my games for a year or two, easy.

That's how they get people with these crates. It's essentially real gambling at that point.

But no I didn't have that luck yet in the form of making money from it. I did get KOS-MOS pretty quickly in XC2 though if that counts lol

If anyone feels compelled to try this for the first time because of this thread, be aware that OP basically won the lotto. It is extremely likely that you will just waste your money.

I made about $100 off of PUBG items. I love not being very big on these cosmetics, it's literally like getting free lotto tickets for me lol.

I made like, $25 or $30 bucks selling the Twitch Prime PUBG outfit on the Steam marketplace when it was new. Shit's worth pennies now.

I made quite a fortune off TF2 hats. I know someone that bought an Valve Index from playing the market game.

Opening a crate and getting a knife of your first go is some serious luck tho.

Between H1Z1 and CSGO I made enough from the market to buy games for two years. On Rocket Leagues I pad 40 keys for a wheel and traded it for 210 keys a few months later And had enough to buy what I wanted and rocket passes for years.

The market was cool and I understand the downsides and why it's best for loot boxes not to exist but boy was it useful for awhile.

I sold TF2 hats and made around 500 euros back in the day.

This was from trading though before values were established and before the market.

I got a low tier unusual hat from a crate I opened, worth about 40 euros at the time. I opened a dozen or so.

I saw people open hundreds and get nothing.

I have never paid to open a crate, but all the ones I ever opened were junk

I made $70ish bucks back when the trading cards were introduced but then it seemed like the bottom totally fell off of that. I honestly couldn't begin to explain how those cards had any "value".

Hell yeah pal. Happy for your lucky drop.

Thank you brother, I really appreciate that :).

I normally wouldn't bother even sharing stuff like this because I don't want it to be seen as a brag of some sort but this kind of thing never happens to me and was genuinely curious to hear if this has happened to other people on here.

Ironically I hate loot boxes LOL.

Nothing wrong with sharing your excitement. It's bloody rare and you lucked out so hard. That's a bunch of quality games you can buy, I'd be excited too.

A friend of mine opened 2 crates randomly last night and got a $1000+ knife. Little bit jealous.

Still dumb to open crates though, the odds are awful. Made all my money in CSGO (and got my knife) by trading and speculating on the item market, opened like 2 crates in my 1000+ hours.

remember to pay your taxes on this, many people forget. congrats.

Thank you :).

Man CONGRATS! :O
I curse my luck always and iam jealous but iam also happy for you :)

Haha thank you Ashen, appreciate that.

I made about $100 off of PUBG items. I love not being very big on these cosmetics, it's literally like getting free lotto tickets for me lol.

Didn't even realise pubg had items you could sell, I guess I just tend to ignore that stuff, might have to go through my steam and see if I have any other rare things lol.

During the PUBG madness I opened a single crate and got some hot pants that I sold for $160

Bought quite a few games with that.

Very nice! What games did you buy with it? Do you remember?

That much money? Wow. I genuinely didn't know how lucky it was until I checked the prices and googled it, was in disbelief lol.

Yup, knife skin that honestly didn't look that special, think it may have even been the original CS design knife but still, looked kind of boring, couldn't believe how much I sold it for tbh.

Think I might give that "Hell let loose" a go but will wait for sales, as tempting as it is to buy now lol.

That's crazy! $1000?! Wow.
Yeah I definitely would not encourage opening crates, only reason I did is because one of the skins appealed to me (which rarely happens, as a matter of fact I normally don't even check the crates) and because I had the leftover money in my account I thought why not.

My first CSGO opening was also a knife OP, welcome to the club! Mine was a Bowie Stained and was worth something like $80.

A few lucky snipes in WoW auction got me 530 USD, couple of millions in game gold and enough Battlenet credit to pay for Destiny 2 a couple of years ago.
People will pay crazy money for mounts.

Out of print TCG mounts and pets, I would guess?

I wonder how much these go for nowadays. I bought several of those pets from the AH several years ago relatively cheap (few thousand gold each). I guess the person selling didn't really understand their value.

Yup, the TCG rooster mount and a bunch of pets, someone was dumping it for next to nothing.

I made a decent amount of cash trading in TF2 & Dota years back. Somewhere around 7k. Bought a lot of my retro gaming collection with hat money.

Crates definitely prey on people with gambling vulnerabilities though. It's not good stuff.

The first crate is usually good to get you hooked. The first crates I opened on Rocket League on PS4 and then on PC were Black Market Decals (the most rare ones)

Dang nice! Did you ever open another crate? I am grateful for what I won but that's it for me now, no more.
I used to open one every week after that, but best thing I got was a Primal Saber (pink). This went on for some months until I decided to cash out from betting / casino sites and case opening for good

It's like another world to me, I couldn't believe how fast someone spent that sort of money either, for me spending that much would be something I would have to weigh up for weeks LOL.

Fair enough, I think that was a great decision as well and takes great strength and willpower to do so because these things are designed to hook people in.

I got some leopard mask in PUBG that was going for like 1k. Sold it for 250 bc the market bottomed out on that item before steam's 7 day wait period was up.

I do actually. I ended up buying Dead by Daylight and all the DLC, NieR Automata, Prey, West of Loathing and then I bought friends gifts with the rest.

Ended up putting 1k hours into Dead by Daylight after it and dumped PUBG because of it so I think it was a pretty damn good crate lmao.

Dang, nice! Think I am definitely going to buy some friends gifts with mine as well!

i sold my rocket league solid gold, ugly alpha hat for like $200 in 2017.

I never even knew it was valuable until my cousin told me, as it was simply just a reward for playing the alpha version of the game back in 2014.

You got that right. Fortunately I managed to catch myself thinking about about putting real money in and said that I had enough of all that.

Anyway OP, you might want to wait some weeks to spend your wallet monies (if you decide to sell it), Lunar Sale is just two weeks away after all. (Also I do recommend buying Sleeping Dogs if you don't have it, I will just leave this recommendation here)
